Why should the deliberations of an Ethics Committee be in the dark?

For similar reason that Grand Jury deliberations are in secret. Those get unsealed only when prosecutors have convinced them that there are charges worth pursuing. The committee is supposed to leave their party affiliation outside the room and look at every referral independently. If those deliberations were fully transparent and every referral was fully reported, it would become just another process for political weaponisation. Interviews and evidence collected by the committee are “privileged” meaning that there is plenty of scope for a political opponent to make highly defamatory utterances in that forum which could then be freely reported without risk of being sued for defamation. In a court setting, the telling of “distorted truths” happens all the time. Judges will frequently find a witness testimony to be “unreliable” and only in a tiny proportion of cases will anyone be charged with perjury.

@@scottloewke5199 you’re welcome. A slightly different question is “if the ethics committee has unanimously determined a negative finding and has decided its recommendation, why should it be suppressed?” then my answer is “it shouldn’t. Ever.”

@@bernardkealey6449 My thought on a tangent to this question is that a unanimous decision leaves no ambiguity about how the Committee members voted. As long as there is some doubt, it makes it a more difficult political proposition for those who would go after them for how they voted. They couldn't be sure that they will primary out of office a member who is "on their side". But more to your question, I don't think any report of this Committee should be suppressed, regardless of the vote, because that smacks of corruption. The results of the investigation are what the taxpayers paid for and deserve to know. There was a time not too long ago, when a lot of the behaviors we see today would have been immediately and definitively disqualifying. I'm not so naive as to think that, nowadays, a negative report will stop political tribalists from voting for someone like Matt Gaetz, but people should be able to factor in character into their voting decisions. It's the voters' choice to decide his political fate, not his colleagues in Congress by suppressing damaging information.
