I was a mechanic in the seventies at a Chrysler dealer. This particular body issue was mostly wind noise at the doors. The window frames on the sedans and wagons. The hardtops were worse, with sealing the glass to weatherstrips. Water leaks and again wind noise. 1974 Was a major redesign on the weather strips and how they attached to the body. Unfortunately, the big cars were gone by 1979.

my mom drove one exactly like this one in Sunfire Yellow - I remember the wind noise you speak of - it was like a whistling sound - always thought it was the rear air deflector - we traded a 1970 Sport Suburban (we had 4 Sport Suburbans over the years from 1968 to 1975 - I bought one with dual air conditioning years later

These big wagons were so common in our youth. But they were usually run pretty hard by families and then scrapped because nobody wanted them when they were 8-15 years old. Fast forward 25 more years and now they're very rare and fondly remembered!

That is a car worth saving. It is unique. That color combination is quite different. Nothing screams 1972 like combining gold and green. It's a massive job for a massive car. Thanks for the update on it. Cheers!

I cracked up laughing at "Nothing screams 1972 like combining gold and green"! I'm positive the entire decade of the 1970s screamed Harvest Gold!! Yeah, there was a smorgasbord of other common colors available back then too, Harvest Gold was merely one of them, but they were seemingly obsessed with earth tones and I swear to this day that anything installed into the average kitchen had to be by, of, for or about Harvest Gold. Anyway, thanks for the reminder... and the laugh. Best wishes! - Max Giganteum

@MaxGiganteum Yes. Let's not forget the burnt orange, avocado, and coffee. The plaid bell bottom pants and leisure suits were quite the thing. As a child of that decade, I was subjected to Garanimals .

Scott, when Frankers is more interested in possible squirrels than smiling for the camera we realize that she's a true soul who has evolved past any desire for stardom! Once a queen there's no higher calling! I've owned several wagons, 2 Chevys, a Hillman, IH Travelall and a Dodge and found their utility to be unsurpassed! Towing, hauling, emergency shelter, camper, and people mover, they cover the bases. Looking forward to the resto! See you Saturday! Cheers!

I'm reminded of a joke from the 1970s. Two guys get home with their new woodgrain station wagon and the neighbor hears violent noises from the garage, followed by the statement "I think it looked better _in_ the crate." (I heard two versions, both of which attributed different nationalities to the dumb guys.)

Well, I see the wagon was originally sold at Auto Clearing right here in Saskatoon, that's pretty cool. A small useless fact, the original Auto Clearing building in downtown Saskatoon, where this car was sold, is still standing and is now the Courthouse since about 1982 or so.

So cool that I have a 'soft spot' for almost every car you highlight. Circa 1975 several of us High School buddies borrowed one guy's mom's Chrysler Town and Country woody wagon similar vintage, with the 440 cu in for an epic camping trip to upstate New York. Several months later, his sister smoked the motor, and I volunteered to fix the engine if they supplied the parts. We rented an engine hoist and pulled the very stinky, burnt engine out and put it upright in a car tire in their driveway. I pulled the head, and the cylinders and combustion chambers were horrifically thickly coked-up, and one piston top was gravel...there was no way this could have been rebuilt in that driveway. That engine sat in that tire in that driveway for years😣. Anyway, I am so glad your Newport drivetrain will get a new life under that wagon. That Newport makes all the correct vintage Chrysler music 🎶

Is that an SM parts car lurking behind the wagon? I grew up in 60s and 70s Mopar wagons, you triggered a bunch of flashbacks and suppressed muscle memory with this clip. Ours were always 3 row jobs because there were 6 kids. My brother and I always manned the tailgun, we got car sick so often my Dad wouldn't even stop, just slow down and get on the shoulder(Texas shoulders are a whole lane unto themselves), lower the window and one or both of us would hang out the back and hurl. Good times I know where there are a couple early 70s C-body wagons that didn't get derby-ed, if you need stuff that you can afford to ship from Virginia, let me know, I'll look around. They'll probably be free or dang near it

ABSOLUTELY THEEE MOST important part of easy restoration, ALL OF THE TRIM COMPLETE AND PRESENT! Especially when the restoration candidate is not one that reproduction parts are readily available. So many parts now are "unobtanium". Many many many junkyards crush reasonably decent bodies just to get the recycle $$$. I think every vehicle should go to a disassembly factory in order to save at least 10 assemblies for each vehicle. I know in the UK this is happening. I hope they bring this business talent to the USA.

