Rather than the hat itself being a "comfort object" perhaps the act of wearing something on his head brings him comfort. He is depicted throughout the series as having steriotypical obsessive-compulsive traits (orderliness in his room to the point of labeling everything, etc.) So maybe when his head is uncovered it causes him discomfort, and we the audience misinterpret the other character's reactions to his hat being removed. Just a thought

I wonder if he got so badly injured in dodgeball, that he had to have surgery on his head. He may have gotten bad head damage from hitting it against the wall while playing and passed out. It wouldn't surprise me if he was taken to the hospital with how protective and perfectionist his parents are. Edd may have had to have surgery on his head for an unspecified reason (stapling the skull back together, injecting the brain, simple surgical cuts, tubes inserted, etc.) But surgeries such as this, especially in early childhood, come with both physical and emotional scars. Edd may wear his hat to hide the past from himself, or so people won't misjudge his intellectual level just from a past head wound. An extension on this is all the notes with instructions his parents leave in the house. Perhaps Edd DID have some minor brain damage, and forgot to carry out simple every day tasks. The notes were meant for when he was little to help him learn to be independent. But with his parents' anxiety on whether or not he will forget again is why they keep them up to this day.

Maybe he had hair before but the surgeries is what caused him to lose some hair (which could explain those lines of hair that is peeking out of the hat). It could be a huge scar with stables along with a hairstyle that doesn't match. He probably was put on medication that caused some of his hair falling out or not growing back because of the injury he suffered. Again, this is a theory with somewhat of a good speculation, not just some idea.

I actually had a thought about this, and here's how I came to the brain injury theory: When Double Dee came to the cul-de-sac, Ed (who's his age) is wearing a diaper. That likely means (especially since it's the 90s) he's less than 5. But he was unsupervised (they all were) meaning he's older than 2. I'd put him at about 4(ish) (maaaaybe 5 at a stretch) which means he can't have been in school yet. HOWEVER, the boys never saw the "incident" or else Eddy would have known not to joke (he's a jerk, but even he knew when to stop) So if the dodgeball incident happened, it would be in preschool (I never went and even so I'm from a different country so I'm not certain if gym class happens in preschool) From that I've come to this conclusion: Double Dee was injured in a preschool dodge ball incident. Because of this, he's had to have ongoing treatment. The cost of the treatment would explain why his parents were so absent (work), and the injury would explain his parents - Sticky notes are to help his memory. - His IQ is because of all the hard work they've put in to keep him from falling behind. - Routine, like sticky notes, help with any memory issues. - He's physically weak because they are careful that he doesn't do any sports (actually does anyone ever see him in gym class? I'm not certain) - They're obsessive because they're scared they'll lose him. So that's where my thoughts came from, in short, anyway.

And what if he has a never-healing wound that could get infected if left unprotected? It'd make sense, seeing how afraid he is about bacteria and filth in general. It could be covered by his hair so Sarah may have not noticed, or it may be too dark inside his hat for her to notice. It may also look cool to Ed, as much as it may look as it hurts (which makes more sense than just being a scar), and it would kind of shock Eddy too the first time he saw it. My theory is that there is absolutely no head outline under the hat. For instance, humans have a brain 4x bigger than expected for an animal of our size. Elephants are smart and have large brains, but their brain is in size with their bodies.

I think other than double d having a scar that he has like "emo" hair. Most guys I knew had medium length hair wearing beanies like that. I think that he has medium length hair and doesn't cut it shorter because then his scar would be exposed, however, lengthy hair is "a hassle" or "hard to keep up with" since double d is a very clean person. Long hair would be annoying to deal with and would cause him stress to style or take care of so instead he just hides it since he can't cut it.

And it could have his hair seeming like it is being pulled or tugged on resulting in him asking if it hurts. Not the best explanation, but it gives the theory a bit more logic. @@Wheezy_beezy This one is actually even easier and practically a non-issue thanks to the episode "Momma's Little Ed" showing Edd's devotion to his parents. Ed and Eddy forge sticky notes that Edd's parents use to list his chores around the house, and NONE of them are things Edd would ever even THINK OF, let alone do of his own free will... and he does them with little complaint. So the thought that his mother would have him do his hair every day would be an easy assumption for this theory.

The issue with debunking aspects of this theory is that the artists and creators of the show probably weren't constantly thinking about the logic of whatever is under Double D's hat. The show was never serial, it included lots of slapstick and fantasy phsyics (like when they built that elevator to the Moon out of old boxes and junk), and there could have been multiple discussions among the artists as to what was actually under there. They probably never decided enough to animate the continuous logic of what is under it. For example...when Sarah climbs out from under his hat, they weren't thinking about what she may have seen under it..only how funny the gag was. That's the main issue with theories of shows without continuity. The logic of their world is always different.

