This song was a double dose of thoughtfulness about the troubles of the time. There were still repercussions and resistance from the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, and we were also still heavily into the Vietnam war also, which drove people into the streets to protest the war. Definitely a lot of brothers were killed in the Vietnam war, as well as sisters too.

I'm looking forward to A&A's reaction to this song. It was released on May 21st, 1971, and Marvin Gaye's message was a cry to society, a heartfelt protest to raise the consciousness of all people about the civil unrest, the Vietnam War, and racism. His message is so relevant today. It makes me cry when I think of when his own Father shot him to death on the eve of his 40th birthday. I'm certain that if Marvin is looking down from Heaven at us, he'd be very disappointed. His music is a testimony to his convictions, and will forever be linked to that infamous era.

Well said Lisa! When I think of Marvin I think about what a pure soul he was. All of his musical peers loved him as well. I love watching the TAMI Show for many reasons, but I always think of Marvin and how gracious he was. At the end of Lesley Gore’s set, the first half of the the show’s acts came out and were all behind Lesley. Some artists were giving each other the side eye or even what appeared to be smirking before the camera cut out. But Marvin was back there dancing like crazy and singing along with Lesley, almost cheering her on. Such exuberance! That scene always stays with me. I was very impressed by him from then on. Seriously he was a pure soul. America’s “pride and joy”.

@@teknikel True, it's pretty much all mono. But Blue Note, Riverside, and Verve- those labels recorded really well despite the constraints of the time. It could be a cool once in a blue moon thing to try. In a dark room with some whiskey and some Eric Dolphy or Thelonious Monk... But yeah, definitely another era of recording technology.

This song just takes me back to a different era. Marvin will always be the king of soul. It is so sad that all of his beautiful music will be tainted because of the latter years of his life. I am so sorry that his father lost his life in what I can only imagine was a drug fueled rage. Please don't question me on this folks. I have lived it with my husband and son. I still live with all the horrible memories.

This song is timeless. Marvin was singing about people coming together in love to overcome hate, a lesson that folks haven't learned in the fifty years since. The ails he mentions in this song -- war, protest, police brutality - are STILL troubling society.

What I love about "What's Going On" is the layered production with the backwash of male friends greeting each other, and the background vocals and strings, and the percussion and bass, and the vocals, all bathed in this perfect reverb, and many times listening to this, I get chills up my spine because it seems as natural as breathing and loving and caring. Another song that's a must hear is "Mercy Mercy Me" from the same album.

There’s a documentary about the Beatles’ first U.S. visit where a documentary crew followed them around during that week, and one of the highlights for me is them calling the New York City radio stations making song requests, and they focus on John Lennon asking for Marvin Gaye’s “Pride And Joy”. Since seeing the documentary, that has become one of my absolute favorite Marvin Gaye songs.
