WHAT'S IN THE BAG - Rick Shiels 16 year old edition
In this video PGA professional Rick Shiels head out to the golf course to play with the golf clubs he used in 2002 when he was just 16 years old.
With the help of Rick’s friends at Golfbidder www.golfbidder... Rick has built a replica bag of clubs he used to use from driver through to putter.
In 2019 Rick’s golf bag includes the Cobra Golf F9 driver, Cobra Golf F7 3 Wood, Callaway Golf UT iron, Wilson Golf Staff Model blades, Titleist Golf Vokey Wedges, Evnroll Golf Putter and Titleist Golf Pro V1 or TaylorMade Golf TP5 (as used by Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson).
How will Rick get on using golf clubs that are up-to 20 years older than his current clubs?
Scotty Cameron putter was Refurbished by / chrisfinchgolf

Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This KZbin channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.

First driver - in 1976. A 2nd hand Precision Golf Forge (PGF) Australia 1 1/2 Wood (made of wood!!). This club well and truly predated the existence of the likes of TaylorMade, Cobra and Callaway. What I recall as a 16yo learner golfer it was an absolute "bugger" to hit. I have fond memories my 3 wood which was simply a beautiful rosewood work of art, finished in a ruby red colour. Hit this slightly better than the 1 1/2 job but....... Fun video Rick!!

Also, I was rocking the Steelhead III woods set last year until I upgraded due to my shopping addiction. They hold their usefulness very well.

Loved the teacher/student interaction. Blades were the real deal back in the ‘70s. John Letters Master model with laminated headed woods! Moved on to Dunlop Australian blades red dots with persimmon heads (True Temper steel shafts). Black dot then gold dot Aussie blades (as used by Sandy Lyle to win the ‘85 Open. My first ever steel headed driver was a Northwestern ( shaft had a thin taper 6 inches above the hosel!!!). Taylor Made Woods next (Pittsburgh persimmon I think!). Ram Tour Grind irons were replaced by the Mizuno TP9 blades (Olazábal made them famous when he started out). Saw Seve with the TP9 long irons in his bag at the Wentworth PGA!! Loved those blades. Teamed them up with the Callaway GBB follows by a 7 degree Biggest Big Bertha. The head looked MASSIVE!!! Dozens of drivers and fairway woods since. Mizuno irons ever since but had Ping Eye 2 in steel and Beryllium copper (currently rapped up in a blanket and in great nic) as spare clubs when I needed something to spice up my game. Still prefer Mizuno blades but although I’ve used Mizuno drivers have dumped them and all Taylor Made drivers and love Ping drivers and fairways to this day! Putters back in the day were Titleist Bullseye centre shaft putter then on to a Ray Cook mallet (used by Nancy Lopez) but onto the greatest putter/design of all time a Ping Anser! Had several models. Used Odyssey 2 Ball, Number7 Tank but always go back to Anser style putter. Dunlop 65 1.62 to start with. Also Penfold Aces, Slazenger Plus before going 1.68 Titleist Professional balata. (didn’t last long. Favourite balls of all time were Maxfli Balata and the incredible mega spinning Tour Edition blue that chewed back SO much it was banned. Used by Greg Norman but it cost him several Majors with all that backspin (watch the old video footage Rich!!). Love the game and still have many of my original clubs up in the loft. Biggest game changer for me was the Callaway Great Big Bertha. It was massive in comparison to anything on the market when launched. I remember the first one I saw with Ruger Titanium stamped on the sole. I believe it was stupid money on launch as much as a set of irons. Check out the full retail if you can Rick as I seem to remember you needed a personal loan to buy one!!! Great videos as always. More of the old club testing with Golfbidders help PLEASE.

To be fair the lofts were different. The war bird was an 8 degree and I imagine the rogue was anywhere from 9 - 10.5 but yeah there's not going to be a load of difference between the drivers. You can get more distance purely off changing balls easier than changing drivers. You have to give the Rogue credit though that it's far more forgiving than the war bird.

