Sometimes I use the same kicks on different samples and they sound completely different depending on how much low end, energy etc is in the sample. I have one beat where the kick sounds super sharp and punchy but another one where the kick sounds way quieter and smoother but the processing is pretty much the same on both projects.
@mpchead11 күн бұрын

Excellent tip!! May have to try that should I get a MPC Live in the future. On the 2000xl, I copy the kick, loop,or other sound to another pad, filter it, then assign to play simultaneously with the original to get that 'inside the subwoofer' sound manually. The Live definitely makes it easier from what you show for sure. Thx!!
@MuhammadLaher2 жыл бұрын
I’m new to XL and beat making. I started doing this recently, makes a big difference. But not sure I’m really getting it right. On the XL, how do you create boom bap drums? You can only filter out highs, you can’t filter out lows. And there’s no compression, bit crusher, or enhancers. Do you apply attack or decay on anything? Reverb? When you copy the kick, you filter out the underneath kick down to 5-20? How about the top kick, do you cut some highs on that too? Thanks!
@DJ279V2 жыл бұрын
@@MuhammadLaher It is basically trial and error. In most cases when I filter it's for another sample vs a kick. Usual setting is putting the Freq @ 0-2, Resonance 6-8. Then adjusting the volume until it hits right. There is no wrong way to do it other than not trying at all until you find the sound you like. Hope this helps.
@MuhammadLaher2 жыл бұрын
@@DJ279V thanks, yeah you’re right. Guess I need to learn the XL and work with what I got, applying trial and error. I’ve watched many videos like this one but it’s always explaining features that aren’t on the XL. Guess I need to just focus on my machine. I’ll keep working at it. Thanks for getting back to me!
@DJ279V2 жыл бұрын
@@MuhammadLaher No problem and just let it flow and make the beats the way you want to make them, the way you want them to sound. I'm still learning tips and techniques to this day after owning my XL since 2015, prior to that a 2000 from '97.
@MuhammadLaher2 жыл бұрын
@@DJ279V I try to do that, make beats the way I want them to sound. Comes out very different though haha. I just need to practice more but haven’t had the luxury of time lately. How does the 2000 compare to the XL?

Dope tutorial! I have a question, what's the difference between an fx in the program and in the track? I'm new in the MPC OS and there are things that I still don't get like that one, does it affect different in the sample? Thanks
@mpchead3 жыл бұрын
It's all the same, the fx might behave a bit different but it's all about how ti sounds. If you drop an effect in the Program Edit you can do it per pad. If you do it to the entire Program (not track) You're affecting all the pads/samples in the program.

Marlow,what's the best way to copy programs so we can apply different effects to the same samples? I tried that after your low pass (for bass) video but i couldn't. I had to load the samples to different banks
@GtotheK3 жыл бұрын
You can duplicate the program by clicking the pen thing next to the programs, it will create an identical copy that you can process differently
@PeteOnTheBeat3 жыл бұрын
@@GtotheK i did that,but when I added an effect to the copied program,it also added them to the original. I had to manually add them to bank B and then Bank C. But I'm gonna try that in another session. Thank you.

Eyo Digs, please if I can, I'd like to ask you a question. What MPC model would you recommend to newcomers, or people who like to make boom bap beats, and especially sampled beats? Like, what's good to start with and not too hard to learn for that specifically? I know you've already once sort of talked about it, but I'm still not certain. Some MPC heads also said that you should get the latest thing, stuff that works for you the most, try it out / experiment. I'd love to work with an MPC, but I don't have any experience yet (except for the MPC beats program), noone near me works with MPC's either, and I don't wish to make the wrong decision about picking one. -Thank you lots for your time.

The price of the one alone makes it the best choice for most. Unless you really want the portability of having a built in battery and speaker, in which case go with the live 2

The mpc one is "affordable" and it does what all the rest do. I think it's a great mpc to start. The buttons on the Live don't seem as durable as the One. Saying that I do love the portability of the Live. Any of the two is a great option, you'll be fine.

For me having a subpac is a massive helper, I can turn down my (soundcard) volume and still hear the subpac output, namely the bass/kick.
@v5q2113 жыл бұрын
One question Marlow. Do you think sidechaining the kick is necessary?
@mpchead3 жыл бұрын
sometimes, depends on the situation. I do it more for the ducking effect but sometimes the sample does need to go down when the kick hits. It's a preference for me, I'd say 95% of my beats don't have side chain.
