Just did that research. A lot of reading. Ended up buying the SPL PQ two weeks ago. It’s now my main mix bus mastering level EQ. The SPL 120V technology is very compelling for a lot of headroom. It’s very smooth, the sound I have in my head is easy to dial in, and it has a vibe that is subtle yet sparkles.

Back in 2010-2012 I really wanted to make a living in music, especially in mixing after learning the basics of it. Well, fast forward to present day and I'm a teacher and I have a home studio that I rarely get to use for recording artists. I'm not making a living in music and I just had my first paid gig last year hah I really want record more musicians here but being a teacher pays the bills. Good thing is that I will finally have the time to go back to doing exercise, making music and just continue recording my songs.

All the best Colt for '24. My aim as a old man hobbyist is recreate the 'sounds' of at least six of my favourite 60s and 70s music. Not note for note, but the sounds of the songs, using the originals as references - eg CCR, Beatles, Beach Boys soundscapes for various songs. I've got plugins from UA, Waves, Slate, etc as well as some outboard hardware. It's good to have goals, but you need success criteria too - "I know goal #3 will be achieved by xyz actions" - eg saving money for one, as you said. I run the risk of looking like an idiot commenting before watching the video cause you'll likely mention it but I feel the need to say I can not wait to see the Atmos rig finished and some videos on that. I was inheritly against the push for it, but after messing around with it myself (just with headphones) watching more of your videos about it, and some back and forth in the comments with you I'm fully invested in the movement. Personally, I think Atmos technology is neat, but I don't see it taking off - similar to what 3D was. Atmos has a higher ceiling in film/broadcast but not in music. What are your thoughts on what you believe is Atmos' potential?

Last year was terrible for me as a freelance audio engineer, I had to close one of my studios and part ways from my partner on my 3 year anniversary of being an audio engineer ( guy wanted to give up pursuing music ) I wasn’t recording much, I had moved city which means I’m starting from ground zero again 😢 after networking crazy in my city, so moving to a new city also meant moving my studio my 2022 year was 55% better financially compared to to my 2023 studio wise huge loss but you know what I never gave up, I’m still pushing, I’m becoming more proficient on many daws, honing my craft, learning from my mistakes, they say only through failure one will learn and I felt like 2023 taught so much of that, so if your pursuing music, keep chasing and thank you colt ❤ you inspire me so much and look forward to collaborating with you someday 😊

I’m a big fan of all the SPL stuff, they are amazingly good. I’ve got the MK2 and bought it just to try it. At first I got to get used to it but now I really like it a lot. Bought the plugin of the PQ and the Iron, they are just amazing. I would love to try the 120V pre-amps 😊

I love the SPL Vitalizer plugin. Still use it till this day. Curious if they make a plugin version of the 3. Also on the topic of plugin compressors if you haven't already you should demo the Kush Audio AR-1. To me that sounds like a outboard compressor and feels like one. Been ITB with vocals ever since.

I have the bigger 2U Gold Tube Vitalizer and the Mk2 gold single rack unit both are great. I'm curious to hear the new one since exciters get overlooked now days when they are a great tool for tracking and mixing!! Also it looks way better in Modern black compared to 1993 gold!

Try the Michelangelo by tone projects and Sontec 432 by Make believe studios before spending serious cash on a mastering EQ. These are miles and miles beyond the regular plugin alliance or waves or fabfilter stuff. Chris Gehringer from Sterling Sound uses only the Sontec plugin even if he has the real 15k$ unit sitting in his rack. And the Michelangelo plugin, I never heard anything digital that captured the soul of tube saturation like this one, it is shocking (Models the mastering EQ HendyAmps Michelangelo).

Atmos is largely a stereo stem based mixing form. So arguably there will be even more stereo processing in Atmos then there is in stereo.

Being that you’re leaning towards the ATMOS setup, how can you justify investing into stereo processors vs processors that allow you to do dual mono? Seems like stereo units will pigeon hole your workflow options

Atmos is largely a stereo stem workflow. So there will be potentially even more stereo processing done in Atmos than I do in stereo.

Stereo is already fairly immersive so it’s overwhelming to factor in how atmos can be controlled in a creative way

Like any engineer starting off, it’s either “I want all the gear” or “plugins is the way to go”. But it’s all about the end goal. And I was told that if you really want to try out the hardware, rent it or ask a friend to borrow and see if it will really improve your mixes. The main thing is future proofing yourself cause the last thing you want is a piece of gear to start collecting dust. I totally agree on the compressors. It’s not the same in plugins. And I don’t think it will ever will be no matter how good they get. Test run the relationship before making the commitment. Cause it’s engineering on one side and it’s a long term business investment on the other.
