35:10 they weren’t ashamed, they were trying to respect their mother. She was ashamed of herself and never left the house because of how people laughed at and treated her. Having to cut a hole in the side of the house and using a crane to get her body out would make her a spectacle for the town to see. Even in death, her kids didn’t want her to be humiliated like that and just burned the house down

They burned the house down because they didn’t want the last memory the town had of their mother was her body being lifted out the house by a crane.

Beyond not wanting their mother be a laughing stock, they also burned the house to break from the past and force all of them to move on.

They burned the house down out of respect and love for their mother. It was a _FAR_ more dignified burial than any of the other options they'd have. And the house was literally a house of horrors I'm sure they were happy to be rid of. They very likely owned the land and can build anew or sell it.

Like other here have mentioned they weren’t ashamed of their mother. They knew that she would not want the community to know how heavy she had become. By burning her up they are almost cremating her.

A lot of people don't catch what arnie is doing. He's describing that his dad hung himself in the basement. Took me time to catch it. That's why mom let herself go - she blamed herself for him taking his own life

Thanks for a great reaction to a really great character-driven film. Leo and Johnny both received critical acclaim for this and Juliet Lewis was also very good. This pretty much launched their careers. The only thing missing was Mich singing. Loved it! Let's see more of these. No magic or superpowers or explosions. Just a great script backed up by great acting.

Definitely not Leo's first acting gig. I forget his exact story, but he was one of these child actors that start very young, and their mothers take them around town to auditions to get them in stuff. At least that's how it used to be around that time, in the 80s and 90s. Most start by doing commercials, and then maybe get on a TV show. The first time I personally remember seeing Leo was when he became a character on "Growing Pains" which was a popular family sitcom from my childhood, when those types of shows were very big, and he came on later in the shows run, when things were starting to dry out, and they try and come up with something new to breathe some life back in the show. So, he had already been doing smaller stuff before that, but that was like a big step up that put him in the spotlight. Then this movie, and another movie from about the same time with Robert Deniro called "This Boys Life" really catapulted him further, and was the beginning of his film career. He's actually one of the few that make it out of being a child actor, into having a career as an adult, and obviously in his case, much more than just a career. There are a lot of horror stories about what became of a lot of child actors. Most of the time they're successful because their growth is stunted so they look young and cute longer, but eventually they'll change, and then be awkward looking or overly small as adults, and no one cares about them once they're not so cute anymore. They also have an abnormal childhood where they were expected to be an adult from such a young age, and they miss out on normal childhood experiences and are bombarded with responsibility and exposed to certain things before they had the maturity and psychological experience to deal with them, as well as in many cases there's some form of abuse that they experience. Not always. Some go on to have careers as adults, or do other things and have normal lives, but there are lots of cases of when the attention and work goes away, and they get involved with drugs, alcohol, and crime.

The reason why they burned down the house, it's cause they didn't want their mom to not be laughed at while being carried out through a hole in the house. From the whole town knowing who she was, there definitely would be a crowd to watch, that is what they didn't want for their mom.

I've always liked this movie, but I haven't seen it since I became a parent to a special-needs kid. Leo's performance in this reminds me so much of my daughter, although she is nonverbal and has mobility issues. But Leo really did nail it.

Add “Streets of Fire” 1984. to your list of movies to watch. This is an under rated rock & roll type of movie. A mercenary is hired to rescue his ex-girlfriend, a singer who has been kidnapped. With performance of hit songs from the 1980's. Including Rick Moranis, William Dafoe, Bill Paxton, Amy Madigan and others.
