I read the title as "What's My Vacation", and I came here thinking I would learn what a priest does with his time off. It was still a great video, but now I feel silly and painfully curious about what Fr. Shmitz does with his free time.

The Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit, if many churches are correct. If many churches are correct, The Trinity is a Family-- two Parents and a Progeny, just like a human family. (Humans are made in the "image" and "likeness" of God according to Genesis 1:26) In the Book of Job which is part of the bible, the Lord is compared to a father and also a mother with a womb. "From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens"--Job 38:29. Because God can also be thought of like a mother (Isaiah 42:14,Isaiah 66:13,Matthew 23:37), all three roles (father, mother, progeny) in a basic human family are filled in the Trinity. Saying that the "Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit" is simply another way of saying that the Holy Spirit "proceeds from the Father and the Son" which has been official Catholic Church teaching for centuries. According to the Catholic Church, the Son is begotten from the Father. If this is true, the Father is the Father (Parent) of the Son. According to the Church, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.If this is true, the Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit. If the Church recognizes Mary as mother(parent) of God even if Mary isn't the first source of Christ's humanity(God is the first source of everything),then the Son can also be rightly called a Parent of God(the Holy Spirit). Of course, the scriptures are vague if the Holy Spirit is the 3rd or 2nd Person of the Trinity--whichever of these is true, the First Person and the Second Person may be the Parents of the Third. Parent- definition 1a from Merriam-Webster dictionary: one that begets or brings forth offspring.

My vocation seems to be praying. I think I have spent 5 or 6 hours praying today - Full Rosary three times, grace before and after meals, Advent wreath prayers, Novena prayers, the prayer network for my parish that was nearly 50 people long, and 2 prayers I get from daily newsletters - one from Paraclete Press and the other “daily liturgical” from Catholic Culture. Plus I subscribe to daily Bible readings from Bishop Barron, and learn catechism from RCIA. I don’t know what it all means yet - I’m in RCIA. I’m grateful for the opportunity to pray. It is right.

@@cavan7243 one day you may care. You may grow to find a life without spirituality of some kind as empty. And the thought of no after life as depressing. Solomon gained wealth fame women he had it all yet became empty and depressed. You can only fill yourself up with the world's pleasures so much until you feel something is lacking within. "harder to be served than to be the one serving ..." that's a nugget of wisdom that, without dismissing the good of the one who's serving, sheds a bit of light onto why it' can be so hard to be dependent, especially totally dependent.

These are the kind of questions and topics I've been pondering lately since a break up: what does God want me to do? What should I be doing day-to-day? What if I'm wasting my time, what if I ignore Him, where is that intersection of overall vocation and shifting vocation for me? This video is a great reflection on that. Mostly, I've been trying to just trust, to open that dialogue with God and let Him love me as I need right now. I know that if I try each day, working toward holiness in whatever ways I feel God pulling me each day, then He appreciates that, He works with that, however imperfectly I do these things. It's really difficult at times to keep my own worries, stress, ideas, and desires at bay, but I try to offer all of that to Him, knowing He offers me Himself, all His Goodness. I don't know why I wrote all of that, but I hope it can be encouragement for anyone else having trouble or discussion for anyone who can use it. God bless y'all, and Lord, keep Fr. Mike close! He really helps us out!

Sooo helpful! So key if you ever wondered if you shouldve been a nun. I just realized that my marriage relationship has brought me closer to Jesus and been the area where I have grown the most in my faith. Thank you Lord for my sweet husband and for whispering to me in this video that I dont need to wonder about this...we are all called to be Saints and I admire saints, and am inspired by them especially nuns. But that doesnt mean I missed my purpose.

I am not Catholic but recently had a dream in which I became Catholic so I wondered if the universe was trying to tell me something. I've since done a lot of research and enquired about a local RCIA programme but it is on a Monday night and I work nightshift every Sunday Monday. Anyway I've put it back to the universe that if this is what they want me to do then they will find a way. Anyway just wanted to say I love watching your videos and find a lot of comfort and inspiration in them. Thank you Father.

