As someone who lives in the U.S., I say the people of a sovereign nation must decide for themselves their best route. If they want a military dictatorship or a democracy, then it’s up to them to fight for their style of government or the leader they want, and for us to stay out of it. Libya had a pretty bloodless coup, and we intervened, got rid of Gaddafi, and now look at Libya.

I'm guessing French companies could do a better job at ensuring public development accompanies resource extraction/processing, but your expectations related to Uranium contracts are fanciful. Such enterprises require large investments & skilled labor. China & Russia are notoriously exploitative, encouraging corruption & tyrannical leaders, but they are efficient with nefarious propaganda. Africa has to do their part also, demand better government, increase education, decrease crime, & cultivate a productivity culture.

@assertivekarma1909 I like the idea for Africa to do its part. Are you familiar with the treaty of 11 points imposed by France in exchange for independence? It is worse than exploitation. It is rape. I am not pretending that China or Russia is better, but African youth is trapped between a rock and a hard place. Francophone countries are the poorest in the world. France controle s prints, and rations their money since 1945. Call me crazy but it looks like France failed, so they should look for another partner. Any other partner will be better. These countries can only sell, buy, or invest if France approves it. Now I have a question for you, knowing that West Africa is your lifeline would you let it go?

@@ahmadlawal1345 you hit the nail on the head. Also, the west is not a proponent of democracy. Rather it promotes whatever promotes its interests. Al Jazeera is run by Qatar which is a monarchy. You don’t hear them talk about democracy in the gulf states do you? And since they’re a pal of the US, the thuggish westerners never call for democracy in Qatar. We should stop all the hypocrisy and abandon western bad habits.

Democracy is the ideal form of government in almost any situation, for the people governed and usually for the neighbours also... But some countries don't have the cohesion & functionality necessary, whereby nation-States might need to be more clearly delineated, borders reformed into coherent parameters. Constitutions & protections for minorities are an also an important consideration.

As an outsider looking in from the US, I hope the new leaders VERY FIRST order of business is force AND charge the big oil companies drilling off the Coast of the Delta and to clean up the pollution the last government let them get away with for too long. Secondly, for all oil companies drilling off the coast, 65% of their employees must be Niger citizens
