I'm a mental health proffesional. This is exactly what we need to talk about. We needed to start this conversation YEARS ago, so thank you! For myself, ive come a long way from this "collecting" (which essentially is hoarding and bingeing behavior), touchwood!!! At least two times since 2016 ive myself been swept up in this eyeshadow palette madness storm trying to buy and buy due to the "ooh shiny 🤩🤩..." reflex in the brain and the fomo too. Always chasing a fantasy of who I'll be when ill wear these. But when i understood my pattern, i could finally rationalize the process and stop myself from impluse buying. First pattern was constantly looking at the YT content of new releases, advent calendars and declutters. Its an endless cycle and affects the mind, changing your desires and even lingo. This third time around, I'm proud that even after looking at multiple channels doing the same thing over and over again and even after finding interesting items, i was able to not buy anything through black friday. (I'm also unsubscribed to any beauty influencer, all i see and hear is materialism and unnecessary drama.) Second pattern was, telling myself that products need to be "replaced" coz of new texture/colour trends. Tbh, you'll never be able to keep up, in fact, trends always circle around. Also, understanding that even the most beautiful, holo new glittery shadow is not a staple used item for most ppl. Getting endless palettes of those is pointless, coz of limited practical use (a normal job life and only two eyeballs to be using all that shadow) and a waste of money. Third pattern was getting excited to talk about it to friends, who obviously were interested in other things too, so feeling alone with this topic obsession. You start becoming a weird, boring version of yourself. No growth. And the answer is NOT to search for new friends to fuel this behaviour, it is to correct yourself as an adult. Fourth pattern was, chasing a fantasy of a better me after using things, drawing a parallel to good looking influencers. I had to tell myself that working on myself to become a permanently better version of myself without relying on physical things is way better. Spending on music classes or making art or reading or serving your talents/gifts is way, way better. The fifth was repressing my gut instinct and knowledge that I can dupe most looks by stuff i alreay have. By constantly not listening to this feeling, i wasted time, money and mindspace. I'm happily decluttering most things in my life now, to live simply and have control over my growth, my finances and mentality. Trust me, the media is absolutely batshit crazy in ruining your mental health and humanity. Self-help is the best help.

Brands and influencers are selling us a fantasy, a dream lifestyle. For example I love shimmery shadows. They look pretty, feminine and glamorous. Perfect product for someone who goes out a lot, goes to glamorous events, someone who works in front of a camera or vacations a lot and gets dolled up all the time. Let me tell you, I do non of these things. Although I love shimmer, in my everyday life there are not really occasions where a high impact eyelook would make sense. So I never wear mine and refuse to hoard more and put my money into a drawer, invest it into something that goes off eventually. I basically bought what I have for my fantasy self. The fantasy self concept was eye opening for sure.

I love them too. I got rid of them when I realized it’s just my attraction to organized colors. When I need a boost now I go to an art or fabric or yarn or bead store and just spend some time among the organized color displays enjoying the visual potential, sorted selection, and remember I have some paints. I wear makeup maybe once or twice a year generally, but less and less often all the time. Now all the makeup fits in a small portion of a small bathroom drawer. It’s far more appropriate. The eye shadow was just reminding me of painting, which I actually enjoy. The color is attractive, but when it’s on my face I can’t see it and don’t enjoy it anymore. Better to paint on paper.

I really appreciate how you've mentioned the use of the word "try"! I've noticed that people use it so often in a context of buying a thing to "try it out". Like we forget that we have stores full of testers that exist for the purpose of trying the products out. (And yes I know that not everybody has access to stores, some people have to shop online, but I think it's safe to assume that most people have a possibility to go to a store every now and again to look at most of these items in real life instead of having to order them without trying it out in advance).
@soul-live-ingАй бұрын
Exactly! That was how I was triggered and figured out how problematic that word is to our consumerism culture.. thanks for your comment 🧡
@pryak6581Ай бұрын
Influencers have normalized trying new releases all the time. "Trying" for an influencer doesn't equal buying, because they get sent pr. But what it does equal is additional income, because they make more money than they spent through affiliate links, sponsorships + they get perks like brand trips, own product releases. For a normal person trying means spending a good sum of their hard earned money on something they may not get use out of before it expires. Two very different scenarios.
@soul-live-ingАй бұрын
It’s amazing you are aware of all of this, the more awareness we have towards this, the less problematic it could become. Thank you for sharing ❤️🔥