It sounds like Scott will make her absolutely stock in appearance. I admit last night I envisioned the wagon in a GREAT set of 70's vintage U.S. or ET slot mags...we all know Dean is the king of scrubbing and polishing, I bet Dean and a 6-pack could make some old mags look stunning!

@paulbennell3313 5 ай бұрын
@@mysterj1 I could see that looking right. Or something like Cragar 5 spokes. For sure, Scott knows better than to put on some stupid 20" rims with elastic bands for tyres! And yes, Dean is the man for wheel refurbishment so that's no problem. But whichever way Scott plays it, new rims or stock steels with hubcaps (at least the full set are there), you just know that car will eventually become a serious looker!

And between being able to splice the 60 Dar and 60 Fury together, and now turning a sedan rear door into a hardtop rear door - 3 cheers to the manufacturers for different looking body parts sharing common components.

GREAT PROJECT!... but then again I am biased... I learned to drive in 1974 on my parents 1973, 9 passenger Plymouth Suburban wagon. Same color exterior (without the wood) same basic interior except ours was gold. It did not have that great grill on the 72 but still a great car. My Dad ordered the trailer towing package as well to pull our 1963, 16ft Glasspar Citation which it did a great job towing that boat and trailer!

What a beauty. I'm so glad you were able to get this car, and it made it to the hands of the dedicated craftsman it needs. My love for Fuselage Era C-Bodies began with the 1972 Fury. Years ago, a Gran Sedan (4 door HT) popped up at our swap meet and I rushed over to see the price. Seeing no sign in the window, I asked the lady what she wanted. "That's mine, not for sale" was the reply. She had a card table with a few books she was selling, and had just parked the car in her space. Every year I'd come back and circle by just to look at that Fury. What a rolling sculpture. More years passed, and eventually the day came when she showed up in a Chrysler Cirrus. Fearing the worst, I asked what happened to the Fury. It had developed a transmission leak, and the mechanic refused to continue repairing it because the subframe was terminally rusted. She had sold or given the car to her nephew to be a donor for his 1973 Charger basketcase. I got his number, called and went to look. He was doubtful the Charger would progress any further on his watch, because he had switched to building tractors as a hobby. I was really only interested in the Fury, but he insisted only on selling them as a pair. I reluctantly loaded the Charger, and ended up parting it out for enough to cover what both cars cost. I looked around my yard and found an old subframe leftover from the dealership days, before they moved to the next larger town in 1987. My car is not in much better shape than yours, but like you, I am determined to make it beautiful again. I can say 100% that having a lift will change your life. I used mine once to swap frames on a 1966 Impala station wagon. Unfortunately it spit a seal, so it's the next in line restoration project before the Fury can get in line

Nice update!! I can appreciate the awareness of the work involved in that fury wagon. I also appreciate that you fully commit to doing it "properly" by addressing ALL the rust with new metal vs. some quick butchery. It will actually be worth something when youre done and probably better than factory TBH. Having a donor car makes all the difference!!

I hope Santa was good to you and Frankers. I really like the Sport Suburban Wagon…although it’s an ambitious project and no doubt is certainly going to be labour intensive…it sure is a cool machine. The average Joe could not afford to pay someone to save that old girl…only someone with your skills could save it. It’s going to look amazing when you are done. That wagon is a real beauty. As you say - one gets taken in by the faded matching paint and the excellent body trim on the beast and easily overlooks the fact that the old tin worm has been munching on the old girl for a number of years. She's not quite a Greasy Flip, but she doesn't need leaving parked up until she is, so I can see your predicament! Dean: "Motor doesn't run, but you can fix that. Bit of rust here and there, but its not totally gone. Interior's pretty nice - I mean, the mice LOVE it...and so will you. Look, it has a dashboard and all the seats are there. All the knobs work and the sunvisors are great - I mean, if you had a couple of buddies to push it, you'd get the feel for how the old girl goes down the road." Scott: "Yeah, until you tried to stop it and found out the brake pedal goes to the floor..." Dean (without skipping a beat): "Well maybe, but you can fix that - in fact I'll throw in the parts from this Newport over here. In fact I'll throw the whole car in as part of the deal and you will have plenty of spares!" Scott (sounding very unenthused): "Great....what a a bargain... So I'll have TWO rust-buckets on my lawn instead of one..." Dean: "Hey - it means less lawn to mow and the Newport has a real good driveline, so just swap the bodies over-r-r-r........and you're there. It will be going down the road in no time" Scott: "Yeah - after another 150 hours or so of cleaning the frame and driveline, evicting the mice and putting the metal back where its missing on the bodywork" Dean: "Yeah - but your talking a hobby. Something to do in your spare time and it would be worth it, man. You'll see. " Let's hope it NEVER comes to that, eh? LOL! Nah - I bet you'll have it indoors in around a year.....probably around the end of next summer (your time) Oooooooooh. Just thought - what are you going to do for a winter beater next year if the Newport is parked up and in the process of becoming an EX-port? Does the Frazer have a heater?! Anyway, hope you had a laugh or two. Love the idea of seeing that Fury wagon project soon...ish....but also like the other ones you have on the go as well. Looking forward to seeing how you did on the rear door too - and how much of a faff it was from the point of view of conversion from one style to the other. All the best

