The rest of the face has to be well done. Especially for reds and pinks, you can't have similar discoloration, acne, or redness except blush. For black, blue, and purple lips, there needs to be no dark circles or sallowness or else it'll draw attention to it and make you look sick. Bright colors will draw attention to an area so if you have features you don't like in that area (nose, lips, chin) it's just gonna draw attention to that. Also, the rest of the makeup, outfit, hair, etc should be in a matching intensity without being conflicting, otherwise it washes everything out. You need to make the bold lip look very intentional and cohesive with the look you're portraying
