Great reaction y'all. A steller cast, epic writing, tight editing, eerie soundtrack and masterfully directed. What makes this movie so shocking and even terrifying isn't what you actually see on screen but more of what you don't see. Which is why I personally think this is another great film from modern suspense master David Fincher.

This is a very dark film, but it's iconic. That ending is insane!
@USCFlash7 ай бұрын
Mills would easily get off, by simply pleading temporary insanity. No prosecutor would charge a cop under these extreme circumstances. No jury would convict a cop under those extreme circumstances. He'd probably just be given a plea deal to go to a state mental hospital for a month and that's it.
@stevesheroan41317 ай бұрын
I’ve held this same belief since my first viewing, and I don’t think there’s any other outcome that makes sense. So what if that is what John Doe wants, if I were in Mills’ position I would gladly oblige him. I would have reloaded until I ran out of ammo or until they tackled me. If I were the judge I would slam the gavel on a temporary insanity verdict so hard that it would break the gavel. Housing and feeding that nutcase in a prison is a horrible waste of money IMO.
@USCFlash7 ай бұрын
@@stevesheroan4131 Well like I said, I don't think it ever even goes before a judge. No prosecutor would risk the public outcry of trying to jail a cop for life, for killing John Doe under those extremes circumstance. The prosecutor, the police department and police union, etc would kill this before it even went to trial. Plea deal, to keep it from being a media circus. The prosecutor would have to think about their future career. They are not ending it for trying to jail a cop for killing a serial killer, under the most extreme circumstances possible.

Fun little factoid about that ending scene.. The initial cut actually had some shots with Gwyneths head in the box - but Fincher couldnt push it through without the Rating having to be harsher.. and the production company wasnt having it - so they scrapped those scenes. The head survived though.. and would later make it's cinematic debut in the movie "Contagion" where Paltrow starred opposite Matt Damon.
@jp38135 ай бұрын
Is that a spoiler for Contagion then?
@Nogli3 ай бұрын
@@jp3813 Not really. It's actually promoted that she dies. The plot is that she is patient zero of the titular virus. The head is used in an autopsy scene. But that fact about the head was everywhere when Contagion came out, thus ruining the ending of Se7en for anyone who doesn't know it.

There were three alternate endings that were scripted and some were even storyboarded but none actually ever filmed... Alternate ending 1 - was where Somerset actually shot the John Doe instead of Mills right before Mills was going to. The last lines could have been...Mills: What the f*** are you doing? Somerset: I'm retiring. You're going to be alright kid. It's alright. (This ending was changed because according to Brad Pitt, there was no way that Mills was going to let Somerset shoot John Doe. Even Morgan Freeman didn't particularly care for this ending and felt that it wouldn't fully work. Director David Fincher agreed). Side note: Also the producers wanted to show the audience what was actually in the box (and a fake head of Gwyneth Paltrow was even made by the special effects company but never actually used in this movie...the fake head was actually used in the movie 'Contagion' several years later. Alternate ending 2 - Tracy actually was alive but it was the head of one of the dogs that was in the box. Somerset convinces Mills to holster his weapon. Mills & Somerset take the John Doe back to jail to stand trial for his murders. The last lines could have been...Mills: You thought you could manipulate me into playing your sick twisted game, you sick f***. John Doe: [looking at Somerset] You're right. He is smarter than he looks. [Mills & Somerset take him back to their police car and he evilly smiles] (The producers wanted this ending for the film, but Pitt, Freeman, Kevin Spacey & director Fincher all rejected this one) Alternate ending 3 - (this ending was in a very early draft of the script but was later changed. No storyboards were made because the ending was changed so early on)...in this ending, Mills shoots Somerset in the arm so he can then shoot the John Doe. Later the audience would see Somerset in the hospital getting treated for the gunshot wound, when the captain showed up to hand Somerset a note left for him. The note would read "you were right. You were right about me. You were right about everything. Sorry...M" [M for Mills]. In an interview after the film was released Brad Pitt mentioned he agreed to appear in 'Se7en' under the condition that Tracy’s head was never shown and that Mills shot John Doe instead of Somerset or doing 'the right thing' because he felt that the Mills character would be passionately in love with his wife and with the revelation that John Doe murdered her and their future child, his whole world was shattered. And out of that passion, all he could think about was Tracy and how John Doe took her away from him. He had to shoot John Doe in that moment. Director David Fincher also defended the decision not to show Tracy’s head in the box and to go with Millis shooting John Doe out of passion & retribution, when producers wanted to change the ending to be more upbeat & optimistic. Fincher said in another interview "the producers wanted to change the ending narrative, which would have totally changed the film's tone. The whole film was bleak because the crimes themselves were so bleak. From the onset this was setting up that this story wasn't going to end pleasantly, then to suddenly have a happier ending would have been a great disservice to the story as a whole and even would disrespect the intelligence of the audience. No, I wasn't going to do that". Ultimately, the final theatrical ending of Se7en had all the elements that Fincher, Pitt, Freeman & Spacey fought to keep in and had the desired effect of surprising the audience and keeping them on the edge of their seats. Se7en didn’t need to show the head in the box to make an impact, and the above alternate endings wouldn’t have had the same emotional effects that the final movie actually did....

I make this comment every year or so. I was here at the beginning when I watched the first episode of GOT when it aired. Watching your sister run out of the room every 5 minutes at the most innocent of scenes because she was terrified something bad was going to happen. Or your mom hiding her face at every sight of blood. Yet here we are, watching Seven. I never would have guessed that would be possible.

If you haven't seen it already, go to 23:08 in the edit. There is a 1-2 frame subliminal shot of Gwyneth Paltrow that most people miss, and it represents Mills' seeing his wife in his head as he agonizes over what has happened to her and it leads him to shoot John Doe. Fincher has done this before, as have other films and commercials.

You slice off all yer finger tips in an a attempt to hide your identity in 1995? DNA wasn’t just a passing fancy….it was the shit.
