These are the same bags that the Marine Recon units use. They even have them custom tailered to their needs. They prefer them over all the other standard issue gear because they are hard to break and do well when jumping into an area. Nice video and look forward to the future videos.

I like one guys mention of a small medi-kit added to your canteen kit, also, I would add some cordage. 50-100' of paracord or bank line. Cordage is very useful and very hard to replace with natural materials. Great vid though, some good ideas I've never thought of.

That is a good basic kit. I actually keep a "Get Home Kit" in any vehicle I own, and redundancy is the key for my kits, and I try not to over do it with unnecessary items, just the basics to keep it more comfortable. Thanks for the video, look forward to seeing the rest of your kit.

Good stuff. I'll add a video I did about my BOB I did while living in the city. I to am basically bugged out at our house. We are never really more than about 15 miles from the house. I haven't given it much thought since we've been up here. Now I will have to through soe stuff together for the vehicles. I was getting ready to put the winter stuff in soon anyways.

I too have a whole plethora of fire-starting methods in my bag, but my favorite is my bic lighter that's always in my pocket! Quick and easy. And if it gets wet or lost I have lots of backup, but nothing beats the ease of a pocket lighter. Love your videos - that Kevlar thread is a great idea!

A get home bag is a good idea. I spend a lot of time on the road and I have a small bag that goes with me everywhere, the roads may be blocked and you may have to leave your car and go on foot being wet and warm is far better than being wet and cold. I have many ways of starting a fire with me at all times. It's one of God's greatest gifts to man and we are the only animal to have it and use it! "Don't be the victim"

From a backpackers perspective, you need to make sure you exercise your kit. Take your 72 hour kit into the woods on a backpacking trip. Get a true feel for how long you can take walking under the strain of your gear selection in a three day period. Then start customizing your kit based on weight, and frequency of use. If you go out on 5-10 backpacking trips, and you never use a specific item, you have to ask your self, is it that important, or is it dead weight? MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR KIT TO THE TEST! And add a food bag of at least 3 meals per day and snacks for three or four days (think 6000-7000 calories per day). Your going to be burning some serious calories on that three day walk, and it’s better to have to much than to little.

Just one suggestion I would make. Try out one of those hand crank magneto flashlights or the similar ones you shake to charge them. Batteries can die or leak and well especially in the winter it is much easier to shake a flashlight a few times or use the hand crank then fumbling around in the dark and cold to switch out batteries. Just a suggestion.
@certs743

How is that any different then "hang on Mr Marauder while I fumble around and swap out my AAs.
@certs743

in the situation discussed that would not really do you any good. Besides tactical lights are not as useful as one might think.
@certs743
@certs743 10 жыл бұрын
So tell me how exactly does having your flashlight on your pistol make changing batteries in the dark and the cold any easier? If anything that requires more manual dexterity which is first to go. Unless your training was in arctic warfare I don't see how that would be relevant and I am still stumped as to why you think that would be of any use. I was simply commenting that in places like where Cody and I live having a flashlight that does not require swapping out batteries seems more practical.

Nice video. Military now uses the MOLLE system which you will identify by the digital camouflage. As you demonstrate, clean, serviceable ALICE equipment is suitable and sometimes preferred due to the use of steel and aluminum versus plastic. I think the ALICE pack is lighter, but carries less. The MOLLE pack is more comfortable. Hope this helps.

That is a large A.L.I.C.E. pack the US Army used for decades, it has since been replaced by something newer, lighter, and stronger. But it is a great B.O.B. pack though, it is what I use right now! But when they get packed heavy they lack a bit in the comfort area.

Bic lighters are good. Fire is 2 to 4 on the survival priority list (depending upon who you talk to), having at least two ways is recommended. I'd go with 3 myself. Bic lighter, the matches and fire steel. My list in order: Defense, first aid, shelter, fire, water, food. A military canteen set (pouch, canteen, nesting cup and nesting stove) are a no-brainer in my mind. I'd also carry an Esbit stove and fuel that will fit inside the stove. Water tablets and boiling is 2 ways for water. Carry on!

