Interesting topic - very timely! The past several months I’ve found myself thinking more than twice whether I needed the new releases from my favorite brands, like Chanel and Chantecaille. I feel like they have unreasonably raised their pricing and while I have still purchased some Chanel items, I have not ‘automatically’ purchased most new releases. I have actually completely skipped Chantecaille for over a year! This week I’ve been disgusted by what Guerlain pulled with their Rouge G line of lipsticks and cases: because they care so much about the environment ( coughs sarcastically), they have changed the cases and lipsticks so that they no longer fit correctly with the previous ones, plus they made them golden, which doesn’t match, and lighter in weight ( cheaper). Oh, and of course they raised the prices again! It’s really great for the environment to leave your clients with unusable refillable cases! No thought about whether this erodes the trust your clients have in your so-called environmental efforts, I guess. Ok, rant over. Love your channel! Seriously!

Very interesting. Personally I am disgusted with the crazy price increases. Today we have so many brands to choose from. Plus we can access the Japanese, South Korean, Chinese and European markets via the internet. Often they have even better quality, variety and prices. I no longer buy from many of what used to be some of my favorites. While their quality has gone down their prices have gone up. I have become much more selective. I’m also more willing to give an Indie brand a try.

I bought a new bottle of Cristalle Eau Verte last week and I immediately noticed how flimsy the cardboard box it's contained in is compared to previously. The bottle (the new one) is fine, very nice actually, but the box seems lower quality. It doesn't really matter as it's the perfume and the bottle that are important, but a nice sturdy box does add to the luxury experience.

I never understood the hype about the bags with that high price tag on it. I think they don’t look that good. You recognize the bag and that’s why you know how expensive they are. I would never buy them because I don’t love them With niche perfumes it is a different matter. Niche perfumes are very different from designer perfumes and that’s why I love them I don’t buy them so I that I can parade with the smell so everybody knows how much I have spent. I like it more when someone says hey you smell lovely what is it. With make up I look for quality and less for packaging I love the way you set the problem in prospective without being angry or nasty You were respectful and honest Thank you.

I am slowly watching my Chanel facewash go from $55 to $58, my Chanel #1 eye cream from $75 to 80, or my FAVORITE Chanel Foundation from $78 one of them to $155. I love this brand so much it's awesome for me but the changes are small and subtle truly add up. I am constantly looking for alternatives. Even my favorite Dior, LaMer, Laprarie all of them made subtle increases suggesting it's the economy as everything is insane under all of this mess. Brands like Tom Ford are going up too but the product is the same not changing. Chantecaille love that brand but will not spend some of the insane prices they have. They have decent priced products as well but it's truly greedy. The cosmetic prices have increased at the drugstore as well. I am a make up snob I don't enjoy drugstore but when you see a drugstore product $47 you have to stop and say DAMN!! That was a skincare product. Have a great day, and wonderful video!

Thank you for calling it like it is. I was SO excited for the new Chanel face palette but for the first time since discovering luxury beauty I conciously decided to not even try for it. I let it go, didn’t even try to snag one in the only shade that might’ve worked for me. Why should I struggle with their overloaded site to pay $95 for a palette that’s likely too deep for me. That I won’t use and can’t easily resell. Pass. I bought some Dior instead to get the Amazing Platinum tier gift. So excited to receive it. But *some of Dior’s beauty prices are getting to be too much in my opinion-for the quality, their lip oil was a huge disappointment for me. I swear it smells like something I used to get from K Mart in the 90’s. 😂

Great topic. It fits with my commitment to spend much less on makeup this year. Especially since I had to admit that, if all the brands disappeared for a year, the only problem I'd have would be replacing my foundation and mascara. I recommend adding Westman Atelier to your list of the obscenely overpriced. $1,000 for a cosmetic bag - and it's cloth! And for a brand that is supposed to be so environmentally conscious, how come they don't offer refills, even though some of the packaging is designed for them? On the other hand, Armani consistently offers above average products at respectable prices. And Lisa Eldridge is one of those brands that can fill the gap - great quality and packaging, and surprisingly affordable.

