What's different from DnD? The Cleric class for Tales of the Valiant

Personally I really wanted the Cleric to get some non-spell (circle) healing. Something that does not use a spell slot. Being a level 1-2 Cleric with 2-3 spell slots is painful - can’t do anything offensive other than Mace or Cantrip because you need to heal. Even the Paladin has Lay on Hands! So in past feedback I have suggested that they copy One D&D and let channel divinity act as free healing (and recharges on a short rest). Alt is to give a Cleric PB number of limited heals (range touch) per long rest. Like 1d4 heals to help bring an unconscious PC up. Hopefully they Kobald Press add this feature. I don’t think that it would make them over powered. Especially if they added it as a Manifestation option at lv 1.

Also, I just wanted to note that any cannot just re-print the PHB (as you started to correct yourself). The SRD5.1 is in the Creative Commons, so you can reprint those basic rules, with acknowledgement to WotC via the Creative Commons if you wanted to. Similar to how you could do that under the OGL (and still can, but CC is better in almost every way than the OGL).

I do like the change of archetype from starting at level 1 to level 3 means much harder to cherry pick. I also like that rituals are a separate category of spells.

kinda sad that war cleric still doesnt get second attack just like in 5e and is even weaker then in 5e with diffrent channel divinity

I mean man everyone does warcleric dirty, warlock gets second attack in 5e swords bard gets second attack in 5e, even damn wizards get second attack with a right subclass. I feel like someone like warcleric actully deserves more attacks.

Respectfully, characters in 5E are already over powered, which is why many campaigns die before 10th level where everything the DM throws at them just gets steam rolled. Adding more power to the characters doesn't fix the problem. It exacerbates it. I think Kobold Press is a great company but between WotC's behavior as a company, the VTT direction they have chosen to go in and Tales of the Valiant making the characters into unkillable super heroes, I'm just done with the 5E rule set. I'm sure it will be popular with players, but also a complete disaster for DMs to run.

Hard agree. PCs don't need any kind of boost. Encounter building does. Project Blackflag initially sounded so cool, but this is basically DND 5.1

@@CristianzenV I think part of the issue is that these companies are so laser focused on making the players happy that they aren't giving any consideration into what makes the DMs happy to run a session, let alone a campaign. If they want to depend on AI DMs a few years from now, maybe that works but if you want human DMs running the campaigns, they need to take into account encounter balance at all levels so the DMs can quickly and easily put together challenging adventures besides rival NPC parties.

The new Doom system gives DM's the ability to make similar encounters much harder. They are addressing this issue.

I would agree, but like I stated multiple times. They are introducing mechanics to make the monsters (and encounters) harder in return.

Is there a reason why they can’t just call it the spell level? Why not just use plain language? I don’t understand their reasoning here.

Callling it something else gives players a more interesting way to talk about their capabilities on character. Asking a Mage about the level of a spell feels kinda metagaming but asking about the ring or sphere of power makes it seem more integrated with the fiction. At least in my games we agreed that characters don't talk about spell levels.

The person above makes an incredibly good point. In the first episodes of Pokémon, they talk about levels of pokémon as if it was a video game. They quickly steered away from that because lvls are not a real thing in the world, they are to represent something.

I have seen many times that new players get confused between player lv and spell lv. I never had that myself but I can see why that would happen and appreciate the attempt at the change.
