Except it is way more then $10 more, that amount of extra plastic alone adds up. The Igloo was on sale and probably cost 60-80 normally and had thin plastic all around compared to the thickness in the Yeti. I understand the price difference is large, but anyone that does long-term outdoors events and camping appreciate a cooler that can keep ice for upwards of a week. There are other brands that are cheaper but also overbuilt like the Yeti. Some also use it to keep elk or boar meat fresh on the trip home.

I’ve done that, and it makes all the difference in the world. It’s all about the top being insulated. In my cheaper, Coleman coolers I’m actually thrown a layer of plastic and a small poly blanket over the top and that makes all the difference in the world too. So buying a cheaper cooler and doing expandable foam into the hollow top will turn it. Almost into a yeti. Not quite but good enough.

It always depends on what you are using a cooler for. With me, I got a cooler because we have had power outages that have lasted 10 days and an expensive cooler is already paid for the first time you don't have to throw out all of the food in the fridge. I also wanted it for long car trips. I have driven cross country 5 times and being able to really trust that the food will still be good at the end of a week is important. Also for longer camping trips. That versus people who just bought a cooler for drives to the beach. When I was younger, I always bought the cheap ones. But I have ended up buying multiple cheap ones and losing multiple refrigerator loads of food and at my age, I look back and would say to myself, "Get a good cooler the first time" It doesn't have to be a Yeti, but one that will hold ice for 10 days.

@rvninnorthcarolina3377 6 жыл бұрын
Never personally owned a Yeti cooler. I have friends who have them and they swear they can go a week without loosing ice. Of course...IT ALL DEPENDS on how often you access the cooler though. If you have beer in the cooler the ice wont last because it will be opened constantly until the beer is gone...then you have to add beer, etc. If you put vitamin water in it, it will never be opened and it will last much longer...regardless of the cooler brand ------

The obvious test is to determine how long each will keep the inside to 40 deg F. Then, you decide which is more economical for your use. I suggest the most cost efficient solution is have a smaller cooler inside a larger cooler. Insert additional foam insulation between the two. Now, you have more than double the insulation which will keep your inside temperature to 40 deg F much much longer.

Yeti is for people who want others to know they have money to burn. It has more plastic. Plastic is incredibly cheap. The price is an insult.....but if they can fool people into paying it, well, there's one born every minute. I have been using a Rubbermaid cooler for my lunches at work for 25 years. I can put warm cans of water in it with an ice pack and about 45 minutes later it's like it came out of the fridge. It will keep ice for a couple days, sometimes 3 days. I paid $14 for it 25 years ago. If there are more people who will pay that kind of money for cheap plastic and insulation.....I am in the wrong business. The profit margin is astounding!I also have a couple large Igloo coolers for fishing trips. They are very large coolers, and I paid maybe $35 for each of them. They will keep fish packed in ice for a couple days. Don't need to pay "too much" to get what I need. People have to realize a lot of brands are this way......not really different for the amount of price they have.

I can drop it off the back of my truck fully loaded and it won’t crack or open. This is cooler to keep. Those $50 you will most likely replace every year due to them breaking where as the yeti will last much longer. Mine are going on 5 years now. Igloo is made in USA. 🇺🇸 I can leave my igloo cooler at the campsite without worrying someone will steal it. Drinks and ice in the yeti turn it into a two person chore just to lift it. Empty, the 65qt yeti weighs as much as a case of bottled water. The igloo is super light. The other couple camping with us still had to buy ice for their yeti, but we did have to re-ice once more than them. No big deal. The igloo lid is hollow. Drill holes in the outside of the lid and fill it with expanding insulation. Yeti is about image.

I have never bought one Yeti for the name. I have them because of how well they work. That being said, I do not have their cooler because it isn't the best. The Maluna is, and there is a spot that you can get one of the blemished ones for about half off. Also, there are camp sites that will not let you bring your cooler in unless it is bear proof.

@@Jawsjawsjawsrg The handful of ppl needing to meet bear-proof campsite requirements isn’t what’s keeping Yeti in business. Nor is it the even smaller number of ppl who need 4 days of ice because of how far off the grid they’re going. Ice isn’t some rare, expensive commodity.

