I need to compare with my DNA matches not just with my own ethnicities.

I just started looking into the longest segment a few days ago because on my mother's paternal side....her number one DNA match shows up as a possible 2nd cousin. But all of my mother's 1st and 2nd cousins on her maternal side have a much lower Longest Segment than this person on her paternal side. Is it because a half sibling or cousin is in the lineage > If you could read these results and let me know how my mother is related to this person (approx) that would be a huge help. Shared DNA: 205 cM across 6 segments Unweighted shared DNA: 205 cM Longest segment: 114 cM

If you look at DNA painter 205 cM can mean several relationships including Half GG-Aunt / Uncle, 2C, Half 1C1R, 1C2R or Half GG-Niece / Nephew. My second question when looking at a new match is how old are they in comparison to your mother. When looking at segments you need to look at not only the length but the number of segments. If you have a few longer segments that can mean a closer relationship than many small segments. I think the more important question is how old are they in comparison to your mom from there you can decide which of the above relationships might make sense. Hope this helps

This definitely isn't available to me yet. Those buttons just don't exist in my account. Annoying, because I would be very appreciative of a chromosome browser in Ancestry, and have been strongly suggesting it for yeas now. I hope it becomes available to everyone soon.

Is that something unexpected?

@@familyhistoryhound those are from 2 very distant ancestors, all my recent direct ancestors are Dutch and English, would have assumed they would be the strongest.

How do I get the chromosome browser?
@familyhistoryhound Жыл бұрын
Ancestry does not have a chromosome browser. What they have is a chromosome painter. You can find it by going to your DNA Summary tab where you will find your ethnicity results and if you scroll further down the page you'll see ethnicity inheritance. Click view breakdown and and the top of the page you'll see ethnicities and Chromosome Painter (Beta). Hope this helps.

@@familyhistoryhound I spent an hour on the phone with Ancestry yesterday... apparently the chromosome painter is a BETA tool available only to select users who were chosen at random as "testers". I was told it would perhaps be rolled out in a future update, if it proves to be a useful tool.

@@2horns8myhalo That is news to me I understood that it had rolled out to everyone.

The chromosome painter is very accurate, it's the same as 23andme the Indigenous shows in the exact same places on chromosome 4 and 19, but the inheritance tool is very inaccurate.

It's always encouraging when you see them agree like that. I believe the ethnicity part of DNA is getting better and better.
