They carry two drivers as a safety consideration. They're probably unionised, and the labour contract (and/or government regulations and/or company policy) will likely specify the maximum number of continuous driving hours permitted per shift. When I drove long-distance coaches in Western Canada back in the 1980s, our company operated that kind of system. I never drove more than 8-10 hours continuous, unless it couldn't be avoided. 🇨🇦

Niagara Falls, Ontario really saw a list of attractions that could bring tourists and said *"Yes."* as if the gorgeous falls wasn't enough. You don't need to explain yourself for wearing a suit on a bus. You're a sophisticated bus connoisseur and the suit only enhances the trip report. It's nice to stop at other rest stops and all but all the cool kids stop at the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area in South Amboy...truly his legacy. To be fair to that Flixbus stop location in NYC, at least it's right by the Moynihan Train Hall so you could get something there. I'm pretty sure that S button is for sound since the button opposite of it is to mute. And a flight between NYC and Toronto actually takes an hour and forty minutes! But not being allowed to have food on a TEN-hour bus ride is just torture.

@@memesthatmakeyouwannadie3133 Hey don't disrespect the Niagara downtown like that. Not all visitors are going to spend the entire day down by the Falls. And the tiny tourist building at that site doesn't offer much in terms of food variety options. In Niagara downtown you can get a whole range of foods from pizza & burgers to Chinese to fine Italian dining. The giant ferris wheel is also a good spot if you wanna see the entire Niagara area from the sky. The Ripley's Museum is worth a visit to if you've never been in one before or if you like weird stuff.

The reason for the 2-drivers is because …legally, a passenger-carrying driver can only drive 10hrs…and the way Flixbus writes the schedules, they turn the buses around when they get to the final destination. On this schedule, one driver probably drives down from Montreal to NYC, and then the other driver will drive NYC Montreal. Keep in mind that unlike Greyhound, Flixbus doesn’t own any buses nor perform their own maintenance. they just simply contract the work to charter/tour bus companies. Also the charter/tour bus company does their own maintenance and make their own rules in terms of passenger etiquette

I'm pretty sure that all of Flixbus's routes out of NYC are contracted to the various Chinatown bus lines. Those bus lines used to have a website for online booking but Flixbus kinda acts as distribution platform for them these days.

"What is Scarborough? This place is so bizarre" I was about to say it's bizarre to the point it has a line that's completely different from the rest of the TTC subway system that they're finally getting rid of for a legit subway but of course that's why you're there lol. And here's a list of random Niagara Falls things that made their way to the Middle East: 1. Marineland walruses. The park's keeping of marine mammals is controversial (many belugas and orcas died there), and the park is involved in several lawsuits related to the practice. After an animal abuse settlement with a former trainer who threatened to steal the walruses, Marineland sold their two walruses to a brand-new SeaWorld in Abu Dhabi. 2. A LEGITIMATE PHARAOH MUMMY! Four mummies were bought in the 1850s from grave-robbers for the Niagara Falls Museum. Unknown to anyone for 140 years, one of the mummies at the museum was RAMESSES I! This was discovered after the mummies were sold to Emory University in Atlanta. Ramesses I was returned to Egypt in 2003 3. The Pile-Driver. This drop tower sat atop the former WWE store from 2002 to 2011. When the store closed in 2011, it was sold to the Magic Land Theme Park in Amman, Jordan

It would be interesting if Amtrak did try overnight trains to Canada. A few years ago, the US and Canadian governments signed an enhancement to their preclearance agreement to allow for CBP preclearance officers at train stations. However, the wheels of bureaucracy move slowly and, given money is involved, it goes even slower.
@MilesinTransit
@MilesinTransit Жыл бұрын
The train takes long enough in NY that maybe the border crossing could be scheduled at a somewhat reasonable time? You could probably get away with pre-clearance in Toronto, but the train makes too many valuable stops in NY to justify pre-clearance there, I think.
@davidwolfhudson
@davidwolfhudson Жыл бұрын
@@MilesinTransit At least as of now, no foreign government has placed their own preclearance officers in the US. I'm not an expert in the bilateral agreement but I believe the CBSA *could* do it but don't really have the resources (or desire to expend resources) for it. The CBP contingent in Canada - who are housed at US Government expense - number in the hundreds. When I was working in Canada, the talk was always about the station in Montreal being the first rail station to get CBP preclearance, which kind of makes sense given that there's not nearly as much between Montreal and the New York border compared to all of the cities and towns in the Golden Horseshoe (no disrespect to St-Bernard de Lacolle). For the reason you said, I doubt that CBSA preclearance into Canada would ever be a viable option, at least the way the technology and the law work presently.

