I feel like a Miles in Transit meetup (if one ever happened) should either take place at one of these suburban gas stations that get used as ‘bus stops’ or at one of those least-used Amtrak stations.

"At least it's Hepatitis A" 💀and her reaction to the REM Windows computer chime at the end is so pure. Since Troy was briefly mentioned, here's Troy lore: Troy is home to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest private engineering and technical university in the US, founded in 1824 as well as the Emma Willard School which was the first women's higher education institution in the US. Troy is nicknamed the Collar City because it was once a manufacturing center for shirts, shirtwaists, collars, and cuffs. Hannah Lord Montague invented the detachable collar when she cut off the collars of her husband's shirts since only the collar was soiled, bound the edges and attached strings to hold them in place to avoid cleaning them. On the topic of Quebec farmland, poutine originated in the farmland part of the province! Poutine was created in the 1950s in the Centre-du-Québec region, which include Drummondville, Victoriaville, and Bécancour. This region is known as the breadbasket of Quebec as it's big on agriculture like poultry and more importantly, the dairy industry. Hence having plenty of cheese curds! The region produces more dairy products than all of Canada’s maritime provinces combined.

The cool bridge at 5:42 is the Thaddeus Kosciusko Bridge aka the Twin Bridges. Opened in 1959 and were named in honor of Tadeusz Kościuszko (just like the bridge between Queens and Brooklyn), a Polish military leader who helped the Continental Army in its struggle as a colonel as he related to their cause when it comes to fighting for independence. He designed and oversaw the construction of state-of-the-art fortifications, including those at West Point. His former home in Philly is the smallest unit of the NPS system. When he returned to Europe, he led an uprising in 1794 against the Prussians and Russians. He ended up getting captured, and the defeat of this uprising led to the third and final partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Albany area was originally inhabited by the Mohican who called it Pempotowwuthut-Muhhcanneuw, meaning "the fireplace of the Mohican nation". The Mohawk to the west called it Sche-negh-ta-da, "through the pine woods", which is where the name Schenectady came from! The area was settled by Dutch colonists who built Fort Nassau for fur trading and then Fort Orange. It was taken over in 1664 by the English who named it Albany in honor of the Duke of Albany, the later King James II. Albany in turn refers to the parts of Scotland north of the River Forth.

I love that Aleena is wearing her Idaho flag hat from the Greyhound video...ah yes, ✨continuity✨. Empire State Plaza was the idea of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who was inspired to create the complex after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands visited Albany for a celebration of the area's Dutch history. It's sadly another example of diverse neighborhoods being ripped apart for big 1960s projects by the state as an African and Italian neighborhood was destroyed to make way for it. It was inspired by Brasília and India's Chandigarh and designed by Wallace Harrison, who also worked on the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center...a Robert Moses project that destroyed the African/Puerto Rican San Juan Hill neighborhood. The NY State Capitol on the other hand is pretty cool. It was built between 1867 and 1899. Three teams of architects worked on the design of the Capitol during the 32 years of its construction which were Thomas Fuller (from 1867 to 1875), Leopold Eidlitz and Henry Hobson Richardson (1875 to 1883), and Isaac G. Perry (1883 to 1899). Thomas Fuller was the same guy who designed the buildings of Parliament Hill in Ottawa! As the result of the different architects, the state capitol is in different styles throughout including Romanesque and French Renaissance. Inside are 25 murals created by William deLeftwich Dodge that depict everything from Samuel de Champlain to New York troops serving in World War I.

Trailways was and still exists of an association of regional bus lines that had national coordination that competed with Greyhound. They had their own custom buses made in Europe, 'Golden Eagle' a split level bus like Greyhound had in the 1950's to 1970's. In the 1980's, much of Trailways was taken over by Greyhound and parts are as you noted, part of other companies now. NY Trailways is part that serves upstate and western NY State.

If you guys are looking for a new form of torture, you could try Ontario's longest bus route, which is the Ontario Northland service from Winnipeg to Ottawa, a trip of over 2000 km (1300 miles), which takes two days. It's advertised as a bunch of different routes but if you look at the schedules it seems to actually be the same bus which goes all the way across the province.

