Great vid. Great content. 1. Wipes. 2. Electrical Tape. 3. Zip ties. The Zip ties have been a came change to keep things tighten up and secure. And all these things are very light. Thanks guys!

I pretty much carry the same stuff for my kill kit. I have two kill kits, depending on what I’m targeting. I like to have game bags big enough for bone in quarters, smaller bags for deer and the larger ones for elk. I carry one main knife for field processing, and one or two extras for misc, a sharpener, 2-3 sets of nitrile gloves, a piece of Tyvek (4’x5’) for ground tarp, and a couple garbage bags. I also have started carrying dyneema cord instead of para cord. I have somewhere between 50-75’ in my pack at any given time.

Good vid. Recommend adding small sharpening steel, or DMT diamond stone for touching up your knifes.

I know it’s a little late for comments in this video but do you carry a saw?? Maybe for ribs or anything like that??

I do not Carr a saw for breaking down animal. I can do everything I need to with a knife. I will sometimes pack in a saw after I have packed out some of the meat to cut the scull plate off if I am not going to do a euro mount. I have also packed in a saw for cutting firewood for the stove in late seasons.

Getting ready to head out on my first elk hunt. Been training and getting my kit all set and ready. This video brought a question to mind: Do you guys pack your quarters bone in or deboned? What are your reasons? Thanks! This channel the Elkshape channel have impacted me greatly. Thanks fellas!

I prefer bone in so that the meat doesn’t end up as one big ball at the bottom of your bag. It helps distribute the weight better IMO and I think it makes it easier to hang quarters.

I like to keep my quarters bone in if possible. It makes it easier to hang them and you loose less meat in the end. If you are planning on taking your meat to a butcher they will prefer that it is bone in as well. I will debone if I am far enough from the truck that it makes sense and if can get the meat out in less trips. Hope that helps.

Dont know if you recieved a response back or not to your question but here is my 2 cebts. I have harvested 30 elk 27 with a bow. I NEVER leave the bone in because it all comes out on my back. NOW, if I had access to horses or a crew to jelp, I would deffinetely leave the bone in. BUt, then again, it depends how many miles you are from your rig and how warm it is.... If it's warm you shouldn't shoot an elk if you're not sure if you can get it packed out without loosing any meat. Therre are A LOT of varibles with packing meat. I've never lost one piece of meat and I've killed elk when it was 100 degrees and no cooler at camp. Heres how you do that. When its hot out and the nights are cold like it is in Colorado at night during archery elk. You need a small pop up dome tent. Take a clesn tarp and put it in the tent. spread the meat out where its not touching. This is the first day and night (fresh meat wont spoil the first day). Early in the morning, pile the meat up and cover it with a sleeping bag. Keep it covered until evening and when it cools down, uncover it and spread it back out and do this until you can take care of it. we did this for 3 days when the temp was 100 during the day and never lost any meat If it gets down to the 40s at night you should be ok. There is a lot more to packing out meat, but I would suggest doing a search on the internet and get all the info you can before you hunt elk for the first time. When you have an elk on the ground and your miles from the rig and its pitch black. you better know what your doing.

I implore you guys, if you use that orange tape to mark things to help with blood trail, please PLEASE pick it up after you're done. Don't leave plastic in the woods! A good thing would be to use your onX app to mark spots with a pin. I like to carry a small pack of baby wipes. Also a small knife sharpener. Elk are tough and if you start to lose an edge, it's nice to get a quick sharpen. Great video Dan!

Onx is nice but at night onx will only get you so close. even with flagging tape. sometimes its hard to find your elk at night. I had that problem this year with the bull I shot. and it was in an easy place. I agree thoigh, pack it all out... Uually I go back in the next day and that's when I get my flagging tape and whatever I forget, since I pack and hunt solo.

I’ve added zip ties and/or electrical tape to my kill kit to help secure the tag to the animal!

I have been hunting elk for a long, long time, since I moved to Idaho in the early 80s. Back then it was just a recurve for me. I have never been a back pack kind of bow hunter and in 40 years have never needed one. Only one time did I ever have to spend a night in the mountains. ( the only flash light I carried went out on me and I had no choice. I just built a fire and spent the night where I was. Since that night I never have less than 4 lights in my pack). I hunt with just a fanny pack and I have everything I need. I live in north east Oregon now and live only 10 miles to where I park to hunt elk.. I need another fanny pack and am finding out that fanny packs are very hard to find now.. I harvest an elk almost every year wnen I dont pass them up. At 67 I have slowed down quite a bit. but still manage to pack all the elk out by myself. I ALWAYS have what I need to pack an elk out with me. Some of the products I use for elk hunting, I've invented. I'm sure some of you have done the same. If you're wise, you can have what you need with you in a fanny pack.