You must be really young. Almost thirty years ago Amtrak did have an overnight train from DC to Montreal, Trains 60/61, "The Montrealer". I was an Amtrak Lead Service Attendant in that era and worked it off and on for a few years. It mostly had a diner/lounge arrangement for food service, with either microwaved or convection oven prepared meals. One of the few trains to have a "Slumber Coach", a mini-sleeper compartment, cheaper than a full-roomette or bedroom, in addition to a regular 10/6 sleeper. It had fairly good ridership, up until the original route suffered a washout in late Winter 1987, then they had to detour via New London, CT., adding a lot of time. Montreal and VIA were always a pain for Amtrak to deal with in terms of getting good servicing of the train, the cleaning people were absolute thieves, who stole anything of value not under lock and key. It was expensive for Amtrak to pay for using Central station, and Canadian Customs would not get on the train at the border and just do their inspection riding into Montreal, even though nobody was going anywhere else. U. S. Customs would get on on the return trip at the border and do their inspection down to St. Albans, VT. In Spring '95, Amtrak finally had enough and cut back the service to St. Albans and made it the current daylight service, "The Vermonter", using a cab car to run push-pull through reverse running to Palmer, MA either way. Amtrak still serves Montreal in daylight from NYC up the other side of Lake Champlain on "The Adirondack".

Many years ago my mother and I did the trip TO to NYC... the bus must have been on it's last lags, it would wonder to one side of the lane, the driver would crank the steering wheel a full half turn and bus would take about 90 seconds to drift over to the opposite side of the lane, the driver countered that with another half turn of the steering wheel in the opposite direction. I only remember one rest stop, it was a full bus, I think it was 20 min, so of course people lined up for food, one person took a 25 min rest stop and the driver was pulling out of the lot as buddy came running out in a panic yelling at the bus to stop and his partner was screaming at the driver to stop... what an adventure, I was in my teens back then, the trip left me with a strong memory, I'm 70 now.. At the Canadian border it took about at least an hour for everybody to get off the bus, go through Canadian customs, and then re board the bus to Toronto. We didn't get into Toronto bus terminal to at least 12 :45 to 1 o'clock in the morning. I was still able to get to my hotel on the TTC Subway and streetcar to my hotel. Add a fun time, although I didn't have much money up there. On my second trip to Toronto, I went up by train, which was much better. Hopefully by trip number 3, I'll try flying up to Toronto!!

No idea how it is for the Flixbus trips in North America, but here in Europe Flixbus is pretty reliable. The only times the buses were ever late or delayed was due to unforeseen circumstances, such as traffic jams caused by traffic accidents or in the summer months traffic jams caused by tourists trying to escape to their travel destinations. The buses have always been clean, too, if you don’t count the toilet which is pretty much always without water and toilet paper. But oh well, they make frequent enough stops that it doesn’t really matter. The drivers have been nice, save for one time when me and my partner were traveling with one single suitcase between us and it weighed over 25 kg, and the driver made a whole situation out of it.

Definitely interesting to hear your experiences and a great trip report! I took "FlixBus" back in March from Chicago to St Paul, booked a ticket last minute 3 days before the trip, and it was only $52 with tax! Not bad at all, but when I got to the bus in downtown Chicago I was surprised to see they actually contracted the Voigt's bus company, an operator based out of Fridley MN! Even better was the bus was wrapped in this great Minnesota themed livery with no dots, and I had quite a pleasant 8.5 hour journey! Notable differences with the FlixBus that you got, and the route, are that we had one driver, and actual 110V outlets with pretty good seat quality! They didn't recline like on that bus but did the job great, and the buses had on board entertainment screens (that didn't get used) as well as allowing us to eat. There was a single rest stop on the whole journey, at the Wisconsin Dells Kwik Trip, which I think makes for an interesting comparison to the numerous rest stops your route took. Agree with you. Overnight bus is not too bad so long as there aren't too many stops...3 is too many for me. Ideally this bus should be an express with 1 customs stop and that's it. That said, the train is longer by about 2 hours, but you can also sleep on the train during the day. I'm more of a train person. It's more comfortable. Flying can be stressful as airports re chaotic these days...