Hi Jennifer! Great video. Historically, when the economy goes down for an extended period of time, people tend to cut spending on non-essential luxuries. There is one group of people, however, that tends to benefit from worldwide economic slumps: the Uber-rich. And that’s the clientele that established brands are relying on - and why the price of handbags has shot up so much. The pandemic has exponentially increased the fortunes of the Uber-rich. Furthermore, the Uber-rich clientele now includes their school-aged children. I won’t get into the way social media is creating FOMO among pre-teens when Uber-rich children show off their Uber-expensive luxury goods. As for the people who have had to cut down on the purchase of luxury leather goods, they have turned to less costly forms of luxury, such as skin care and makeup. Chanel has survived several economic downturns by recognizing that the clientele that no longer purchases new Chanel bags can afford to buy Chanel makeup - even when prices are hiked.

Hi Jen, Definitely the price increased a lot in luxury fashion and makeup industry, skincare, food, utilities, services etc. The difference is that luxury is not a necessity but others are. The Dior lipstick released last year has beautiful packaging, probably very luxurious feeling on the lips and nice colour. Same with Chanel special edition lipsticks. But I will never pay $500 for a lipstick no matter how beautiful it is and I can live without. I agree there are too many releases during a year but we don’t have to buy every new makeup product. Maybe we don’t like it, maybe we have something very similar or we don’t need it. Everyone has to have a common sense regarding how much makeup actually needs and think about the lifestyle and how often use makeup. What is really annoying more than higher price is that the quality decreased: bad reformulation in makeup, lower quality in Chanel handbags and so on. These things are unacceptable when we talk about luxury brands and I think is disappointing and disrespectful for customers. Back to makeup, I consider Cle de Peau and Hermes uber luxury brands and in my opinion the quality is there. I still like Chanel, Tom Ford, Chantecaille, some Dior products, Guerlain and few others but their products can be hit or miss and I am very selective and never buy online. With skincare is very personal. I was never tempted to buy skincare from La Mer, La Prairie, Cle de Peau, Sisley etc. My skin is very sensitive, very reactive and prone to blemishes in a record time if is something bad there. Because of that I read a lot about ingredients and I bought skincare products based on what they contain. If you know what ingredients your skin needs you can have a flawless skin without spending thousands of dollars for uber luxury skincare products. Also nobody needs 3443455 steps in skincare routine. All derms I watched on KZbin said the same thing. In conclusion luxury it was and it will be always expensive with or without increased price and because is optional we always can choose and make smart choices. It was an interesting topic and thanks for sharing!🙂

I own products with the same or better quality than majority of luxury products. Not a single luxury lipstick, eyeshadow or foundation is better than what I can buy from Korean, Chinese or Japanese brands because they're the same thing. Luxury brands are the copy cats not the innovators 🤷 I have exact formula dupes in my Korean drugstore items for the Chanel Les Beiges winter blushes - Peripera blush trios for 17 dollars from 2021, the Dior colour correcting /brightening cushions - Skinfood soda cushion from 2022, and the Cle de Peau new eyeshadow quads - Peripera 12 pan eyeshadow palettes from 2021 for 18 dollars 😂and the Byredo "special" formula is identical to Kiko Milano eye quads and the bigger KVD eyeshadow palettes that are made in the same factories in Italy.... I own the originals and the luxury copies of these products and they're the exact same thing but boy do you pay up for the silly name

I've gone off Chanel makeup over the last couple of years, nothing about it excites me like it used to. I feel I'm heading the same way with Dior too, they just keep churning out the same stuff with minor differences so they can say something is new. I miss the old days (late 80s and all of the 90s) when their makeup was really innovative. These days I buy Lisa Eldridge, VBB, Suqqu, Surratt and Sisley. For fashion items, I love luxury and exclusive accessories from more under the radar brands. Here in the UK we have some fabulous brands that are not well known internationally, such as Emma J Shipley and Cornelia James (glovemakers to Queen Elizabeth II and the Princess of Wales) and I love buying and wearing their products and I love supporting home-grown brands too. The likes of Chanel and Dior are too big for their boots; there are other far smaller companies who blow them out of the water in terms of quality, design and exclusivity.