When I saw the "GEL" packets @ 12:30 and you said they were for when you were running out of steam, I thought "welcome to MY world!" The sad truth is that the older you get the more stuff like those Gel packets you need to keep on truckin'. I usually pack 4 or 5 Gator Aid or Power Aid's when I'm riding my atv or hunting. It sucks when you cramp up like a spring at it's breaking point and there's nothing to relieve strain! But Power/Gator Aid does the trick in about 2 to 3 minutes. FYI.

That's a great video, but I wonder if it wouldn't be wise to include one of those mylar emergency blankets (take up about as much as a pack of cards plua a small 99 cent emergency poncho (about the same size) in that little kit. Though I'm sure he's got more suitable gear in the ALICE pack, those small additions might help a great deal if anyone had to take just the smaller kit and spend a cool, wet night in the woods with it.

Old school ALICE pack... same thing I have! (bought at local mil-surp shop that had a whole giant box of them to pick through)... it's not the standard issue pack anymore. But it had a lot of utility and it was the cheapest external frame pack I could get my hands on.

Awesome! Reading online forums about products is good but you don't really know if it works till you try it.

Cody, I think you should add just some basic first aid to your small kit. nothing crazy maybe just some sterile gauze and athletic tape. small compact hardly any additional weight and if you had to hoof it with jet the small kit you could at least dress a decent wound.

Good idea. I always keep an extra pair of glasses in my truck but hadn't considered them in my bag. With the cost of extra glasses as low as $20-$40 (buy spares off the internet--sounds crazy but mine have worked out great and I have a tough scrip), there is no reason not to have extra pairs.

Cody, I'd recommend a small first aid kit for your maxpedition bag, probably externally mounted. Commercially produced small first aid kits can be problematic as they are either very good or lame so it takes some research to figure out what you think you should have. What are the likely injuries? Worst case injuries? Some things like splints or tourniquests can be improvised. Heavy bleeding requires dressings or blood clot material. For size savings, even just a military issue compress would be better than nothing.

GREAT vid! This is kind of embarassing to admit, but what would be really awesome would be a video on firestarting techniques. I wasn't a boy scout, I'm not a military man either, so I'm kind of deficient in those skills. How do you actually use a fire steel? How do you use that pitch-wood and make it last? A vid on the top six ways to make fire or something like that woudl be really awesome.

I'm going through and watching some old goodies, and I would maybe add to your Canteen pack some form of salt. Either plain salt, or I like Boulion. I was ice fishing this last winter and I went back to my truck after the day and it wouldn't start, I was the last one to leave the lake ( I wasn't catching anything, and it became a pride issue). I spent a very cold night in truck, but I had a pocket rocket stove and 3 Boulion cubes with me. I tried to start my car every hour or so for 15 minutes, I was totally fine and my wife arrived around 6 jn the morning to help me out. Also I was Ill prepared and only had a few gallons of gas left... Thanks for all the great videos Cody. I consider you a friend and I love seeing what you and your beautiful family are up to.

Small kit is far more appropriate than 99% of the BOB's on KZbin. People think they're going on a vacation or something. My only observation is, unless I missed it, your small bag doesn't have much first aid??? Even a few bandages, antiseptic wipes, super glue and a small tube of anti-biotic should be a priority. The needle and wax thread can close up a big wound if necessary but those small ones (blisters and cuts) can greatly hinder progress if not treated properly. Good job though.

The only true way to determine what you as an individual is going to need to survive for 72 hours is to put together a minimal bag, actually go out somewhere and try to survive for a weekend. Write down what you need to survive then do the research and buy quality items. Some things to think about. Are you by yourself or do you have a family you need to take care of. Do you have enough equipment for them. Have a plan. Where are you going to bug out to, how are you going to get there, are you and your family physically fit enough to make the trip. If you're not forced out of your home why leave. Stay near shelters and points of distribution. Going out on your own especially if you have a family is a bad idea.

So my question Cody, those gel package things you have in your kit. Would those be basically oral glucose that emergency personal give in hypoglycemic cases? I guess I'm used to using that because I'm a paramedic, and didn't know they made it for everyday use. Im actually looking at them now because my son is hypoglycemic.
