I totally relate to dreading the "what do you do for a living?" lol. As a social worker, I get a lot of "Wow, I couldn't do your job", and a lot of "I'm really worried about a kid because of xyz, should I report it to child services?" My state has mandatory reporting for all people over 18, so usually the answer is yes. And then my pharmacist husband gets all the medical questions and strange rashes shown to him at parties.

I agree. It’s rather quite simple. Example, if you’re an accountant or financial advisor at your job. And then at the end of the day, you leave the office to go home or hang out with your friends at a party, you don’t want people to expect you to do their finances for them simply because it’s what you do for a job. You’re there at the party to enjoy, not to work.

To be honest, I don't think I could do all of it within the deadlines because I am not neurotypical. I wouldn't be able to do full time work and then internships on the side. That is insane. How sad that such a valuable career is so incredibly difficult. On top of that, I can't imagine putting that many years of work to earn so little. Those who can endure are definitely incredible and I am so thankful for those of you that do this line of work- but my heart aches that it is this complicated and that what you earn as a therapist is so meager compared to the work put it. Oi.
@juliejealousy6 жыл бұрын
Rachel Cyders I’m not neurotypical and I’m in school to be a counselor. I live in a different state though. It’s possible. I know that you can complete my grad program in 5 years but full time is 2. And then you need the 3000 hours within 8 years, which is what I read recently. I think it’s possible to do it part time and with boundaries so you can care for your mental health, but that’s just my opinion. I used to be in a way worse place with my mental health and wouldn’t be able to handle it but I’m in a better place now. I hope that things get better for you over time. 💕

Kati Morton Yes, I completely agree. I don't know how, but I deeply hope it changes someday. My interests and skills are both in mental health and teaching, and it's been difficult to make any forwards motion knowing the financial situation either paths would put me into. I don't care to be rich, but I do long to be financially stable enough to support a family of my own someday. I know it's not impossible, but the lack of security freezes me up.
@juliejealousy6 жыл бұрын
Rachel Cyders well my mom is a teacher and she struggles with an anxiety disorder. I actually work in a school as a teacher’s aide and have managed but yes, unfortunately it doesn’t pay well. I think if you truly love something you should strive to do it, but at your own pace of course. It’s nice that a lot of schools offer part time programs for that reason. The teaching route in the states from what I know is a bit easier because the masters program is a lot shorter and you need way less internship hours to become a teacher.

I am not a therapist. Heck, I'm not always the healthiest and need a therapist, but my PTSD makes me quiet and more of a listener than than a talker. This causes people tell me things I am not always able to deal with. I think with the high-speed lifestyle so many people live under, when they find someone who listens, they use that opportunity. That may be why even when you don't tell someone you are a therapist, they are still telling you things. You make a good listener even when not in therapy mode. It may be a bad hypothesis, but it has been something I have noticed around me for years as well.

Kati, I love that you don't tell people you're a therapist, I'm a trainee lawyer and as soon as someone knows that suddenly they want to tell you all their legal issues, which unless you're wearing that "hat" is something you can't do anything about. Glad it happens in other professions to!

That feeling when I discovered this video just when it was released without even getting the notification yet, haha! I love love love these "behind the scenes" kinda videos so much! 💕 Looking forward to watching this while packing up and getting ready to move out on my own for the first time next week! 😄

You definitely put off a vibe--everything about your demeanor says "safe" to me, so it totally makes sense that you get a lot of oversharing.

Hello Kati! I’m a therapist too and what you said is super relatable! I’m an LAC and it’s taken me FOREVER to get my LPC. NJ requires 4500 hours and I had to put part of my counseling on hold to raise my autistic child. I’m getting there though. I absolutely love your videos and I’m glad that I’ve been able to find you! Best!!

I am in my second year of a 5 year doctoral counseling program. I appreciate your perspective on what real life is like while being a therapist a lot! Maybe you could tell us some more about those different settings and how their demands affected your self care?

I’m currently a music and psychology major as an undergrad too (it added an extra two years for me 🙄)! But how cool!! Love your work and this channel! I watch religiously! ❤️ I’ll be starting my master’s program in August (for both my LPC and LMFT here in Texas, no music!). This was very cool to hear what to expect! It seems like an endless process at the moment... lol

Oh my god literally the first time I watched one of your videos just the way you talked and looked as you talked I actually thought “is this girl a counselor?” That counselor vibe thing is so true it reminds me of the school counselors
@TManNick176 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of us who work in the field put off that vibe unintentionally. I work in addictions counseling, and random strangers tell me their life story ALL THE TIME. It's one of the main reasons I don't take public transportation that much anymore.

