I always prefer open, it feels more like it's my deck that way, kinda like comparing character building for a MOBA vs a MMO. I think depending on closed archtypes can also be a sign of an underlying issue with the design of a tcg as a whole, it suggests it could be too subject to power creep and broken combos. On the other hand open archtypes aren't perfect either as it can make a tcg feel diluted especially if the staples are too strong, but again it falls to the overall design of the tcg.

It depends on the level of hand holding you prefer in a game. Some players want a clear path, when other players want to explore every nook for secrets in the game.

I think I've been making closed architypes because some of my cards only target cards in certain groups of cards but at the same time, those same cards can be used in type decks if a player is clever enough. Pokémon has a lot of examples for open architypes as many cards had unexpected compatibility with each other in the Expanded format.

currently in my TCG the two strongest decks each belong to one of those ways of creating decks, the first is a fairly efficient closed archetype (very closed style) and the other is a deck that combines the best currently existing units(very open style), quite curious.

I think the main benefit of archetypes is that you can put an new Mechanic and way to play the game in your game without interfiring with the old stuff.

Yes, closed Archetypes are a safe way of adding to your game. They can take away creativity because you are told what other cards they work with. But we all love a good theme to our decks, too!

I've been working on the split of the five factions (colors) of my tcg. It's so tempting to fall into same meta typing like fire does direct damage, or blue controls, black resurrects, etc

I personally prefer open archetypes because I like the creative combos people come up with but at the same time closed archetypes are more practical for competitive play because cards that can be splashed in any deck tend to be broken at times

It is a delicate balance. I bet you've released a seemingly harmless card, just to have someone show you how they can dominate every game with it 🤣😅

@@ShardTCG lol yeah I once made a fire deck for my sister so we can test my game, but a certain sequence of cards kept the deck from being beatable.

I think the problem with open archetypes is that you lose the identity of that specific cards and in the long run, the game meta would be filled with almost the same cards used in a deck with just a slight variation of cards between each deck. It also creates an inconsistent design and gameplay for the meta decks (similar to Goat format for yugioh). Imagine designing a set of new cards only for the player to choose at least 1 card that is strong compared to rest and ignore everything else in that set. This is just my opinion tho.

This is a great point. How we feel about the aesthetic and playstyle of an archetype is very important. Keep your archetype pure if that is what people want for it.

Trudy me if you know modern yugioh you know the archetype restrictions don’t always apply Generic cards gets splashed everywhere (your ash blossoms your barrones) and supliment the stragedy (or with barrone take over the end board) but even disregarding them cards don’t always stay in there archetypes Ally of justice castor was put in so many decks people genuinely didn’t realise ally of justice was a deck (it’s shit so obviously no one played it) Kaigus are a set of monsters that are effectively just different flavours of lava Gollum and whine you can build a deck around them as an archetype it’s not particularly great As a different example sone cards actively mess up there own archetype so work better away from it Herald of the arch light literally turns off the other herald And since it’s one I remake more too psy-frame omega is zombie support disguised as a psychic monster And to top it off there’s whatever red eyes is going that deck had 6 different gimmicks and spun off into a zombie archetype when the first zombie world structure deck came out and gave us 3 bosses that whine not great are at least more consistent that the original (then again you try making an equip, Gemini, burn, ritual, XYZ, fusion archetype work

Coming back to this video I notice you didn't actually define the meaning of Archetype, I assume this would be because you thought it to be self explanatory but for future reference starting the video off by defining the topic of discussion might be wise. Also unrelated but what exactly does Archetype refer to, are the Creature Types and Elements of Shard Archetypes or does it mean something else?

That's a good catch! When I make a video or I am training someone at work, my goal is to break everything down to its basics. But it is true that I did go into the video that everyone already had the same preconception of an archetype as I do. So my definition of an archetype is a compatible set of cards with a common theme that is outside of the regular creature type and element type match ups (although a lot of Archetypes will fall into the same types most of the time). So in Shard tcg, Vespids are an archetype because of the name/species. But Rodent Swarm cards fall into this by being compatible with an action in common but also that they take on a sub class of rats/vermin that isn't defined in the creature type itself being a part of a larger class "beast".

8:06 Hmm so a closed Archetype is bad because too many of them can make it where pretty much none of the cards can be compatible with each other so it basically breaks the game and a Open Archetype is compatible with all cards, but can also be a little bit game breaking because with the right type of people, they can make overpowered decks so if you want to make a tournament for your trading card game, you would have to go through your attire set choose the ones that would be overpowered and make a band list, I think I got that right my brain kind of got fried after the first few minutes lol

@ShardTCG Жыл бұрын
Yes, but at the same time, you might want a closed archetype to have potential game breaking effects that are contained within the bubble that is a closed archetype. Therefore, protecting and limiting their power to the rest of the deck. It is efficiency vs. compatibility. Balancing a game is never easy, and I feel for all creators out there 😅

This is true. But we thought to make them rodents in our game as a new twist on an old tale. If you don't like it, I understand. It's not for everyone.
