If Putin had taken over Kyiv, it would have been a strategic disaster, beacuse Ukrainians would never accept Russian despotism, a constant never-ending civil war, covertly supported by west would have followed. By reaching upto Kyiv, Russia demonstrated that it could take it, but wasn't stupid enough to be interested ina actually taking over. Russia, which is already a pariah in the west, would have become a pariah for the east/ south also if it had captured Ukraine or had killed Zelensky.

It's not the case that everything is going on according to Russia's plan. Rather Russia has experienced suprising defeat to Ukrainian force accross many sectors. There are large number of Russian tanks, aircrafts have been destroyed. This is because Russia has underestimated the strength of Ukraine force which have been continuously funded by US and NATO by sophisticated weapons,tanks anti aircraft missile defence system since the beginning of the war. Also the extream form of nationalism among Ukrainian force and common people also worked as an x factor to Ukrainian strength.