That is very plausible and as an artist myself I agree as I have experienced this, I have multiple original characters that I draw constantly and 1 of them was designed with a beanie on his head and I always draw him with a hat on, there’s no real reason aside from the fact that it is an integral part of his character and it is out of place thinking of him without his beanie. I’ve even put different hats on him but just never drew him with the top of his head exposed. I tried drawing him without the hat once and even after 2 hours of trying to draw the top of his head nothing seemed right until i eventually gave up and just drew the beanie back on his head

My theory is that when he he was little he he had gotten a head injury during a game of dodgeball and that it left scars and bald spots around the scared areas and that his parents had gotten him the hat to hide the scars and moved to Peach Creek so that he could have a fresh start where no one would know about his dodgeball accident, but overtime his hair grew long and since he couldn't go to the barber shop to get it cut due to the scars he want's to keep hidden and that his parents probably don't know how to cut hair or simply don't have the time to or maybe cutting it would irritate the scars he just pins it up all up and under his hat and used the hair pins to pin his hat to his hair to insure that it will stay put.

A fun kernel of info, answering the theory: If you're an Ed, Edd n Eddy nerd, you probably heard of the unproduced scene in the Big Picture Show. It was a campfire scene where we would actually know the backstory to Ed and Edd. Ed's backstory is fine and all, but we're gonna focus on Edd's backstory. According to the crew, Edd used to be in a school where they permanently injured Edd during a dodgeball session, thus leading to Edd actually constructing a machine that would function like the Ultra Machine from pre-videogame developer Nintendo, except with dodgeballs. However, seeing the disaster that his machine made, he was so internally scarred that he moved to Peach Creek. There we go, that officially answers the theory. As for why the campfire scene was cut, the team had already spent their budget in the scenes earlier, which is why the scene never made it to the final movie.

Hello, I am new here, and I didn't see too much of the video, but I have possible solution. It is clear that Edd (Double-D) has severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I am also someone who has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and one facet I share with Edd is Germaphobia. He is VERY cautious about germs, unless he is in nature and round bugs. I a the same exact way. I do not know if this will make sense, but: Nature exists as itself in its own pure state and holds no germs or viruses that are too dangerous as compared to a human-filled setting like a mall, school, office, etc. There are dangers to bugs biting you, or coming across poison ivy, but for the most part, nature stays clean and pure. I trust myself to lay down on the grass but would never lay on the floor of a public space; I'd also hesitate when laying on the floor in my room. That being said, he could be wearing his hat because of Germaphobia. I know that I will wear a hat if I have to lay on the floor or place my head on something commonly touched in public. Getting germs on my head/face is one of the most terrible possibilities since it is so close to where I breathe, and I also lay my head on the pillow and would not want to transfer the germs of the day on to it. By wearing his hat, Edd is protecting most of his head from the germs. A little bit of hair is left out, but that is to be expected, and when he showers he can get all of he germs off. A second theory relates to a mental illness that sometimes goes hand in hand with OCD: Trichotillomania. People who ave this disorder have an urge to pull the hair off of their body. Sometimes it is specified to just the head or the face. Edd could have this disorder as part of his OCD and could wear the hat to protect from that. A third theory is that he uses it as a comfort item (as you mentioned). Many people with OCD can experience sensory overload easily. Small ticks like tapping your foot or having a stress ball can help to calm you. His hat could be a mechanism of comfort he uses. The last theory also touches on what you mentioned. Many people with OCD are very routine-based. They have to do things in a specific order to avoid perilous anxiety. Wearing the hat could be part of his routine that must be done. Perhaps the hat was given to him when he was young and he felt as though he had to remain consistent. I think that the first theory I mentioned, and thought of, is the most accurate, but it could easily be a mix of multiple things listed above. It protects him from germs so he could view it as a comfort item, and it has to be part of his routine. Edd seems to be very routine based besides being germaphobic. I think I picked up on this because my OCD takes very similar forms. Everyone with OCD is different, but that is what I think. If you made it to the end of the essay, thanks for reading. I am a brand new viewer who happened to walk by my brother when he was watching this video, and, upon thinking about the question, thought of the above answers.

I have some aspects of OCD as well. So far, I haven't shown any signs of trichtillomania, but I do have germ phobias. I cannot stand to lie down on the floor or the ground, because I worry that the ground will contaminate my clothes with germs. While I don't constantly go around wearing a hat, like Double D, I do wear socks to bed, because I don't want to contaminate my sheets with the germs on my feet, especially if I'm in a place with a completely dirt-covered floor.