Father Mike, I'm a protestant, but I volunteer for a catholic institution. I am a fan of the "all rivers lead to one ocean" idea. What is it that I can, or should do about this predicament? What exactly is the relationship between catholicism, and protestant sects? Is being a christian enough in the eyes of the Church?

this is great! only thing I would change though is that for the many vocations that fall generally into "consecrated single" their primary relationship would be with Christ, like religious. take consecrated virgins for instance, who definitely do not identify as single, they are very specifically called "brides of Christ" by the Church in their rite of consecration, and the many others I know who have taken private vows feel called to this relationship with Christ too. anyway, so this category of "consecrated single" is very very broad, but I think overall you could say they are called to this same primary relationship with Christ as religious, just lived out in a different way, outside a religious community

Hello Father Mike. This is Maria Krier. I am a Catholic Christian. I enjoy watching your videos. You are such an inspiration. I recently read the Denver Catholic Register and read an article about a woman who lived in the eighteen hundreds and might become a saint. Her name is Julia Greeley. She was an african american woman who was an ex-slave. She was a nanny for a wealthy family that had children. Julia Greeley was Catholic. Julia Greeley was also a lay person in the church. She wasn't a nun, and she wasn't married. So I guess my question is, "Did Julia Greeley have a vocation?" I mean she died when she was 80 years old and all the money she earned she gave to the poor. So I'm confused. Can a lay person become a saint?

At the end of the day your vocation is what you want! Yes! You don’t hear that much do you?! It’s what you most deeply want! It’s not so much about your abilities or what other people tell you that you are a good fit for. It’s about what you want! Look at it this way! Not every gorgeous woman wants to be a model. Not every 6’8 tall guy wants to be a basketball player. Not everybody who’s good with money wants to be an accountant. Not everybody who loves animals wants to be a vet. Not everybody who knows all about fitness wants to be a trainer. And that’s all ok. It’s about what you want “the most”. It’s your dream!

Thanks Fr. Mike. I'm Protestant, so I have no desire to be a priest. But wasn't I supposed to ask God whether He wanted me to be (in my case) a science teacher? Shouldn't I invite Him to guide me to my next job? Should we ask Him what career/job to pick even if we ruled out the priesthood? And what if I have trouble clearly, directly hearing from God regarding my career or job?

Would you consider sometime doing a talk about vocations for people who tried and failed? I'll try to keep this concise. After a long time I have come to the conclusion that I was mistaken about my desire for the priesthood which included about six initial interviews with diocesan and religious orders and being sent home twice from the two orders that accepted me. I was mistaken for a reason I didn't want to admit to myself. When I was in middle school I was sexually abused by a classmate. This was long before help was available to many victims of sexual violence. My family, who I relied on way too much for emotional support, had then and have today no confidence in counselors and believe they undermine parental authority and give an excuse to the lazy and immature. ( Little bit of German cultural outlook goes a long, long way.) Without realizing it consciously I had thought that if I entered religious life Christ would miraculously hit me with his love like a spiritual transporter beam (this was after Star Trek's first television series) and fix me right up. It took me a long while to realize that this is not and never was the way Christ heals. I overlooked the fact that after living with Christ for three years, Peter when confronted with the accusation, "you were with that man" collapsed like a house of cards and the others ran away. I'll spare you the details about my case. Sufficient for the moment is my telling you that today I go to mass on Sundays, holy days and some weekdays. I pray the rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy without regularity. I hope and will try to improve my observance.. I regret my obtuseness but not the improvement in my spiritual life. You may want to review this mess before posting it

Hello Father Mike. This is Maria Krier. You are awesome!! I'm not sure what my vocation is. I knew a priest, he is now in heaven, his name was Father Warren Seedorf and he had a sister named May. May was deaf. Father Warren took care of his deaf sister when she was alive. May went to heaven. My parents want me to help my disabled brother named Jonathan. He has a speech impediment. So I don't think that I could become a religious, or get married. Should I just devote my life to helping my older brother?

Fr. Mike Schmitz I double dare you to take on and discuss a situation I NEVER hear priests talk about. That is the situation for those who have 1. discerned marriage is their calling 2. waited to be married in their 30s or 40s for their first marriage (they are not widows or divorcees) and 3. have done a fair amount of dating. ( meet ups, catholic singles. online dating, etc.) What say you? Inspired minds and hearts want to know :-)

AnaMaria Herrera because maybe they expect to marry with attraction where you're not necesarily supposed to have attraction. Marriage is a penance.
