SME additional items, a pair of flip flops for the shower and laying around, a sewing kit, selection of needles and some sewing cotton and some waxed thread, a “blister kit” for the inevitable blisters, a small tube of antiseptic cream, some band aids, some clothes pegs to peg damp socks to your pack to dry while walking, a knife, fork and spoon kit (army), pack rain cover so it doesn’t get wet when you walk in the rain

Only two pair of pants and shirt? Did 5 caminos and on every camino, i have had stuff disappear from the clothes line while drying. I also take a length of line and clothes pins for drying. ALWAYS use rain pants! And i always carry a sleeping pad for those nights when there are no bunks left but the floor is available. Definitely need a "S" hook" for showers and a head lamp for night time bathroom breaks.

I saw people use a rain "wraparound skirt" lately, you just strap it around your waste and it goes down as long as you like. I'm not sure if they can be bought or are made diy, but seems to be a great light weight solution to keep your pants from getting soaking wet in a heavy down pour. You can turn the closed part to where ever wind and rain are coming your way.

Vaseline for my feet is at the top of my list. I put it all over my feet before I put my socks on, and amazingly, each Camino I’ve only gotten one tiny blister. Using Vaseline is the best Camino advice I was ever given. Also, earplugs and an eye mask. It can get really noisy in the hostels.

Polyester or polyamide works just as well as merino wool, except it doesn't provide much warmth, and it stinks when it dries with sweat. The key with these is having two pairs of socks, and washing/switching midday. Two hiking socks and one pair for sleep. Same for boxers and first torso layer. Pants and long sleeved shirts means less sunscreen, and less gunk on your clothes. There's arms and legs sleeves out there if you don't want to get an expensive pair of modular clothes. A cooling towel and/or water spray is 👌 Instead of that big jacket, I prefer two separate layers - One compactable wind-breaker, and a cheap 6€ polar fleece with a center zip for temperature regulation. Rain pants are fine, but for the torso an umbrella is the only way to go (unless you're cycle touring). It allows you to stay cool and will repell 100% of the water that hits it.

I'm a new Camino hiker and I'm landing in Lisbon. I've written down your recommendations. You are so engaging! Sleeping bag! Which do you recommend by weight? I'm trying for less than 1kg. Also, shoes. Everyone tells me a different story. I'm doing the Portuguese central from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela. Which shoes? And which socks other than merino? People tell me to get Injinji liner toe socks. Ix that Important?
@caminotellers Жыл бұрын
Hello Sandra, thanks for your message! As for the sleeping bag: we use one from decathlon which is approx 600g, but you can also check the sleeping linen. Shoes: check our video about shoes, it can help you! Erica uses new balance 6 hierro and before she had Merrell. We use trail running shoes, which are more versatile and flexible for all kind of terrain, perfect for the Portuguese way. Socks: you can also opt for hiking socks (again, we use the ones from decathlon). Hope it helps 😊

Good advice on the socks. Most, if not all videos I watch, some one gets blisters and they need treatment or they stop walking so they can heal.
@caminotellers Жыл бұрын
We found the distance or rather excess of distance a main issue for blisters. So walk less, at least for first few days. If your feet get wet, change the socks and don’t let the skin be constantly humid, that helps too!

Hola Ricky! Your videos are the greatest. I am hoping to walk in 2023. My one concern has been the so-called "bed race." I would prefer not to reserve ahead and just let the Camino provide. I appreciated your video on this, as it seemed that you always find a bed. But, have there been times when you had to sleep rough? Wild camp? Sleep Inn a churchyard?
@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын
Hi Len! Thanks for the feedback :) the bed race is in the most busy routs (sarria-santiago, last 119 km) in the busy period of may-aug... but, there ard plenty of albergues in the villages around bigger cities where people normally stay, do it's a matter to plan your trip differently than all other pilgrims that stick to the main stopping points. Anyways, once you here, you can reserve one day ahead if it's really busy ;) hugs and hope to see you on the Camino!
@jackg72252 жыл бұрын
I did the Del Norte last summer. We always found a place to stay. Some places limited their beds do to Covid but we always found a place. One time, the town had no open spots but I think we only had to walk another mile or little more to get a bed.
@ricardomoretti9695 Жыл бұрын
Having walked the Camino Frances twice, I would have to say that there are many sleeping amenities along the Way. The next village with accomodations is usually another 3, 5, 8 or at most another 10 km away so it is just a matter of keeping on walking to reach the next accommodations. There is also mass transit and taxi services if you find yourself in an pinch. And finally, some albergues will find a space on the floor for you to sleep on when needed.Finally, another option is to wait until morning to book your albergue. But if you are interested, there are people who have bivouacked the entire Camino Frances.

do you really need that jacket or the merino socks if you're doing camino in the summer?

Merino socks are always with me, they naturally regulate the temperature inside of my shoes… however how thick will they be is a different story. There are many thick hiking socks that obviously I wouldn’t use in summer. The new “smart-wool” running merino are great for that! What about a sleeping sheet/cocoon which I thought was required at some albergues?
@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын
In all albergues you get the sheets, they are one time use only. In some fancy onces you get the cotton sheets. As per my little experience. Hugs

Excellent content! Thank you for sharing! I have a recommendation. Perhaps you could post links to the equipment you are showing? You could make them affiliate links so that you earn a little something when your viewers purchase. I personally would be happy to follow these links and send a little $$ your way. Thanks again for everything and safe travels! Cheers!

Y gafas de sol y gorra también llevas no?. Y productos de primeros auxilios como tijeras, tiritas, hilo agujas etc.. no llevas?
@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын

Do you change pant for the rain or put rain pants on top ?
@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын
Nowadays, to minimise the weight I would only use a longer rain poncho. There are some with longer front which protects from rain, mostly. Obviously, rain trousers are the most water proof options, and many of them are designed to put them on with the shoes on, so when the rain surprise you, you can surprise the rain and jump into rain trousers ;) which camino are you planning?

ik ben wel benieuwd naar wat mensen meenemen als ze wel iets willen koken onderweg, of een tentje of tarp bij zich hebben. Dan ziet een ingepakte rugtas er toch iets anders uit...

It would definitely look different… maybe next year we do a little video about that 😉 hugs

What about different kinds of hats? You didn't mention anything about them.
@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reminding, so many details to have in mind! The straw hat with a big rim is a must in the summer time! Spain can get sunny. There are also different types of hiking hats with a neck protection which seem to be used by pilgrims too. But yes, I ll take one with me! Which is the Camino you do?

So no camping gear whatsoever? I assume you stay in hostels, and don't use a tent or tarp? I'm planning on walking the Camino Frances but not using hostels, to make the experience more like the original pilgrimage, I think the route with bars, cafés, hostels etc takes something away from the experience. Thanks

Hi Ricky, great video! Did you not bring any other footwear, like slippers? Also, on the day itself, besides water, would you bring a certain type of food? Thanks!
@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын
Hellooo! Sleepers or flip flops are definitely one of the thing I forgot to mention! And with the food…it all depends on what do you eat: if you a vegan or vegetarian you might take some extra nuts.. otherwise there are many options on the way. Some people who’s sugar can get low, tend to get some sweets 🍫… but remember, every extra item you get, you will have to Carry with you ;) hugs