I figured out a while back that what I think is beautiful is not what I will wear. Also after several palettes going bad and throwing them out I became so irritated by that process that I just buy a palette and use it until the shades I reasonably use are gone. If I have a few shades that are untouched, I keep that in mind when buying my next palette. No one notices when I change palettes because browns just look brown to most people.
@MZB80Ай бұрын
"What I think is beautiful is not what I will wear" is such a truth bomb! I love big, bold Cartier sculptural jewellery - but I'd never actually wear it in my life, so even buying a replica would be a complete waste of resources! Accepting that what we're attracted to & what actually works for us may not be the same is the key.
@21cormorantsАй бұрын
I just started the video, and this is thankfully an addiction I nipped in the bud several years ago, but it occurred to me whilst you were showing your various palettes and reading through the comments that there’s something additional that I think might have played into the makeup addiction in the earlier days of KZbin and social media, and has taken us to where we are today. Some of the earliest “influencers” who had dozens of palettes and were uploading tutorials showing off their collection were those who *already* had many palettes: professional make up artists. And soon it was aspiring makeup artists. The kinds of people for whom it would make sense to have such a vast array of shades. And, of course, they would be the earliest to be sent new palettes to “try” for their viewers. It makes sense for a professional to have so many, but we’ve largely forgotten that that is likely where the normalization of owning huge numbers of makeup palettes began. We’re not all professionals going to various jobs (weddings, photoshoots, high fashion events, galas, music videos, TV shows) with various clients. We accepted it as a “normal amount” for “a normal person,” when in fact it was a professional’s toolbox (soon supplemented by sponsorships). And as Influencing took off as a genre and career, it became normalized for the sake of consumerism. But what is realistic for a simple normal everyday person? We’ve lost touch of that. But FOMO is real, the gemstone-like presentation is tempting, the excitement is inflated by social media. It’s tough to walk away from it, especially when we start building “a culture” around it.

I want to add that it’s important to learn how to use our makeup tools, including our fingers, properly. Because then we’re able to get the variety of looks/textures/whatever we’re craving. Or least I’m craving. Also I want to add if you have hooded eyes you will need the proper shaped brushes for them. I noticed my desire for new eyeshadows reduced when I was able to use the collection I already have.

Such wise words, I also have realised that most of the colours I like, and actually wear..are already in my collection. Sure, I love watching influencers slap on vibrant electric blue, hot red, flaming orange, with glitters and sparkles... but will I ever WEAR them myself!?? No! Never... no matter how glorious I think the colours are!!!

This is a great video and I especially like what you said in the end of the video about trying vs owning. I have been for a while in a journey to own less makeup and finally I have gotten to a point where I'm comfortable with my collection. It's not the most minimal ever, but it's also not a huge hoard of different options that I never wear. Also I had to learn the hard way this fall that eyeshadow expires, since I got a reaction using super old eyeshadows. I think that experience will also keep me in check in future, when purchansing new makeup.

I’ve personally unsubscribed from many fashion and beauty and skincare influencers. I destroyed my skin microbiome with the “10 step gentle Korean routine “ and I spent a year with constant visits to my dermatologist to fix it. She literally told me :cleanser, sunscreen. And if I feel my skin is too tight , moisturizer. I gave up tretinoin too. My skin feels and looks amazing now. As for the makeup, do you think anyone notices the difference if we use this or that similar eyeshadow? And in my experience, bronzer looks so much better as an eyeshadow than a regular eyeshadow.
@akemi_kАй бұрын
I relate to so much of what you said. I don't have much interest in any makeup product EXCEPT for colorful eyeshadow palettes, and this video came in clutch. As someone who also draws, the part where you mentioned about the artistic part of owning an eyeshadow palette is so true - it (likely) brings the same satisfaction as owning a set of new color pencils or new watercolors (which is something I've been sucessful with avoiding, but with eyeshadow palettes though...) And the Trying vs Owning ressonated with me as well. I know it all ties in together, the trends, vibes and how the marketing works, but there's nothing more disappointing than seeing people (influencers or friends/colleagues) recommending a certain product and, when you try it, it's just not for you. The texture, the brand or the color isn't your style or something you want to use frequently, but just the feeling of being included in a trend among your peers makes you feel good about owning a product, despite the fact you probably won't use much of it. I absolutely loved this video and just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I hope to see more of your content!