I’m afraid I’ll never wear them. They are on display… WHAT WAS I THINKING!!! lol The luxury beauty market, I feel, was always a way for people to own a piece of Chanel or Dior without having to pay thousands for a bag or dress… I’m sure they are trying to make things more “exclusive” but like you said they are competing with the resale market. Which I own several shoes, sunglasses and other designer accessories that I’ve purchased for 1/3 their original price! Great Video as always ❤❤❤

Great topic Jen, but the reality is that the costs will continue to increase as long as we continue to pay the exorbitant prices. I stopped buying designer items that have their logo flaunted ostentatiously all over their products. I know that many people want others to know that they have a luxury item, but in my opinion this huge logo trend is tasteless and even vulgar. The lack of quality is not only on makeup, perfumes, handbags, but also on clothes. We must individually decide whether we will waste our money on lesser quality products, or we will send a clear message by forgoing non essential luxuries, although I am afraid thing will not get better. We must remember that the ones controlling the markets now are not the same people who controlled in the past. Just a look at men suits today compared with the old Italian tailored wool and silk suits.........nothing more left to say.

When I was preparing to visit my family in Rome, I purchased an Ovcio scarf. We decided that we were going to go inside the Vatican, & u can’t go in if your shoulders & hair r not covered. A lot of tourists aren’t aware of that rule & so there r people selling cheap scarves at high prices for tourists to hurry & get one so they’ll b allowed in. I always wear sleeveless tops & my hair is extremely long. The Ovcio was perfect bc it covers everything & I knew I wouldn’t b fidgeting w/my scarf while I was in there. For anyone that’s interested, it also folds up extremely small & comes w/a little silky pouch to put your scarf in. U can then fit that in your purse or bag. The colors r beautiful! It was so hard to choose, but I went w/a deep chocolate brown bc it matches my eyes & hair. They do run sales where if u purchase 2, u can get them at a lower price. I’m also really thinking hard about what luxury makeup I want to purchase. I live in a small town in SC & we don’t have any Chanel boutiques or malls that sell Chanel. A lot of times if I don’t go online & immediately add to cart, I’m just out of luck. I don’t like to b rushed when I’m making a purchase & I feel that Chanel does this tactic on purpose.

Hi Jen- wanted to ask you if you’ve tried Sweeds other *lash lift mascara? The reason i’m asking is Sweed is running a special now when you buy their lash serum, they give you the lash lift mascara with purchase! I wanted the one that you recommended, but that’s not the one they are offering with this special. PS: As the prices of these luxury brands go up, to unsustainable price points for me, especially, I’m finding myself being a lot more discerning and being much pickier in what, if anything, I’m buying. I’m also looking to secondary markets- (Mercari/Poshmark) for these products. Where i’m putting most of my $ these days are aesthetics/ skin care, etc. If you have beautiful skin, makeup is always secondary.

Costs are rising BECAUSE companies want to make more money than they did last year, every year. Despite the economic realities. That's the same everywhere. Investors run the show and demand getting richer every year. And leadership wants to get their insane bonuses no matter how by making investors happy. Nothing else matters! The price increases combined w the cost cutting well exceed any inflation! None of these companies needs increases like this to make a profit and stay in business or pay their employees! I do believe that a lot is due to hype and it is, indeed, due to the mid-level consumer. Social media shaped the idea of luxury being a necessity for "status" even for the average kid. Most of the 16 yo girls I talk to want a Birkin. I didn't even know what a Birkin was when I was 16. The mid-level consumer running after luxury is especially notieable in beauty. I am a mid-level consumer and spent a lot on Dior beauty, because I loved their products. I no longer buy their stuff, for multiple reasons, but I think that if the mid-market were to react to their poorly reformulated stuff properly they would be heavily hit. Different for the couture line, but still noticeable for some micro-segments. If people were to finally stop buying poorly made Chanel bags, they would not dare increasing prices to that level. Hermès kept their quality, and that makes a huge difference in my opinion. Not all brands did that. They also kept exclusivity in the beauty line, not just with pricing but also by dropping only few things and not so often.