I’m a contractor in Florida and my yeti keeps the same ice for 3-4 days of drinks for me and my guys in 100 degree weather. Never had any other cooler make it past lunch on those sweltering days unless I did a 3/1 ice to drink ratio which just made us refill it more and melt the ice faster. Plus with the yeti ice packs and our freezer making some ice as well I haven’t had to buy ice in years now. I think $400 Is a little steep but it’s certainly worth $250-300 based on performance and durability alone

I bought a pelican cooler of equal size to that yeti. As a truck driver I was buying 3 or 4 bags of ice per week to keep food and drinks cold in the cheap cooler. I eventually bought a pelican and it paid for itself a few times over with how much money I saved on not buying ice. I went from buying 12 to 16 bags of ice depending on how much I was in the semi down to 3 or 4 bags of ice per month. If you'll use it alot it's well worth the money. Also... Pelican coolers are considerably better than yeti and cheaper prices. Better locks, bear proof instead of bear resistant and holds ice for 10 days opposed to the yeti that holds it for 7.

I own Yeti , and 4 ( similar quality style coolers ) and they all hold ice well . The only way for theses type of coolers to be worth it ( for the consumer ) is if you do outdoor activities often and for days , where ice is scarce . If your a weekender or periodic camper , go for the cheaper coolers they’ll serv you just fine … The secrete to keeping ice longer in any cooler , is keeping them covered and in shade (away from direct sunlight) A simple movers quilt over a 20.00 igloo will double its ice retention… 👍🏼👍🏼

If you want to turn a $50 cooler into a yeti. Do what i did. Buy an igloo cooler and drill a few holes top, bottom and front and rear side. Purchase a 3 or 4 cans of spray foam insulation. Using a screwdriver pull the plastic siding away from the insulation and spray the foam inside. I used this method for my work coolers ans my ice lasted just as long as those who payed triple what i did.

The durability and the ability to keep whatever cold for more than a day in crazy temperatures is why the yeti is worth it. For example, guys in the oilfield that need water to stay hydrated while the cooler sits in the bed of a truck in temps of over 100 all day while getting tools tossed on it makes it a great investment.

t watson there’s a difference. Where I go camping we go for 4 days and the nearest store is an hour away. With regular coolers we struggled to keep ice from melting. With the yetti ice melting is no longer a problem. I wouldn’t buy one for regular use.

The performance of cheap coolers to keep things either warm or cold can be greatly increased by keeping it covered with a blanket; Jacket, sleeping bag, spare clothes, or whatever. And don't forget to take advantage of shade. Thank you for your video. It was good to see a cross section of materials used.

I have used both coolers for long periods of time and looked up compare videos where they use the yeti and cheap coolers to see how long they hold ice. Yetti always comes in the top 5 of best coolers. however paying $400 is $200 cooler and $200 brand name. is it worth it??? depends on how much you'll use it.

Fun fact: The air in the top of the cheaper cooler is also a really good insulation as the specific heat capacity of air isnt great. another prime example on that is snow that falls and doesn't stay on the ground because it melts that happens due to the air not transporting the warmer tempratures before it touches the ground.
@tyrrellroach8122
@tyrrellroach8122 6 жыл бұрын
Technomen the air in the lid is only a good insulator if it is in multiple layers or is vacuum sealed which on this igloo it was neather so you might as will have plastic wrap for a lid

I think the Kong coolers are the best on the market right now with a 10+ day ice retention. It’s not just about how long it keeps ice but it’s the accessories. Their accessories meet the demand for fishermen, campers, hunters, and all outdoor enthusiasts. Latches and handles are amazing and everything is stainless steel. The engineers at Kong really thought through everything before making those things. Oh, they’re also made in USA and are bear proof.

I would not spend the extra money on a Yeti...because...you can buy the same cooler at Walmart under their store brand for less than $100. I have worked at a lot of factories in my lifetime, and I guarantee you that the Yeti cooler and the cheaper off brand coolers are mad in the EXACT same factory. The only difference is the logo and stuff that gets put on each. There is no "Yeti" factory making only Yeti coolers. They ALL come from the same factory, made the same way, just with different logos.

I worked at the GNC packaging facility for a couple years some time ago. I worked in the warehouse supplying the packaging lines with the pills, bottles, labels, and such. The pills all came from the same 55-gallon drums regardless which brand's bottle they were going in. Those vitamin C tablets you buy at the grocery store are exactly the same as the ones you'd buy at GNC or your local pharmacy. That job taught me to always buy store brand and save those pennies.

I agree..... for most people. If you need something really rugged the Yeti or a knockoff might be worth the investment. Average family camping or day at the beach a cheap cooler is just fine. I drive truck and see a number of trucks that have a Yeti secured to the catwalk behind the cab. Something facing that abuse needs to be solid and robust. Me, I have a cooler sized (65 qt) portable freezer/refrigerator in my truck that runs on either 12vdc or 120vac and adjusts from -6° to 50° and uses very little power..... and no ice. Cost me about $600 but has saved me more than that in bags of ice over the last two years.
