Thanks for showing all those varieties . I have E.cordigera -E.randii which I totally forgot on the edge of my patio. It survived purely on rainwater and sunshine ; what a tough plant. I’m encouraged now after watching some videos that I can get mine to thrive here in zone 8b ( Dallas) with regular feeding and watering.

Thank you for watching! You can never go wrong with Cattleya species-they’re almost always fragrant. Cattleya wallisii (species) and Cattleya De Loris Ziegfeld (hybrid) immediately come to mind. 💗

It's strange that diurna seems to have a variable fragrance. We have two individuals, and one is extremely fragrant and sweet while the other has a more muted floral fragrance.

I have one Encyclia in my orchid collection of 70 plants. I got it last year as a "bag baby" at Lowes. It's been growing well, but no flowers yet. I grow it indoors exclusively under lights. I put out one new growth after I got it and then a second. I just repotted it a few weeks ago and the roots are growing so fast and it has another new growth that is also growing fast...maybe this one will bloom. Compared you the size of your plants, mine looks to be large enough now to bloom.

I got the Epicyclia Serena O'Neill in February and it's been making a new shoot, but it's known to have leaf rip dye back. It has green color petals and a white/pink lip that smells like honey or chamomile. I found out that calcium can be used to prevent it so I have some oyster shells in the bark mix. Other than that, it's supposed to be similar in care to Cattleyas from what I've researched so far. 11:53 The foliage on this one reminds me of the Coconut Orchid.

Serena O'Neil should be a pretty easy grower, and I'd expect it's grow well being grown like most Cattleyas. The calcium in Oyster shells is not as available for absorption as what may be needed. We'd recommend an additional foliar spray of calcium nitrate if you're worried about calcium. Otherwise, a good Cal-Mag fertilizer should do the trick as well. The Encyclias with that grassy foliage are really enjoyable. One you should look into is Encyclia cyperfolia. Talk about some long, spindlely foliage!

We have an Encyclia osmantha and Encyclia seidelii both vigorous growers with very large inflorescences. Seidelii in bloom and osmantha in bud not no bloom yet. We live on tidal waters in southwest Florida.

That's excellent! We don't have those species, but from what we've read, seidelii is a cooler growing species, so if it's growing and blooming well for you, then you're doing something right! We don't know much about osmantha, but any species Encyclia is worth growing. Cheers!

Great video, I live in Sarasota and have been collecting encyclia species and some hybrids. Some interesting ones are E. x gracilis, E.diota, e.moebusii,e.howardii,e.moebusii v alba' Hamlyn's Albino Bambino', e.cyperfolia,e.oxypetela, e.xerophitca e.meliosma,e.inaguensis, just to name a few, there's a lot. If you're ever looking for something interesting or different let me know. I most likely will have it

Dang! You do have some rare ones! Encyclia howardii and xerophytica are really uncommon. Inaguensis isn't too common either! That's really kind of you. Maybe we could trade some stuff in the future.

Do your encyclias grow better on mounts or in pots or does it depend on type? I currently have 2, a small randi and another I just purchased yesterday so i dont know the name yet.

Yes, it depends. Sometimes, even different breeding of the same species can prefer one over the other. The only answer is to just try both and let experience tell you which method is better, but there are some that really do better potted even if most Encyclias seem to like being mounted. Encyclia dichroma is one that comes to mind. That one has always grown better potted for me.
