Hey, thanks for the shoutout on the painting competition! I've watched a couple of your videos, but didn't realize you did monthly reviews of OPR, too. Great format, and I'm now subscribed. I'll definitely be tuning in going forward.

Awesome. Thanks for the sub and for submitting to the painting competition. I really like seeing what people can come up with for their paint schemes.

I watched the monthly stream from OPR and he said that the robots in the HDF are drones, they do not have AI. So there's this human operator somewhere behind the front lines piloting the drone. I'd rather risk a machine then a human on some missions. 🎮🤖 That's probably why the hacker dude has so many antennas on his backpack he's acting like a cell tower for all those signals. 😂

Nice, I can picture some guy playing CoD on 10 screens at once, each one is a different GRUNT

9:17 You can also check out the paper mini downloads that they have for free. Those have 3 color schemes already done for the army, they proxy.

my observations of the new stuff: Hacker: I like the antennae, reminds me of a gaming router Grunts: They are ok, if they are operated by humans then perfect imo and deviates away from 40k Pets: I don't mind them tbh with fantasy, dog works with sappers as you said, rolls could be a lot of different things too Wood Elves: the armor pieces look like they could be carapace from big insects, I dig it a lot, love the owls Ratmen: the big otter feels on theme for what feels like an homage to the Redwall series of books, again deviates from skaven/warhammer

I like the GRUNT and OGRE robots for the HDF. I think that, since they don't have the same problems with AI as the Imperium from 40K, it makes sense for the HDF to have robots. And it does make sense for the HDF to not be comprised only of robots, imho, since humans are kind of a fledgling race in the Sector, they lack the resources to have fully automated armies and still need humans in the battle lines. As for their legs, that can be due to digitigrade feet having better mobility than plantigrade feet. We can observe that in nature, and we'd surely replicate that in our machines when we can create motors that can move as fast as joints in living creatures. At least that is how I read the situation.

I agree. HDF is not the Imperial Guard, and this is a big step away. The army here is designed to protect humanity, not just grind them up on some nameless battlefield so they do make sense. My problem with the GRUNTS isn't thematic or lore, its that they are IMO rather poor units that don't have the firepower of a regular infantry unit despite having good shot, they only have 5 unit squads so can't soak damage like Recruits even though they have robot, and can't take any weapon upgrades. Stat wise, they seem kinda "homeless" in the army. Ogre bots have similar design issues with their default ranged setup just being bad (short range weapons + weak melee), but at least they are really good and beefy with the combat shield setup.

I like the Robots as well. The minis are nice. Don't like the heads though. One or two alternative heads would have been nice but it will be easy to modify the files so they print without heads so they can be replaced. The dog or bird legs are ok IMHO and even make sort of sense. Modern high performance prostetics emulate this type of leg or foot. So its either especially easy to make it work or it offers mechanical advantages. But i really think the robots are a missed opportunity. For the Grunts i don't really see a tactical niche. Neither in the game nor in the lore. Its is written that they are send to do missions that are to dangerous for humans... only neither their stats nor their equipment options reflect that. They could have made them more special and different from the other kinds of infantry. Or the models could have been designed so that they are interchangable with the human soldiers. As sort of an alternative sculpt. This way there could be mixed units or allmost entirely robot armies. Lore wise it would depend from which colony they come from. It also would have made sense if at least one member of a weapon team is a robot. Regardless how advanced they are certainly better at carrying ammo than a human soldier. Or use a rather cheap and simple basic robot with poor stats and give them upgrade option into elite body/perosnal guards, special weapons teams or something like that. This is quite common in science fiction. I also think the design of the vehicles with their diesel punk estetics doesn't fit the robots. Why do they use outdated manufacturing techniques like bolting on their vehicles but they can mass produce sleek and almost elegant robots. Doesn't really make sense to me.

@corvus_armatura7595 Well, ogryn aren't in opr lore at all. They are big robots since the release of the official army. They get robot instead of fearless now.

For the Psy Hacker, I immediately thought of the anti-drone EW kits you'll see in Ukraine. Yes, the antennas are huge but that's because they have to be! I would be shocked if the designer hadn't seen one of those real-life backpacks and took it as inspiration because they look almost identical. I really like the Wood Elves and their "woody" aesthetic. I painted up a set for the contest so we'll see how that goes!

I like the HDF robots, they look human enough for me to not be bothered by the legs. On the other hand I was not happy with the weapons teams, because there's only one pose for each weapon. Meaning that if you want a full squad with the same weapon you have three identical bases. I wish they were designed with interchangeable bodies or, better yet, if you could use regular infantry bodies for them as well.
