ARIE ONE; graffiti on it's own just really peeves me. there's no sense to it, it's ugly, it's often gang related, and it certainly isn't art. the architecture of some very old abandoned buildings is true art, art that gets defaced by dumb thugs with no appreciation for anything. go to the buildings, explore them, photograph them, film them, and then leave them be. that is "good use".

Yeah, some people just gotta destroy. As my moniker indicates, I'm old, nearing 80. I grew up in a little town of less than a thousand, back in the '40s, and we had some graffiti and vandalism then, too. It was ever thus, but I wasn't raised that way. the burning of trash in an old strip mine pit accidently caught an exposed vein of coal on fire unknowingly. the fire traveled into the abandoned coal mine underneath, it spread throughout the mine, and was discovered burning in 1962. It has been ever since, and has caused the town to be vacated, due to fumes that would seep up into residents homes.

Part of Silent Hill was based on items that occurred here. The part which gets considerably worse is the part that was based on the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The history of that place is actually worse than any movie. Back in the time in which it was operating; if one had an enemy they wanted to get rid of - just admit them to that hospital - almost all of them never left. Yet not much has changed with the new replacement of the hospital

Erik Ward Well, the *movie* was *definitely* based on this town; the director himself said so. The fog in the game was mainly to limit the draw distance and allow the game to run at an acceptable frame rate, and just became a feature of Silent Hill. As far as I know, nobody has stepped forward and said that the fog in the game had anything to do with Centralia.

I wonder if that coal-fired furnace in the cellar was fed w/coal from the workings underground that ultimately doomed the town... My WV grandparents on my adoptive father's side had a coal-cellar. Coal-chute outside the house made it easy for fuel-truck to drive up & just dump or shovel coal directly into the chute, which filled the little cellar room. Kept the place warm in the winter, but it's a dirty way to heat a home. Creepy place, gave me nightmares for yrs when I was younger. Entire sections of town were covered in coal-dust from coal-burning households & along routes where the big, uncovered transport vehicles hauled it from mines to storage/processing locations.
@azadalamiq6 жыл бұрын
TheSWolfe nah, the trash burn that set the mine on fire pretty much did it. coal mine fires almost never go out. I forget where but 1 has been burning for 1000 years or so. Pretty much fires light up coal vains in the rock. coal burns very hot, which is why you can see cracks in the roads. I wouldn't be shocked that in 10 years ti,e It will look like silent hill 2 with big holes cutting off roads.

Talk about being a hardcore holdout. The state eventually stopped offering to buy people out and now just forbids anyone new from moving in. I know that some people really love their hometown but when it's abandoned and your're getting old do you really want to spend what is left of your life in a ghost town that is slowly killing you from the coal fire vapors seeping out of the ground and constant threat of sinkholes forming under you?

Another great video, Dan. Went to Centralia for the 1st time yesterday. It was definitely unique to drive around the streets where no homes exist anymore, walk on Graffiti Highway, and see Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary church. Didn't see any smoke at all nor did I smell anything but spray paint from the cans an older gentleman was using to paint a memorial on Graffiti Highway. I honestly believe the government overreacted by forcing the residents to leave atleast the ones who didn't have Carbon Monoxide pouring into their homes which some former residents have claimed was a large percentage. If the fire is still burning as of Nov. 2018, it would have to be deep in the woods where I wasn't venturing.

Something really messed around with the camera when you entered the coal shaft... Buzzing pops ect. are audible. Do you know what was causing the interference? It added to the already spooky ambience. Great work on this Dan. Some lovely clips...

I wonder if former centralians ever think to themselves “I wonder if I left my cheers video back at the old house.” Then they search up videos Ike this to get their answer. Or “I wonder if Ed is gay.” *watches video “DAMMIT!”

When I was little I lived in a small bungalow with 6 small rooms in total and with a coal stove in the second most left room in the house. The coal dust went everywhere when pouring it into the stove and when it was burning the coals (outside the ashtray). Took ages (an hour+) to get heat from it (had to poke that thing for that long), and when it was going, the room it was in was scorching hot, and the rest especially the bathroom and my bedroom at the utter right where so cold they grew ice stars on the windows. No heat whatsoever.

It makes it even eerier that it was filmed during the winter with the weird dark hues and snowfall. It might be pretty cool to see it in the summer when Pennsylvania is beautiful.

You're so close to my university and there's a dying mall not too far from it!!! It's dingy too but has some running fountains still. Hope you're enjoying the Keystone State!

Just saw the PBS docu recently... great video. Just FYI, the coal fire simply keeps the boiler going. Not necessarily a health concern as long as it's properly vented.

I was really surprised by the push-button light switch! Haven't seen one of those since I-don't-know-when. We had a couple in our first house, plus a couple of switches where you turned a knob to turn on the the lights. Both kinds used to make a "Plink!" noise when they worked. And then a coal-fired water heater/furnace in the basement, too! A lot of these abandoned places make me really sad to think of the lives lived in them--maybe happy years... Keep the good stuff coming, Dan!

Rachi poo Someone probably owns them, Centralia isn't completely abandoned, there are still some people who live there despite government warnings.
@SpearM30646 жыл бұрын
Adam Smith Not very many. The official population of the borough is 7, and the government has worked out a deal with them... they will be allowed to live out their lives there.
@marcboulware62426 жыл бұрын
Correct. They will get to live out the remainder of their Lives in Centralia. However... they *CAN'T* pass on their Estate (Home, Land, etc) to an Heir. The Government gets it. Once Centralia, PA 17927 is 100% completely gone, the Government will commence to make a go for the Anthracite Coal which is buried under the Town. That's what they have been after for quite awhile now. It's quite valuable.

The coal is what's burning. I don't know where this "garbage fire burned the town" story came from, all my life growing up here in PA, they said it was a coal fire, and it was probably caused by a lightning strike. The garbage fire thing is relatively new.

That house is pretty recently abandoned... it was occupied last year in November, I think. Windows def weren’t boarded up then, at the very least.

Last person to be evicted was a man named JOHN LOKITIS,he was in a documentary that came out in 2000,and if you Google his name even today,that date will show we he was finally forced out,it was actually very well done,its only 1hr:10min long

that green sculpted carpet is the same stuff i grew up with as a kid in chicago - except ours was burnt orange. years later i revisited my old street just in time to catch the guy who'd bought our house, putting some out by the road; they'd just replaced it. he was kind enough to cut a couple feet's worth off for me: the only piece of my childhood home i own and treasure. thanks, mr. heredia.

URBAN EXPLORER PROTIP: 12:00 When one comes across old newspapers, it is standard procedure to let your audience know the date(s) of said newspapers, rather than just chucking them back down on the floor in a totally disinterested manner.
