There is no mechanism to hold them accountable.West Africa has a history of choosing their heads of state poorly. It is nonsensical for any one to condemn the three coups in Niger, Mali and Guinea when we all remained quiet to see the presidents of those nations changed the two terms of their presidency to three terms. As long as we allowed their constitutions to be massaged by those autocrats to extend their rules, the coups to overthrow them are justifiable. Anyone who don't want to see a coup must first condemn the manipulation of constitutions. ECOWAS, AU and UN should be serious to disallow the changing of constitution by any sitting president that involves his own terms of office. The practice must be abolished and never entertained.

If Africa can produce leaders with the same leadership skills, and mindset of JJ Rawlings of Ghana, Africa will never have leadership setbacks. Rawlings knew how a government should work. He made sure that leaders must be accountable to the people. He never gave the West the chance to dictate Ghana's internal affairs. Fearless and resilient he made sure that Ghana's mineral resources were not exploited by the West, but well managed and profitable only on mutual terms between Ghana and multinational corporations. He applied the principle of Checks and Balances in government. Rawlings was a military man with exceptional political and economic intelligence. He was not a ruler, he was a quality leader. When Rawlings left office he was the only African leader who walked the streets of Ghana freely and safely, and traveled all over world without bodyguards/security details. He was a great man.

The situation in Guinea brings to focus Democracy vs Term limits? In Israel and Germany the leaders stay in power for a very long time but no one screams about term limits. Are coups the answer? @naurasal91653 жыл бұрын

@apolokaggwa76193 жыл бұрын
You may ask, what is the way forward from this endless pattern of military takeovers in Africa? The answer is quite obvious and not complicated at all. When autocracy, dictatorship and totalitarianism are no longer a way of life, that is the best way to stop a military coup from happening in Africa. That is the answer. When a politician is elected to lead, what has happened too often in Africa since independence is that instead of observing the 8 principles of GOOD GOVERNANCE, one becomes autocratic, intransigent and unaccountable to the people, subverting everything, thereby becoming a tyrant. Am I surprised that the African Union ( AU ) and the Economic Community of the West African States ( ECOWAS ) are now condemning this coup? Not at all. My response to their reaction is to ask them one question: Where were they when the human rights of the people of Guinea were being trampled by this autocrat? Now that the military has acted on their behalf, why should I listen to what the AU and the ECOWAS have to say? Today, there are still a number of dictatorial regimes in Africa, ripe for a military takeover as undesirable as it is, yet the AU has done nothing about them. On my list was Zimbabwe and Zambia in the southern Africa, but those two cases have been resolved for the time being. Everybody knows what happened in Libya, Sudan and Egypt not too long ago and why. Most recently it was South Africa and the aftermath in the news. The most likely case to follow the pattern would be in my native Uganda, where an intransigent dictator has entrenched himself in power for 35 years and counting , even after he had been dismissed by the electorate early this year and on and on it goes. Therefore, when these autocrats are kicked out of office and sent packing, no one should be sorry for them. Most disturbing is that only South Africa recently has had the courage to do what should be done about them, as a deterrent to any would be autocrat. By failing to punish them, we in Africa are condoning their despicable behaviour and therefore guaranteeing that others like them will inevitably arise from among us in the future.
