Good Lesson here! Note that instead of B9, you can also play an A/B chord ( 7X7650 ) . On the Am7, you can play it using X05557 to help color the chord.

That part a minor . I bring my thumb on the B . And I play A triad . With my thumb still on the B , I move to a B triad . It's a movement I learned from playing Gospel music in church ... In my mind . The best bass players come out of Detroit gospel churches ... Who ever played bass for Michael Jackson is a prime example : Don't stop till you get enough .

You are adding the 7th note of the scale to the chord. For instance, Cmaj7=1-3-5-7 notes of the C major scale.
