This latest coaching search fumble by the Lakers brass shows yet again that they are rarely all the way IN when targeting a BIG FISH head coach candidate since Jeanie Buss took over the ownership. A "compelling offer" isn't enough when you are trying to convince a guy like Hurley to leave that heavenly situation he's got in UConn, fresh of winning back-2-back NCAA titles with all that control he's got there. It goes beyond the monetary aspects of the offer.
@dindjarin90632 ай бұрын
He wasn’t coming anyway. His wife wasn’t having it regardless of the money. This was just to get more money from UCONN. He was never going to be the coach of Lakers. Ever.
@dadliboi2 ай бұрын
Simply put, it needed to be a "Godfather-level" offer, and it just wasn't that. They also needed to, at a minimum, clear the Monte Williams threshold, IMHO. They fell short there as well. Had the Lakers met these two conditions and still got turned down, I believe there would be more of a "at least they tried" concensus. Unfortunately, they failed. There's no getting around it.
@vesnam1162 ай бұрын
I'm actually glad this thing with Hurley didn't work out, I don't think it would have ended well. NOT with Bron as haters would like to believe, Bron has a crazy work ethic and would have been good. But most of the guys would have struggled and if Hurley would have come hard on them (and he certainly would as you don't get to change your character traits overnight) there would have been a trouble. I believe he would have lost the locker room, for different reasons than Darvin Ham, but would still have lost it. Another thing, a success in the college basketball doesn't translate just like that into the NBA and it would take Hurley a long time to have a real success, if ever. I think it was a veeery bad idea and on top of it they went publicly with it before sealing the deal, which is now embarrassing and it was totally unnecessary. I hope they go with JJ Redick now. It is a risk, but at least Redick has a chance to be a great coach. For all the other candidates we KNOW from their previous experience they don't stand that chance at all. I don't understand people who would rather take a proven bad record (or at least not good enough) than take a risk. As for being a second choice, if I was that I would just say I'm fine with that, I'll prove in the upcoming period I should have been the first one and that's it. There should not be a big problem about that.
@dindjarin90632 ай бұрын
Finally someone with some sense. Yeah, I don’t think Dan would have translated well to the NBA. Usually whatever team he joins has a losing record the first 1 or 2 seasons. LA is known for being impatient and the fanbase would be all over him. And yes, definitely would have came down hard on players and these sensitive NBA players would not have taken it well like they used to in the past. He would have lost the locker room. There is a reason you don’t see coaches yelling and screaming Bobby Knight style. Maybe Pop but that’s about it.

Additionally, Dan Hurley was not ready to transition to the NBA for whatever reasons. Personally, it’s not all about the 6/70 million. He could have taken the deal to be the Lakers’ head coach now and signed an extension based on his performance.
@tejagundala18262 ай бұрын
Hurley never wanted the job, it was a good negotiating chip to have as he finalizes his contract with #UCONN. #Lakers and #Lebron want JJ Redick, and it is certainly convenient to entertain Hurley to make it seem that there was an exhaustive coaching search. #Woj also benefits from once again breaking news. It’s a Win Win.
@ThunderPhant2 ай бұрын
I'd argue the other way around in terms of money - IK most people see the difference and think - wow 50M vs. 70M is a huge difference. But there are countless people who view that as - I'm set for life either way. I mean you can retire of just like 2-4 million EASILY and still live a very nice lifestyle. Who's to say Hurley isn't just really happy with his situation at UCONN and wants to go for the threepeat. Plus, it's not like the Lakers just is the best coaching job in the NBA considering how terrible our front office / ownership has been with a lot of their decision making for a while now. If I was Hurley I'd do the same thing.
@abe88242 ай бұрын
kinda feels like he lakers are keeping their coach search under wraps the whole time, especially with Hurley and will continue until they make a decision, so i doubt Jovan has a secret person telling him stuff. makes no sense that the lakers saw Hurley who just won 2 Championships and think "yea it'll be easy", they 100% have a plan b. Vogel was a plan B and he worked out and dude PLEASE let go of the "lakers missed out on Ty Lue in 2019 and botched the process". he is not a good coach at all, Vogel was the best option
@greggyamisial19142 ай бұрын
And they didn't miss out. They won a Championship. Lue missed out.
@antoniorossiz2 ай бұрын
It's inexcusable for them to create a situation that tarnishes their reputation and sabotages whoever the next coach is. Like, why?? Their reputation already wasn't good and they just made it worse. How do you operate in a way that allows this to happen? The scary part is that whoever is behind this mess is still steering the ship. It gives me no confidence in what they do next. Btw in terms of years, I think 6 years 100 would've been a Godfather offer - not the Irwin/Fanta reported 8 years 100. UK already offered him 11 per and he turned it down, so I don't get why they'd think anything close to that would be enough. 6 years 100 is a lot but it's basically Rui Hachimura salary, which I think is worth it if you think he's *the* guy.

JJ has no coaching experience (collegiate or professional). I like JJ and I tune into his podcasts regularly, but it’s just funny that everyone thought JJ was going to get the job when reports have mentioned he hasn’t even been brought in for a formal interview. You don’t wait 4 weeks to get “the guy” if it’s JJ. I wouldn’t be surprised if they continue to explore other options tbh. No offense to JJ.

There are too many voices/agendas in the FO who are not qualified to be there. Dr Buss would never offer coach K 8m and then 20 years later offer Hurley 11m and expect he'd take it. Hiring Hurley was a fresh idea that didn't fit the Lakers MO so something does smell fishy. And I'd be happy to take half of Consultant "K's" fee to recommend Hurley for a low ball offer that he'd never accept. And get rid of the Rambii!

It's upsetting forget him deciding to stay in uconn. The media and everyone clowning us and saying it's a circus. All the work we did the past 2 seasons of looking well run and being respectable essentially out the window. Ngl you gotta wonder if you decide to let Bron walk and consider trading AD at this point and just starting fresh because what the Lakers want the next coach to be able to do doesn't align with Lebron and AD on roster. As for coaches I'm heavily pursuing guys like David Adelman and Chris Quinn and giving them a 6-8 year offer if we decide on picking them. Want the next coach to lead us into the new era and also be someone that can develop players and have a great system doing so which both of those guys mentioned have. I'd also look into other top tier college coaches.