The long explanation at the start of the video just shows how unreliable some US long distance bus routes are, which is a shame because as Miles has said in previous videos, so many people who can’t afford a plane or private car still depend on them. On an unrelated note, I will definitely check out Defazio’s any time I’m in the Albany area, that pizza looked SO GOOD. On an even more unrelated note, I just started at CRLS yesterday, and so far I am really pleased with it, although a bit overwhelmed by the shear number of kids. I am taking RSTA exploratory, and I have enjoyed that the most. Things have probably changed a lot since you were there Miles, but there are some teachers I’ve met who have been there for like 30 years, like Mr Benson, Ms Read, and the head of RSTA (who’s name I forget), and I was curious if you knew any of them. If you know any transit loving teachers, I would love to hear about them so I can talk to them.

RSTA exploratory was really fun, and in some ways was my first foray into video editing! I would talk about transit a lot with Mr. Powers, the band teacher, who's just an all around great guy (he used to have random Miles paraphernalia posted outside his room, I'm not sure if he still does). I can't think of anyone else I specifically talked about transit with, but it's also been a minute since I've been there...take Econ if you get the chance, since it has a long urban planning project that was probably the most interesting assignment I got in high school. And Ms. Giacchino, the Latin teacher, is the sweetest person ever, and I think the only reason I stayed in Latin all the way to AP was because of her 😂

Canada Customs (which is now CBSA/AFSC) was very easy when I went on a school trip to Montreal in 1989. All they did was ask people if they had non-US passports, and processed the six who did. We were on our way to Montreal in less than 15 minutes. Even when I crossed into Niagara Falls ON nine years ago, the CBSA was very quick and friendly. Me: "I'm going to be here for two hours." CBSA agent: "Thank you, sir...enjoy your stay." I even took a picture of their "Welcome to Canada/Please report" sign without incident, along with the two flags that hung in the middle of the bridge. The US side was a little more...efficient. In 1989, they had us show our birth certificates and we were on our way in 20 minutes. At Niagara Falls NY, the line was long, but we got processed (of course, post 9/11 they were not a humorous bunch).

I haven't taken a bus out of Albany since I was still in college. There are less seats in the station now as compared to then. The old seats also used to have those really old school black-and-white coin-op TVs. Otherwise, it's about the same (not swell). It has likely had a dirty reputation for longer than I've been alive (I'm 39). There are rather substantial plans to replace the station with a new $80 million complex, but that's years away (and will apparently have less gates?). DeFazio's: Never been. The place is 4 miles from my house, but there are 7 pizza places or so that are closer. I believe it's in Troy's Little Italy neighborhood. I should try it sometime. The idea of catching Trailways buses separately from the Greyhound station is a relatively recent change. They used to use the Greyhound station as well. Years ago, they had their own separate building around the corner from the Greyhound station on Broadway, but it's been closed since the late 1980s/early 1990s, I think. As you can imagine, Door 6 for the New York City buses is very busy. There's something like 12 buses a day to New York from there and on Fridays, they'll sometimes double up on certain runs (Ex: 5:30 p.m.). Megabus stops on the other side of the Hudson River at the Albany/Rensselaer train station. I always felt in the early 2000s that Trailways and Greyhound were nearly identical experiences. You're probably more likely to get a less full bus on Trailways than Greyhound. Had to take an 8 p.m. local from New York to get to Albany in college that stopped in New Paltz (college town), Rosendale and Kingston (more or less the local Trailways headquarters). Never had much in the way of problems on those buses except for the violation of personal space (Ex: Large people using you as a pillow). Also, not happy about the loss of the seat back tray, but the buses were always pretty tight. I could never get my laptop fully open due to the lack of space. And yes, the eyesore warehouse does show up. That building (an 11-story place that once served as a storage place for cold goods) has been closed since 1989 and is so huge that no one can figure out what to do with it. The city would prefer it demolished (which would cost millions) so that something else could be built there, but the current owner came up with these grandiose plans for it that will probably never happen. The last 5 years or so have been a series of court battles, unpaid taxes and other acts of stupid. My understanding is that it's outright hazardous inside and any plans to fix it up so that it could be used by the general public for anything would cost 8-figures.

