Master class in the value of restraint in singing. This guy clearly has the chops to just go over the top and stun people at any point. He never does. In fact, at some moments where others might take a star turn, he actually backs off. He knows he doesn't have to prove anything. A completely mature and accomplished performance...

Good comment. And the backing vocals are amongst the best ever, any song , period. I know A&A felt a little cheated that the song faded out so fast, but the producer new his craft: "That was just perfect. One for the ages. And we're done." Transcendent, as A observed 51 years later~~~

He is the pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle, which is not far from Elvis Presley's Graceland. By the way, the drummer on this song was the late Al Jackson, Jr., who also co-wrote "Let's Stay Together." He was such a master of his craft that he was known as the "Human Timekeeper." More Al Green, please, guys! He has a catalog filled with songs that are every bit as good as this one. My favorite is "Love and Happiness." It has such a tasty groove.

I've been with my husband now for 22 years. There are days I was so mad at him, I didn't even want to look at him, other days I couldn't STOP looking at him and feeling the love that we have built up over that time. It's so easy to just give up in a marriage, that's the easy way. The harder way is working to accept the other persons differences and remembering that is what drew you to them in the first place. None of us are perfect, I make mistakes and apologize when I am wrong. This man has stood by me through thick and thin, loved me through a terminal cancer diagnosis and is still beside me. I know he will be holding my hand as I pass from this world into the next and eternity is the place, I want to spend with him. I am so glad I grew up listening to music like this. Al Green, Barry White, Lou Rawls, The Isley Brothers, Gregory Abbott, Terrance Trent Darby... so many great soul songs that are heaven to your ears. Thanks for the memories on this one.

You guys nailed what it's like to be a couple that's been together through good times and tough times. You wake up one day in the midst of a life that doesn't really look anything at all like you thought it would 20 years earlier, and you look at your spouse and realize that their dreams didn't really come true either, but the two of you stuck it out even when it didn't make sense. Then you realize that the vows you took 20 years earlier about "'til death do us part" and "for better or worse"...those vows that you stuck by have become a gift that allowed a beautiful, committed love to flourish. A love that isn't dependent on circumstances or feelings. I can honestly say that if I could choose any woman on the planet to live my life with, I'd still choose the girl I've got. That's why I sometimes call her my "girlfriend for life". And that's true even if I'm mad or annoyed with her. She's the only girl for me.

This I my husband’s and my song. He can’t dance worth a dang, but when this song comes on, he tries. And it’s funny and sweet and you can just see the music move through him. Transcendent, indeed!

As a long time A&A fan this reaction was one I was most looking forward to. One of your best. Suggestion for a deep dive video: Marvin Gaye took a huge chance in his career when he stopped making Motown type hits and had to convince Berry Gordy to let him record and release "What's Going On?". I don't think enough people understand how much of a chance he was taking releasing a song that was so overtly political. Anyway, awesome stuff as always.

And now I'm dancing around in my kitchen to the song! 63 years old and I'm as in love with Al as I was when I was 12!

Dudes, yall just don't know. Back in the day this was one of many of "THE MAN" chiilin with with girl and some Al. I'm sure many babies came about with some Al. The CD "Best of Al Green" every song is the best.

Yes!!! One of my top-ten , maybe even top-five, favorites of all time. You know a lot of babies were made because of this lol. Pure in all aspects, vocals, lyrics and production, just sublime. Exactly what I needed on a gray day in Pittsburgh! You would also really like his quiet, emotional rendition of the Bee Gees How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, another soulful banger. Thanks so much for this men!!!

I’m so happy you’re sharing this here!! EVERYONE watching your channel needs to hear this, not just a small group. One of my favorites! Al Green was featured singing this song on a TV dramedy in the late 90’s. Look up Ally McBeal Al Green!

I saw Al live at the House Of Blues in Chicago in 2000 and my life was finally complete. It was ok to move on to the next life.