Chanel has segmented their beauty market, with their #1 line at Ulta and Boots, and their seasonal makeup collection offered to boutique customers first. They are probably planning the exit from physical mid-market, because department store and mall traffic are not what they used to be, and mid-market people order online. In some ways, the mid-market exit is sad, because Coco Chanel's vision was about an emerging professional class of women and she reinvented costume jewelry and the work suit etc. Coco hung out with the aristocracy, bu her designs are what SHE wore, not really what they wore. When I was young, I came out of convent school like she did, and a finishing school. My father was a lawyer, and I was expected to do the same. Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein were easy ways to dress, they still have a utilitarian vibe. Unlike Dior which was strictly couture for a lot longer.

Fully agreed! Chanel has already started this in Australia. My local chemist had to stop selling Chanel. A shame because it made it so much easier to see things in person. I cannot rely on photos and influencer swatches, but Chanel is forcing the issue. Plus, they get to control the samples so much more frugally by going online and keeping products in house. One of the main driving points I stay so loyal to Chanel is their availabilty. If I need a mascara, I can easily grab one. If I have to wait to go to a boutique or have one sent, I'm more inclined to try Estee Lauder, Arden or Lancome, because of accessibility. Given the prices of fashion and accessories rising so much, I'd have thought Chanel would open up accessibility to makeup and skin care to rake in the money. If I am forced into these buying and marketing methods, I may even turn my head to Sisley for lux and indie for prices amd quality. I was going to buy a Chanel water fresh blush for $90, but I got a Made By Mitchell Curve Case XL for $115. And it is phenomenal. Blew all my expectations.

Why do so many want to look the same by wearing overtly expensive items that are never worth the money paid? Why pay such exorbitant prices for items that can be bought for a fraction of the price? It's all about showing off a person's wealth and just how much they can afford to spend. Each time I go out, it's rare that I don't get complimented on my look and I'm on what is called in Australia as a Disability Pension due to not being able to work due to a chronic injury that has plagued me for decades! I don't want to look the same as anyone else. I have my own style and preferences and these do not include items that everyone else is wearing. I have sourced rare brands that are equal to the craftsmanship of 'luxury brands'. My shoes are quoted as being "handcrafted in Italy". The workmanship is impeccable, yet the prices are acceptable. I do not pay full-price for most items, yet purchase when reduced. I have a preference for natural fibres/materials which include leather. I purchase one-off and limited garments from a designer who worked with Ralph Lauren in New York. How many luxury brands hand over a lifetime warranty like this brand does? My looks are admired due to not having labels plastered all over them. My leather handbags are another item that are so very stylish, yet you won't see them on someone else. I have a nice collection of fine jewellery from a Jeweller who let's the customer pay off the item over several months. I even own a work of art, a necklace, from this store that was made and designed in Italy that is the only one of its kind in the country. I'm more than happy with the items I own and would never dream of paying such ridiculous prices for common items that are literally everywhere. Wouldn't one cherish a one-off garment than pay well over ten times the price for one of hundreds or thousands? I'm an artist of many genre's and one includes designing and creating knitwear. If I designed a one-off item tailored to fit one alone, would they be handing over $10,000??? Of course they wouldn't! As it hasn't got a luxury label attached. I could never understand why everyone was going crazy over Tom Ford Cosmetics. No-one could give me a definitive answer as to why they were paying such prices for 'hit and miss' items. I purchased an Eye Quad from eBay for a mere AU$40.00 (retail AU$156.00!). I tried this very popular Quad for myself and still can't understand the obsession. I have always admired good quality and know that this will cost more. Yet, if you're smart about how you buy, you never should have to pay such obscene prices for items that are a dime a dozen with nothing special going for them. I don't want a Birkin Bag nor a Kelly Bag! I'd rather go on an international holiday instead. Many times when I see yet another wearing a Cartier Love Bangle, my first thought is always - is this real or a fake? I'm not at all interested in Luxury Branding when it comes to fashion goods. I do buy Cosmetics that I deem worthy of purchasing from luxury brands, yet I'm very choosy during these times when most are noticing the rise in our cost of living. Australia is amongst the costliest places to live and don't think this changes when not living in a capital city. Despite being totally self-sufficient, tourists are shocked by how much we pay for basics like food. I was injured at only 18yrs of age and had to give up work altogether when just turning 21yrs. I do not own a credit card nor have any debt, yet live alone with no support. If I can manage to have what I deem to be luxury goods, yet without the label, then why aren't others following my lead? It's because they want to show off their wealth. There is no excuse for having to pay these absurd prices, none at all. It's more to do with keeping up with the Jones's than sourcing good quality products. If I can achieve what I have on a Pension throughout my entire adult life, any other excuse will not fly with me.🇦🇺💖👩🏼‍🎨