So welcome to my neck of the woods. As such, this comment might be long. 05:08 - Glad between this and the Lake Shore Limited video you got to see that there's a bit more to Albany than the four state buildings you can see from the Albany-Rensselaer station. 05:45 - Comments have already noted the "Twin Bridges" as it's noted in news/traffic reports here over the Mohawk River. Based on the newspaper comics date stamp at 7:45, those horses could of been heading to Saratoga Race Course. 06:00 - It's quite a different vibe to I-87 (known around here as the Northway) once you clear Lake George Village compared to the first 50 miles from Albany north. And yeah, there's lot of summer camps up in the Adirondacks. 06:22 - Central Essex County, looking towards some of the highest peaks of the Adirondacks (and NYS, too). Not sure if you can see Mount Marcy from there. 7:03 - Butternut Pond and Pok-A-Moonshine Mountain. Seeing this on my trips up to SUNY Plattsburgh used to be the first sign I was about to emerge out of the Adirondacks and back into civilization again. 7:45 - So the gas station you stopped at is on the northern end of the Town of Plattsburgh, near the northernmost of the four ferries that cross Lake Champlain. When I was in college, it used to have an A&W in it. So based on the timing of this video, it's a shame the Adirondack Line wasn't in service (still isn't as of now due to heat restrictions on the Canadian side of the border) so you could get the Lakefront Lake Champlain ride back down to Albany. If you ever do take the Adirondack [and you probably will need to if you are to get NY's least used station], sit on the right side heading northbound, or the left side heading southbound. You won't be disappointed.

Sounds interesting, though its really weird to hear as a Dane how expensive bus tickets in the US are. But I guess we have something similar to Trailways and their lower last minute prices in Denmark. Here in Denmark we for many years have had Flixbus and Kombardo Expressen. Flixbus is... well Flixbus. And Kombardo is a tad more expensive, but takes a very fast shortcut via a ferry that also works as a floating bus terminal allowing transfers between routes for maximum flexibility. But since spring 2023 we've had "Fleet". Fleet when booking in advance is somewhere between Flixbus and Kombardo on price, but when booking last minute, Fleet will be the cheapest by far. Fleet is run by a company named Vikingbus which has like 800 buses around Denmark, so their idea is if they have popular departures, they don't have to worry about selling out, they can just add another bus to the same departure and sell even more tickets at low prices. So say between Copenhagen and Aarhus, the most popular intercity bus route in Denmark around 2pm 2 days in advance, Flixbus is 150kr/$21.55, Kombardo is 160kr/$23, but Fleet is just 120kr/$17.24. So far I've only tried travelling with Flixbus which I did last summer which was alright. Kombardo serves my hometown but the departures on this route are always much more expensive than within Copenhagen. And Fleet is too new for me to have tried it, but I've tried the same buses they use for Fleet on Rail replacement services and they're fine generally.

@@MilesinTransitOther than school buses, it’s hard to think of examples. I guess you rode one Minnesota to Wisconsin, or was that a bridge? Can’t recall. Anyhoo, you missed one transit reference of note - the horses in the van around Saratoga! Or maybe it was a super subtle flavoring to the video.

The parking lot district where the bus terminal is located is just a sea of asphalt that the city is trying to develop. You should check out the plan proposed by Albany Parking Authority’s feasibility study to renovate the greyhound station. The proposal is a 7 story transit center. Pretty cool. Awesome vid as always.

another vote for trailways--went to school in rural upstate ny and the only time they weren't on time was during an actual blizzard! bizarrely enough, they also had a lot of amish customers? sometimes they would pull over and deadass just. stop in the middle of a rural road for an amish customer who (presumably) had made prior arrangements to do so (also plattsburgh is a big college town, so that bus tends to be much more packed during the school year, especially around move in/out and around breaks)

Adirondack Trailways is one of my favorite bus companies! Even if you can get the Greyhound cheaper in advance, it's worth the extra cost IMO. The buses are well appointed and kept clean, most towns of significant size are served by actual proper bus stations, something that is no longer true of Greyhound post-Flix merger sadly, and their services often run on time. The first time I rode an AT bus, even though my bus was 45 minutes late (and I had no idea when it would show up because I was in a small town with no cell phone service), they managed to hold my connecting bus an extra 15 minutes for me (I say me, because I was the only passenger on the first bus) at the bus station in Kingston and we still made it into New York on time!

It's definitely way slower. I only took it once and never again because of how many stops, how it would regularly go sub-35mph or stop for periods of time to let freight move through. Then the border process is probably the worst where you have to stay in your seat and a guard comes to you and interviews you. It took over an hour at the border the last time I took that train.
