What's inside a Baseball Base?

We went to Comerica Park in Detroit Michigan to get a game used Baseball base to cut open to see what's inside. This bag was used when the Tigers played the New York Yankees!
Such a cool experience! As someone who played baseball growing up it was great to see what the inside of a bag looks like!

Lincoln (and Dan) -- I work for the company that makes those bases: Schutt Sports (say it like 'shut up and play'). It's cool to get to see what people will do with the bases once they've come off the field--stools, side tables, wall fields (someone bought three bases and a home plate for his man cave). I like the idea of mounting them to the wall on the long cut side--looks like someone threw it and it got stuck there. :) The base is a few parts: the metal plate and stem on the bottom, screws, metal strips, inner foam, outer rubber skin, and of course--the jewels on the sides. Each MLB team gets to choose what their jewels look like--the Tigers wanted to show that they were 4-Time AL Central Champion, and each team does something a little bit different. Well done!

To answer your question, most teams change bases for two reasons. 1. It's helpful for the bases to be as white as possible. It makes it easier for the umpires to make some close calls. Easier to see and stuff. So they replace them towards the end of the game. 2. Using multiple bases per game gives them more things to sell. Lol

I'm from England and I went to watch a Yankees game over in the US (follow them in the UK) and I bought a base out there, I cut the stake off of it and sawed it diagonally and use the quarters as shelves, a plaque on each shelf it's a great idea, I'd recommend it!

Highly informative. The construct of a modern baseball base is always overlooked, but it provides valuable information on why too many players get injured when sliding into bases. Got a feeling that pole which juts out from the bottom and is inserted into a shaft in the infield is the primary culprit because there's no give.

The reason they have the squishy stuff is first for support and second so that when a runner steps on the bag it makes a different sound then when the ball hits the glove so the umpire can tell weather the batter is safe or out!