I decided to hit mine the other day at the range - it has that scary loud hollow sound compared to newer driver. It is easy to hit for sure. The problem for me now as a better golfer is that when you see it next to a modern driver the face is so much more closed and thus over draws for me. My son loves it however for exactly that reason. I set up the weights with some modern knowledge to lower the spin and reduce the draw. I also have a really good tip stiff shaft in mine so it still feels very playable.

When I was 16, I used a Ben Hogan Wood Driver, Walter Hagen irons, which were older already. Still have them. A year later, I had MacGregor blades and persimmon woods - I wish I had kept those. Now I'm 55, and still use blades. Those cavity backs are like trying to use a tennis racket on the golf ball. Used Pinnacle and Top Flite balls back then, but occasionally would get a balata/wound ball. My shot shape was slice everything, including the putts.

Awesome.. It's funny because I've had the same set for about 20 years.. My Mom got me top clubs when I was about 13. VFT Hawkeye driver & 3wood. Same steelhead 5 as yours. Callaway X-14 steelhead irons with the old school ping stand bag.. Only set I've ever had. I use them all the time. Never really thought about how old they are.

So I am similar in age to Rick, (a little younger it would seem) and I remember these Scotty Cameron's and the Studio Design Series in particular. The finish on these Tei3s and the Studio Design had those old school lines that amazing finish with the unmistakable Yellow Dancing Cameron on the top. That's when I realized that golf clubs could be a work of art, some clubs are just beautiful.

So I have what I consider 3 first drivers, the first driver I was given by my father (a long with a set of old clubs with wooden heads and Spalding irons, which had a "Driver" in it, but some might call it a 1 Wood), then in the early 2000s I remember my father and I getting more into golf, he got me my first "real" club which was this Adam's driver (in my mind if it wasnt from one of the larger brands at the time I thought of the club as somehow unplayable by a "real" golfer, not realizing a "real" golfer, especially a pretty good one can take what you give him and do well enough), and he got fit for a beautiful set of Mizuno irons that he uses to this day, they are gorgeous and still feel great. I also got like the most adult version of the junior set of irons the little shop had. But it was an old Adams Tight Lies Driver with the funkiest headshape you have ever seen on a club head, and I was also allowed an Odyssey putter I adored for years (I wanted a Studio Design Scotty Cameron so bad, those putters were mesmerizing they were so beautiful to me and a close friend had one, and I used to just love to look at it, I became a Cameron Crazy that day I just didn't know it yet, plus didn't have any money, and my father was not about to spend as much on a putter as essentially what he paid for the rest of my set), but I was very content and appreciative of my new set. I finally felt like a true golfer that could actually play with my friends who were good, and not feel embarrassed about my "equipment" even though they never said anything about what I had before, and paid about as much attention to my new equipment, in my mind I felt so much more at home, like I belonged on a golf course. It was all my own little self doubt telling me that I needed a "true golfers" set of clubs, so I guess the Adam's Driver and Odyssey Putter were the first clubs that made me feel like a "real" golfer. All my golf friends were very impressive strong young golfers. The did a lot of playing the Junior Masters (a big junior tournament that was basically invite only) and eventually picked up golf scholarships to smaller golf schools. So playing with them was already intimidating, but pulling out a wooden headed club made me feel less than some how? Not any more! I used to see all their amazing clubs, they all used Ping Drivers which stood out so much at the time, and ping I3 irons and of course they all had just the most beautiful Scotty Cameron Studio Design putters, and used to think, that's what a true golfer looks like and the equipment they play with, only the best! So I would just spend most of my time begging them to let me look at the SD Scotty Cameron putters they had. The lines and color of those pieces of equipment were breathtaking. Each putter seemed to have it's own personality even if it was an identifical clubhead shape and finish, that combined with those old school lines, man so good. I knew just as well then, as a young stupid kid, that these Scotty Cameron putters were something special. I never forgot my friends' Scotty Cameron putters, and when I really got "serious" into golf a few years back and worked my way to a single digit handicap, I always knew my first big purchased would be, a gorgeous Scotty Cameron putter. I finally bought the first one, and the Cameron Crazy in me came out and I began to collect, and all it took was a few glimpses of a truly gorgeous putter to instill that in me. I didn't get "serious" in golf for almost another 14-15 years after seeing my friend's putter, but the impact the putter made on me was still there, and it was the first thing I looked at and eventually purchased for my first truly custom golf clubs. But the first time I bought a Driver for myself. (I didn't have much say on the first two, I wasnt a fan of the Adam's driver, but the salesman who owned the store and did certified fittings was good and he told my father, it's not pretty, but your kid will play better and learn more if he starts here with this type club that will forgive him a little (read as a LOT, and he was right), and the more interest he takes and when he finishes growing, he can be fit into a morr proper set like we did for you (my dad) if hes still serious. So my first two drivers were decided for me. But, I bought my next one, and it was an old KING COBRA (this is back in the Day before Cobra had dropped the King bit of its name) driver with a Speeder Shaft (I had no idea at the time about the differences in what was made OEM for these company's product and what the "true" aftermarket product performed like) but I was smitten with it. I didnt get fit for it (didnt listen to my father's advice) and I ended up purchasing a King Cobra SS (the number 427 is coming to mind for some reason), I cant remember exactly which year this was, I want to say around 2003-2004, but I it could be a year or two later, but I loved that thing. So after that long story no one will read, I count the King Cobra SS as my first driver, and I loved it so. It won me a couple long drive side games (when they have long drive holes in tournaments) back in the day, playing mostly scramble style foursomes when we played a lot then, and just cranking one deep on the long drive hole was what I came to do and loved. So I really enjoyed that driver a lot. Have had a few over the years now. It's still one of my favorites because of the memories, but I played my best golf and was winning little 2 man money tournaments when I got fit for a Ping G15 back in the day, and man I just felt like I couldn't miss with that thing. Even bad shots would be salvageable. Good times. Fun events. Good memories. This video brought all those memories rushing back. Fun video guys and I enjoyed both of y'all's demeanor. Good stuff.