Hi, I feel as though you not only described explained and synthesized my entire relationship with eyeshadows, but more clearly explained my personal process of overcoming my eyeshadow addiction. I want to add that my addiction to eyeshadows and make up in general began because I became an adult and gained access to lots of money without having bills to pay(I lived at home during the pandemic) so I finally decided that I could get the things my parents would/could never buy me. As a first gen immigrant, I rarely had the luxury of my parents buying something non practical as money was short. And if we I did get something, I was always expected to share. I felt like my makeup addiction was fueled by the fact that I felt like I could finally make it up to childhood me. The problem with that thinking is that sometimes being denied things, especially if you’re not in the financial position to buy it without consequences, is okay and can make you more creative with what you already have. After decluttering almost 3 years worth of make up hoarding, I not only realized I have have an aesthetic I rarely deviate from, but I can do exactly what I wanted to do with only a cupful of products, foundation and primer included. Your video is very well produced and insightful. Thank you and wishing all the luck 🍀 ❤.

I have a total of 123 pans in singles and palettes, excluding cream shadow sticks. I keep a photographic collection to keep me focused on the variety that does meet my needs. The too faced palette is very appealing but reviews consistently point to poor quality shimmers. People do enjoy the mattes but I always put shimmer on my lids and the whole appeal of the palette is the matching duos so I have let it go. The ABH Sugar and Spice also caught my eye but again because it’s something that I like so is already present in my collection in other palettes. I did buy a palette this season because it was not represented in my collection and I really wanted what it offered this festive season.

Questions that help me by less eyeshadow: Does it fit my color preferences? Whether color analysis or favorites, I know that I will use colors that look good on me and work with my wardrobe and will rarely use colors that don't. Does it work with the way I actually use makeup? I never use more than one palette at a time. If a palette doesn't have several light shadows and at least one dark matte, it's not going to get used because I'd have to open another eyeshadow to finish my look. It may be silly, but it is the reality of how I use makeup. Same thing with single eyeshadows. I will only use a single if it's a light shimmer I can use as a one and done (because I'm only pulling out one shadow item). I've disqualified a lot of palettes because they didn't meet this requirement. I use an app called Pixlr to create a collage which has the palette I'm interested in along with all the other palettes I have with a similar color story. Then I ask, "How many colors in the new palette are different enough from the old palette that I'd actually be able to tell the difference on my eye?" It's pretty hard for an eyeshadow to make it through all 3 questions.

Idk why this was recommended to me as I hate eyeshadow 😂 I just think it looks terrible on me and I never learned to apply it properly. But.... I was able to stop myself from buying lip palettes and too many glosses and lipsticks by testing colors on myself. I realised only the warm bright colors looked really good (like brightened up my skin and not bringing out redness and flaws), so I could just forget about the rest. I started looking at seasonal color analysis after a friend mentioned it and figured out my lipstick testing was basically figuring out my "season" on my own. I started watching Carol Brailey videos and got totally convinced by her before and afters. It ended up being easy to figure out I was a "True Spring" so I totally changed my wardrobe, selling old clothes and buying used clothes in "my colors" on Vinted. Now I love seeing myself in these colors that effortlessly look so much better. And I never bother buying makeup that isn't in my color palette. I see it saving a lot of time and money over the long term because I can block out so much that is no longer relevant to me. I don't need every color, shade, tone, etc - I just need a handful of my best colors in good formulas.

I'm a sucker for eyeshadow palettes 😅For me, each of the palettes is not just a set of eye makeup products. It is a mood, inspiration, the author's message, the brand's philosophy, the narrative that stands behind each of them. I think a lot of people have similar feeling to perfumes. Yes sounds a bit silly, but still. For instance, Pat MacGrath is a holiday palette for me. When you want to feel vibes of the red carpet or some fashion editorial shoot. Tom Ford gives me "power woman" vibes, I use only those when I have an important meeting. Viseart has a solid office lady vibes, Huda Beauty is more of a girl-night-out for me. However, I'm still quite consciousness about my purchases and try not to buy overlapping color stories. But full catalog of all my eyeshadows wouldn't serve me much because if I look at it and realize that to make the look I want I need to pull 5 palettes same time - it will turn me off. Using one-two palettes for a complete look is more practical for me and less unnecessary overthinking where exactly that shadow from the album is.

