As a pre-nursing student, I'd say a good planner that works for you is essential. I also like to keep a small notebook for quick things I need to write down.

I’ve been a nurse for over 15 years. I Had no idea what specialty I wanted to go into until the last half of my last semester. I initially thought I wanted to do peds or labor & delivery when I first started nursing school. I ended up doing post operative cardiac surgery after an amazing clinical experience in the cardiac surgical icu. Nursing is so awesome in the vast array of sub specialties that there are. There is a niche for everyone and sometimes you have to be patient until it reveals itself to you.

My mom was convinced she would hate peds (my sisters and I were pretty young when she started and I think she just figured she was over being around kids all day). But turns out she loved it after her clinical rotation. A great clinical experience can be life changing!

Tip for anyone that doesn’t like starting a blank page: get a notebook/pen combo that has a little bit of ghosting. Ghosting is where you can see the ink through the page a little bit but it’s not like bleeding through. It looks a little messy, but it helps me not freak out when I see a blank page lol. It’s actually helped me like studying a bit more because I feel like I’ve gotten more done.

Hi Kiara! Super cute video! I recently started as a nurse in an IV therapy clinic, I purchased some “easy” tourniquets from Amazon for less than $10! I never got the hang of tying a tourniquet with the one included in IV start kits 😭. They also hurt a lot less for the patient which is always a plus! Best of luck in your 3rd semester 💕

Not in nursing school, but I come from a lot of Drs and Nurses (including my bro and mom)! Anyways my favorite thing in my backpack is my “personalized first aid kit” which consists of things that I could need in the drop of a hat. Wrist brace, aleve, excedrin, contact drops, caps stick, etc…. And also the snacks that I always have.

I am not in nursing school but I have a medical disability so my purse is a ready-go emergency bag lol. If anyone needs anything they always ask me because I am essentially a walking pharmacy at this point (I also have Advil stashed everywhere). My favorite thing that I have on my backpack is my "medical alert, medical equipment inside" keychain that I just got so if anything happens to me it's clear that there is medicine/supplies in my bag! p.s. I would love a nursing school vs. apple watch video because I work at a college that is weird about smart watches and testing as well!

NG Tubes are hard. Nobody likes doing them. My dad has had them when in the emergency room so many times. But, the last time was a disaster and caused trauma to his nose. It was horrible. I am so glad we have new nurses coming up in the ranks who are going to keep our loved ones in excellent care! It’s made me very humble being in college to be a paramedic. When you get a chance can you show us how you organize your medical notes on notability?

In Germany our touniquets are much more easy to use, they have a plastic clasp and you tighten them just by pulling on the elastic, maybe you could find some of those on the Internet if you are interested - I also think they might be more comfortable for the patient because the elastic is thicker and it’s more of a fabricy kind of strap than pure rubber

"For some reason I'm always in pain" * laughs in chronic pain * I carry more variety of meds than you and bandaids of course. Gotta have the usual chapstick and a backup one that definitely never leaves the bag because how can you focus when you have crunchy dry lips 😅 Can I just say I love that you carry so much stuff and even backups because that was always me in school. Even in highschool some friends called me Office Depot because I always had enough pens and supplies. As far as pencils though 🤔 I think math was the last time I used pencils. All my notes were always in pen. And I switched from my laptop to an iPad mini in grad school because it was so much lighter to carry on my commute. A backup battery is a must for me.

RN in Sweden with 3 years experience in cardio-thoracic/vascular surgery and NICU. Since august I’m back in school for my specialty; midwifery. L&D and woman’s healthcare is VERY different here in comprehension to the US. As a midwife I have the exclusive responsibility for normal pregnancy and birth, with doctors near by when needed. It’s so much fun and in January 2023 I’m graduating after a total of 4,5 years of studying (with 3 years of working in between degrees). What’s the view on multi resistant bacteria and staff hygiene in USA? Your guidelines are so much different then ours and I’m curious to know how you think about it as a student? In Sweden you change clothes provided by the hospital when coming there. Always short sleeved tops, hair up, no nail polish or acrylic nails etc, no watches or jewelry. Clothes go to wash at hospital after ended shift. Use of gloves only if risk for contact with body fluids and always single use-apron in thin plastic in contact with patients. This is so interesting since (as I understand) staff in North America use gloves a lot and the use of accessories and clothes differ very much. So, what’s your thoughts about all of this? Do you (as students, not individual persons) reflect about this stuff or is just normalized? Best regards,

Wow that's a lot of stuff 😂 I'm a Dutch nursing student and have like half of your stuff in my bag. We for once don't need our own stethoscope etc. Its funny to see what bands you use before putting an iv in. Here in the Netherlands we use one that clicks then pull and it's nice and tight, it's like 2 sec work without any practice 😊 Whats the workload of studying for you? I feel like the workload for college is way less here than in the US

My sister is starting Nursing classes this fall and I want to get her a backpack, would you recommend a larger backpack?

I love mine! I don’t feel like I need anything bigger but I’d look at all the north face backpacks they have good options!

I don't have a backpack (online high school), but I will, hopefully, be starting university this fall and I'm currently creating a list of things I need for college, but a backpack is not on there. Is that something I will need when in college? Also, I'm not personally planning on going into nursing, but I love the nursing videos!

If you plan on in-person classes at uni, a backpack is a must. Or a tote bag. Something to carry your notebook, textbooks, etc.

Hi I recently found out I got on the alternative list/ waitlist and I will find out by August 1st if I get into the program or not. Just wondering how that experience was for you I know you got waitlisted from a previous one of your videos . Last year at my school there were 10 people on the waitlist. How was your experience?

This is so funny to me as danish nurse student. I literally only have my laptop, charger, food and water with me for class. While for the periods I'm in clinics I have my badge, computer, charger (which I rarely use), pens, shoes, my watch to put on the uniform, my union badge, some pieces of paper and my pocket books. I literally have a year left of my education and I don't know how to put in IV's, draw blood or anything BUT I do know how to use catheders, take a EWS, like the basics. We don't get teached in how to use IV's or draw blood. We can only pray for a a real human in clinics will let us try on them. We basically have more focus on theories like Kari Martinsen, Virginia hendersson and how to write a bachelors thesis

So interesting to compare and contrast! I too feel like I've learned nothing and we don't really get to practice unless maybe we get lucky at clinical. I guess we really do learn on the job 😂 Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience, I love hearing about everyone's journey!