It is interesting that Flixbus and other 'discount' scheduled bus operations are on parking lots or along the streets near Penn Station when the Port Authority Bus Terminal (at 8th/9th Ave - 40th-42nd Street) was built in the early 1950's to get the long distance and regional bus services off the streets. By the way, finally a trip with no significant drama. Kinda boring for us, a pleasure for you.

The pickup location reminds me of both ends of a Megabus trip from Chicago to Indianapolis in 2015. The Chicago end was just on a low use street a block from Union Station (and in front of the old retail entrances to the then vacant giant old post office building) and the Indy side was on the curb at the Government center. It is actually a good spot to make connections to several local IndyGO bus routes.

If you really want to know what it's like to take Flixbus, you need to get stranded with minimal updates for over 5 hours to ultimately get denied your refunds by their customer support. The gall on them to blow you off for extended periods of time, refuse refunds, and act like they are doing you a favor with a ten dollar voucher is insane. That's the real flixbus experience. Just check their reviews.

Interesting video. I've never made the crossing with the bus over to Toronto. It's also interesting that FlixBus is The parent company of Greyhound. Greyhound does operate regular service from the Port authority bus terminal to Toronto. The multiple rest stops may not necessarily be for the convenience of passengers, but for the drivers. A long trip through the night is a hard ride to make behind the wheel. Having driven the route from New York to Buffalo for both Greyhound and New York Trailways I know just how tough that drive is. Who you initially thought was an attendant on the bus was probably a relief driver. Considering the distance driven between New York and Toronto, a single driver may have ran out of hours if they did all of the driving before reaching Toronto. Traditionally, both Greyhound and New York Trailways would have their drivers relieved in Buffalo coming from New York.

Of course driving overnight means there is little traffic. You can drive straight through to follow the time and get to the destination on time. Not get stuck in daytime traffic. I think the benches at the reception center were taken away because of COVID. Maybe they will be back soon.

Out of all my bus experiences (Flixbus, Barons, Hoosier Ride/Miller, and Greyhound) Flixbus was the best for comfort, reliability, and customer service. The stops always seem to be a bit awkward though (although in Indianapolis it's much easier to connect to city buses from the Flixbus stop versus the stop for all other intercity buses).

It is sooo weird seing this. I'm from Germany and took Flixbus back in the time, when they hadn't merged with Meinfernbus and shortly after. Back then, their service was often below average. The wifi was often not working or extremely slow, the busses were late or skipped stops and even if a ride halfway through Germany would cost only around 10 Euro, the busses were sometimes nearly empty, since taking a Flixbus was - and often is - slower than taking a train or going by car. Also, the concept of long distance busses wasn't realy a thing back then in Germany. It is strange to see a company that many had doomed 10 years ago now not only operating all over Europe but also in north america.

@francissager3133
@francissager3133 Жыл бұрын
The train is a longer trip. You leave Penn Station, then it's on to Yonkers, Croton-Harmon, Poughkeepsie, Rheinbeck, Hudson, Albany, Schenectady, Amsterdam, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, NY, Niagara Falls, ON (crew change from Amtrak to VIA Rail, and Canadian customs) St Catherine's, maybe some other intermediate stops, and Toronto. The bus, if we're talking Greyhound or Trailways, leaves NYC, rest stop in Goldsboro, PA; Scranton, PA (sometimes); Binghamton, NY; Syracuse, Rochester, Batavia, Buffalo, Fort Erie, ON (Canadian customs); and Toronto. The benefit of the bus, ridership may put multiple buses on the same schedule, allowing one or more buses to skip all or most intermediate stops. FlixBus only owns buses through Greyhound. So when you ride a green and orange FlixBus, it's a separate independent company operating under FlixBus branding. It also allows that company to operate direct service, and not make all the stops traditional carriers like Greyhound/Trailways make.

@RafaRadityo7 It all depends on the area. Sometimes there may be only one driver. On specific long-distance routes like Toronto - New York, they have two drivers. The rest stops I think are for the bus driver as much as the passengers. Driving at night is tiring.