I'm a therapist myself (Clinical social worker) and I myself don't like to tell people sometimes what I do because usually I come across two types of people: A) they'll tell you everything that's going on and at that moment you're not in therapy mode or B) Some people would stop talking because they probably think you're diagnosing them at the moment (which is NEVER the case). I love helping others just like you Kati, but there's a time and place where I like to relax for a bit and not be a therapist a let loose and chill. The only time I'm in therapist mode is when I'm actually seeing client's. Other than that, I'm just a regular person like everyone else. So I know how you feel in that area. Great video. I love watching your videos Kati.

Could you talk about dealing with fear in your next video? - don't read if you get triggered by other's anxieties - I'm super scared of the future of our planet and I think it's a rational fear, not so much to do with personal but a bigger picture. Sometimes I feel suicidal because of it. I'm scared of becoming my dad who took his life when he was middle-aged.

0Flow0 sorry about your father. I too get really upset about our impact on the planet. It can be really overwhelming

0Flow0 hi first off I am so sorry to hear about youre day .secondly I completely I understand your fears because I have the same trigger fears. I am actually going to see someone tomorrow about my axienty issues and I think it should be the,first step for you if u havent .I wish u well.,💟

0Flow0 I Relate with this so much. I hate to see our planet being destroyed by stupid people and just people in general, and I hate to see it affect the health of people and of our future. It is honestly the most depressing and empty and out of control feeling and I struggle with it almost daily. Also relate to the feeling suicidal because of it. Hang in there 🌎♻️

You’re not the only person here scared about our planet, don’t worry. I’m scared about every thing that reigns from government issues to the planet itself. Sometimes I cry because I’m so scared of nuclear stuff and war...it’s a horrible thing to think about. Now thay we’re in the midst of a soon-to-be worldwide virus, I’ve been paranoid af.

Yep I have always had people tell me all their info moments after I meet them. Think that's why I decided to go back to school to be a counselor...If people are already comfortable (apparently) talking to me about intimate stuff I might as well learn the best way to respond and not cause harm....And learn how to turn that off.

I was seeing a therapist at a community clinic who in her spare time worked (for tips only) in a restaurant owned by friends. She worked there to help the restaurant get by; she didn’t seriously need the income. But it was her second job, and as I was attending a group luncheon that started 15 minutes after my therapy session ended, there she was, unexpectedly, filling my water glass. No weirder experience in my life than her pouring water for me just 15 minutes after I poured my innermost self out to her!

9:54 - The exact reason why I'm thinking I should become a therapist, psychologist, or something in the mental health field. I'm 38 now, been in a completely different line of work for a long time. Kinda want a change and this just makes sense. Thanks for your videos, really helps.

Dude, that last part about having people approach you with their problems is super relateable lol. I'm currently in my 2nd semester of my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, on top of that I work as a Graduated Administrator at my University's Counseling center. That being said, I am glad I found your channel. It's a great guide to deciding if I want to get my LPC and stuff. Keep making content!

I'm super glad for this video! I'm on my path to hopefully becoming a therapist, and it's honestly all so confusing on what I'm supposed to do, what degrees I need to get... This definitely helped clarify some for me. I currently only have an associates degree in psychology, and honestly was feeling a little lost on where to go next since I did those two years at a community college.

Thank god for this video Kati, we have a kid and I also took music as my degree but I find myself to be a natural counselor that tie into my card readings and interest in other realms etc. So we’re wondering what’s the next career direction for me other than solo and KZbin and web products etc etc

I didn’t realize your licensing exam was so long! I’m a RN, and mine had 265 questions (but ours varies it can be anywhere from 75 questions to 265). I also run into people wanting to tell me ev-er-ything when they find out what I do, except it’s a little more clinical, like “do you know what this is?” And shows me a random bump, it doesn’t bother me really, but I always just say “you should have it looked at” even if I know, because I can’t truly know, nor can I diagnose. I’m not sure if it’s because of my career or that I’ve been in therapy for a while (10-ish years) but I have friends who are therapists and I’m pretty hyper vigilant about making sure I don’t share too much with them. I’m sure you don’t mind talking to your friends, but I just try to be cognizant of their time and space so if I need to talk I either save it for my own therapist or maybe a different friend.

Last year I was feeling really isolated and decided to talk to strangers because I didn't feel like I could talk normally with my friends. But I ended up listening to strangers about their problems so I get that vibe you're talking about.