So I still have my Callaway GBB and I pulled it out the other day and just absolutely MASHED some balls. The thing I noticed, and remembered from when it was my everyday club, is just how straight it goes. Steel shaft, 9°... baby draw every single time. The only problem is that I got out my Cobra 11° right after and mashed the next few probably 20-30yds further. This time, little fades every time. I just like the way the GBB looks in the air. So pleasing to the eye. Great video as always. 👊

I believe these were the clubs I was using in 2002(20 years old at the time) Driver- Callaway C4/Hawkeye(Can't remember if I got the C4 in 02 or 03 but it was one of those 2) 3w - Callaway Steelhead 5W- Callaway Steelhead Irons 3-PW Taylor Made LCG SW and LW - Pure Spin "Diamond coated wedge". (They were a gimmick club I ordered off TV, extremely gullible at age 20.lol) Putter-Odyssey White Hot Interesting tidbit about my irons. I bought them at Golfsmith circa 99 or 00 and when I went to buy them Bruce Fleisher was actually there signing autographs earlier and promoting some new club. For those that don't know at this time he was probably the best player on the Senior Tour. Anyway when I was testing them he actually watched me and was talking to me along with the salesmen. The fact that I hit them so good infront of him was why I bought them.

This brings back memories. Basically, Rick had all the clubs that I wanted but couldn't afford lol. I had Howsen Derby 2 clubs (women's version as they were shorter) and a Hippo driver. I remember telling the pro in the club shop that I was interested in buying the big bertha driver, testing it on the range, and then telling him it was too big. Back then he obviously believed me.
