What's going on with Scotland's ferries? | Caledonian MacBrayne's "ferry fiasco"

The state nationalised it and spent nothing on updating the decades old fleet They then rigged a contract and gave it to an incompetent shipbuilder despite being warned it would prove disastrous They have finally placed orders with Turkish and Romanian shipbuilder for 4 ships for which they have financial guarantees that they will be delivered on time , on budget and to specification.

It is a bit of a mess, isn't it? I've seen a lot of pressure for Calmac to move to buying catamarans instead as they seem better for modern sailings

@@SomeoneExploresthere’s a reason the majority of the ferries in the uk are monohull and not cat types. Safer and more reliable in bad weather

Most of the ferries are very old, and The Scottish government are carrying the blame! Now, with a company as large as Calmac, a new ferry ought to be ordered yearly. This has not happened recently, but neither did it happen prior to Devolution, with the ENGLISH Parliament, in Westminster, London! The 2 new ferries for Arran, and the other 2 from a foreign builder for the Islay routes, should help a lot! So much money was wasted during the pandemic, by Westminster paying non existent companies for urgent supplies for the NHS, which also has not helped! The entire island is toiling, and folk are finding it hard to feed, heat and pay their rents, relying on food banks! It's all a right state of affairs, and will likely take years to recover from! When the new ferries come into service, it will help a lot, and with a new ferry built yearly afterwards, by the Scottish government, we should see a great difference!

I noticed the public are to be asked to name the unfinished ferry at fergusons. My effort is..... "The Lost Ferry"

Good, well balanced video. Obviously you have pointed out the current issues, but also fairly point out Cal Mac good points.