New subscriber, great video and communicated well. Italians are taught to pride the quality of their craft over money. producing inferior quality is insulting to them, As a whole I would feel more comfortable buying a Italian product over French, American, etc. because I know the italian midset is different toward quality control.

Italy has immigrant sweatshops to finish of luxury goods produced in China and elsewhere 😂that's allowing them to put made in Italy on the goods

Chanel bags have considerably deteriorated in quality. Right at the time of the crazy price increase. Cheaper leather, cheaper detailing, tarnishing of the metals, and frequent malfunctioning, things breaking within months of owning it. Same a Dior and others. I definitely would never buy a current bag of either. Go for vintage

I have a chart. I’ll Dm thru Instagram. It’s insane. I watch the prices and have always. I have to shop smart. And you would be shocked. I follow a man who is a leather craftsmanship in Italy. He goes over the materials. The labor. You would be surprised at how much they charge for “their name” and even Hermes What it costs , labor , materials. Etc. It is an eye opener. And people are still buying it.

Chanel prices doubling in less than 5 years is truly disgusting. I thought their bags were not worth the money back in 2019 (the classic flap felt plastic to me, and I could afford to buy them if I wanted to). The problem with Chanel is that the people running it now have a superiority complex and are greedy.

Great subject, yes the problem is that everywhere, and in fashion and beauty industry are gatekeepers, who don’t want new better and creative, and less greed driven people , would come in. They are holding this brainwashing, that if you can shop as elite, you arrive somewhere, you are better than next person. But ppl waking up, they see the illusion pulled on them. Question ourselves, why do I buy luxury items. Well I do because they have quality, details, and they are timeless. But not anymore. Big brands, yes CC, I see you synthetic blends, oversized, I’ll fitting clothes, pulling and tight, short. And of course thrown logos all over, how else we would recognize that it’s prestigious designer, and not Zara lol and when another brainwashing, that we should look like someone else, so we get all those procedures, …. ( it’s nothing wrong when we, as we aging, choose to get what we lost) , but very young girls, started to look like they came from assembly machine 😱. No individuality, no uniqueness. And then put all those logos. I think that time is over. Ppl are getting tired of that. And it’s as far as it goes. Pp,l shopping vintage, shopping preloved. New brands are emerging , who maybe not cheap, but at least they are using real fabrics, details, it’s design pieces or/ and quality pieces, not just cheap fabric mix with logo. Btw , most of highest designer items, loose their worth so fast. The preloved markets are over saturated. So luxury as we knew it’s going to end, like everything else- this fake world, economy, governments, all going to crash, and new world is going to emerge. The underground war is over( literal one), and we won, the humanity won, the goodness won, and we should be starting seeing good changes, as soon as this fall. No I don’t do conspiracies…., I say only what I really know… and besides, we, awaken ones, were talking about Hollyweird for years. And now just look how all those so called conspiracies, are nothing but the truth . And this is just beginning. Very soon we wakeup, in a different world, with new currency backed by gold( that’s what should be ) That’s why we have such an inflation, what you can expect, if our money is just piece of paper/ promissory note…. It’s backed by nothing…, but only the promise, that we all get up tomorrow and go to work… if the world stopped for one day, and no one do anything , it would all collapsed . Love that scarf. I need to check out. Hope they have in red and blue. I think it would be great for my SF climate, just as accessory ,to wear with slip dresses🤔 Have a blessed day🙏❤️

It’s beyond the price increase for me. I feel that Chanel products lately decreased in quality. it doesn’t have the luxury feeling and the ingredients. Chanel used to have class in makeup. I don’t see that class with new releases.