Hello Scott, Happy new year to you, Frankers and the agents. Thanks for the update and sharing the outline plans. What sets your channel apart from some of the others is that you are working on what you personally want to work on and have the commitment to back it up. You are not just churning through low commitment get it running and get rid of it type content. There is a place for that and Mortske springs to mind, but yours is much more from the heart. Ok, take care, and as always, I look forward to whatever you care to put out. Cheers Scott, all the best from Mart in England.

Interesting - you mentioned that this is a six passenger wagon instead of nine. Yet, the tailgate has the swing-out option and a step pad on the bumper for rear passengers to enter ( and the grab handles on the D-pillar ). I remember a vehicle exactly like this when I lived in an apartment building, in downtown Denver, back around 1984 or '85. The wagon was owned by the old man that was the building superintendent. It was flawless and the old man kept it pristine. Eventually, he decided to sell - and sold it to a punk-ass kid that had it nearly destroyed only a month after he bought it. Since it was in the city - corners were tight - the kid tore up both side panels in no time....very sad !

I love the old Plymouth waggons my grandmother and grandfather had a 1972 Plymouth satellite station waggon when I was younger. If I remember correctly, had a 318 with a three on the tree, and it was an olive green.

My Great Aunt and Uncle bought a 1972 Plymouth Sport Fury hardtop brand new. It was always one of my favorites. It was fully loaded with power windows, locks, cruise, tilt, power seat. They only drove it on Sundays or special occasions after my Great Aunt died it was put in the barn with almost no miles on and sat there until about 10 years ago when it was pulled out. Unfortunately time had not been kind to the old girl, but I still have great memories of that Sport Fury. I can't wait to see this wagon revived!

my mother drove one exactly like this one - Sunfire Yellow/black vinyl interior (the sales brochure car) optioned almost the same - it had the Fury “Top Hat” option package which included a passenger side outside rear view mirror we traded a 70 Sport Suburban with a 383 which I liked better but my grandfather traded 4 cars every two years - these wagons were very popular here in Texas - many were equipped with dual air conditioning sure enjoy your videos (fell in love with your gold Newport (Royal ?) long ago - I bought one of these wagons several years ago and collected a few parts I’d be happy to send you - an NOS tailgate panel with woodgrain trim - it’s in my garage somewhere I’ll start looking for it

That flip up headlights long roof is really rare. Here's an idea ... Sink a large pipe in the ground and construct a large lazy susan on top of it with a slow rotating motor and bolt the long roof to it ! Just think of the twinkling light as it slowly rotates in the moonlight and/or sunlight ! Cheers Man ! 🍻👊😎🤙🍻

The Sport Suburban will be a fun project. I spent a lot of time in those old station wagons back in the 60’s and 70’s. They were great for dates! Thanks, Scott.

What a super cool project. It's so funny how not that many years ago, 4 doors, and wagons were considered wastes of time. Now, they're sought after jewels, and the prices that being demanded indicate so. I have a '72 Fury III that I scored almost 20 years ago, and more in love with it than ever.

I owned a Plymouth Suburban wagon, plain Jane white car, but solid. It was a 383 2-bbl, got to 70mph fast, then ran out of wind. Good car...

We had a 73 Chrysler wagon back in the day and way back a 57 Plymouth with a 301 wide block, cool cars. The 73 had a 440 and the passenger side doors were punched in but step dad bought some green doors and drove it and a 70 Cadillac till he couldn't drive anymore. I think he paid 75 bucks for it in the 80s because of the damage and it wouldn't start because the coil wire to the cap was shot. I measured it with my ohm meter and we stole a different cable and it fired right up. I almost bought it myself because the transmission on my Dart was shot but I ended up replacing it and rebuilding the replacement about 6 months later.

Thanks on the update on this one here. I've been watching it in the background wondering what the plan was. Sadly, I sold my 73 Fury Gran Coupe last year.....it's in Germany now. The hidden headlamps are so cool on these cars....the whole front end reminds me of a Shick Electric Razor!