Thank you, I swatched the shadow onto a clear tape, then I stick the tape on a paper for the shades to pop, like if you have lots of light shades, use a piece of black paper. You can even use a TRANSPARENT plastic sheet, so when you lay the swatch card on your skin, you can see how it looks like as it’s been swatched to your arm. the tape works wonders at capturing the shimmers in the shadow.. and I logged every shade in excel.. so I know what the swatch is referred to.

Great video ! It happened to pop on my feed one week after I spent hours trying to make a comprehensive color chart of all my matte eyeshadows 😅 So I definitely share the feeling of this being an eye-opening experience ! Even though I generally try to be careful with my purchases, when it comes to makeup my feelings are complicated by the fact I've only recently really started having fun with makeup. I grew up feeling insecure about not being pretty enough and convincing myself I just wasn't a "makeup girl". But now that I can buy my own products, I realize how nice it is to explore my own style, have fun with it, to feel pretty, and it's like I finally "belong". On the other hand, it feels exhausting to be bombarded with new releases all the time, and having to fact-check whether I actually need them or not. At least now that I have my organized eyeshadow color chart, I can see clearly I don't need that tempting Natasha Denona Roxa palette, because I do have enough purple pink shadows already !

I pretty much only follow like 1 brand that I love and it an indie brand with great customer service so I don't feel money wasted. of course I now own most of their eyeshadow but they only really release new palettes once a year so it manageable

That’s quite a good way to balance it.

Funny fact... I wear colorful eyeshadow everyday for at least 7 years. I still have not completely panned my fist colour pallete and i have 7 in total, most of them medium to small size. I have only panned one other pallete throughout all this time and take into consideration i use eyeshadow as blush, mixed with a medium as liner and sometimes as highlighter. It lasts for ages ..... Why get a million brown shadows????🤷🤷 Liquid lipsticks on the other hand... I go through them like crazy 😅

Oh girl, you got me thinking… I totally understand how you are feeling, there is no right or wrong with this.. I think it’s about you making a informed decision that gives you contentment weather you get it or not. were you able to see this palette in person? Or you are wanting it based on reviews online? I once wanted the Natasha retro glam palette, but I did a great thing going to store and swatch it in person. That totally took it off my mind completely😂 like easy Sometimes Online = FANTASY 🧡

I'm here to tempt you 😄 I have that palette and it's one of my favs. I have hooded eyes and that's why I like to put shiny shimmers in the middle of mobile lid to make it pop more. So I use DM V on top of my regular eyeshadows (mattes or satins) to get that extra shine in my look. But ofc before making a purchase, you should consider your eye makeup style and what you already have in your collection.

@@victoredwardo9485 It doesn't have much of douchromes, but shimmer are really nice and have variety of colors and opacity.

I know this is a bit counterintutive to the whole point of your video, but what is the palette in the very bottom right corner of the thumbnail? I only have 2 neutral palettes and have been keeping an eye out for a nice colorful palette to play with, and honestly part of the reason I clicked on the video was to find out what palette it is. Also, is it any good in your opinion?

I believe you are looking at the Huda beauty mercury palette. I don’t think it’s available anymore. A lot of those colours form this palette are topper shades. It’s is a fun palette as a addition. But it’s not practical on its own. - my opinion

I actually have a 3 set eyeshadow with a blush, contour, and highlight palette in it that I used all the time. I feel like this marketing strategy is not just with make up, it's also with art and cooking too. "Oh if I have an Air fryer life would be so much easier." "I need a high quality branded color pencil otherwise I can't draw." I would suggest you learn different eye shadow technics instead of buying more because you'll be surprise at how doing your makeup wrong can make you look worse. By the way I'm Chinese with Monolids and as much as the beauty industry wants me to belive I need double eyelid sugery to be pretty I can replicate western makeup on my eyes and they look so much more beautiful now. As the saying goes, All the Makeup in the World won't make you less insecure. I gotten rid of a lot of my make up now that I know what suits me and what doesn't. Feel comfortable in your own skin because no matter how you look you will always be you.

Oh i had an all in one type palette too for _years_ ! I feel like i jse makeup a bit more than the average person around me but the fact that i didnt even hit pan in all the blushes after six years says a lot. I had to throw it out bcs of mold :,) so mich product went to waste.
