It's not a faux-leslie sound, it's the real deal! The Magic Dingus Box controlled an Echoplex and a Leslie rotary speaker.

I knew Danny (& Roy Buchanan) well working as a DC musician. I was also an Electronics tech, so I worked on his 'Magic Dingus' setup on occasion. The plate on his Tele is the holder for the control box for his servo driven Echoplex head slider & the Leslie cabinet he used. Lotsa fond memories of Danny from my DC (& Laurel Cyn) R n' R days.

Danny true was the Humbler. Shame what happened to him but you never know what demons one may be fighting in their own head. RIP Danny G, you were one of my favorite human beings. Thank you for the life that you did live and thank you for this vid! Always glad to see someone giving Danny his due.

I got to know Danny through a mutual friend and we met at a recording session in Virginia. I asked him to show me how Albert Lee did those great finger rolls. So Danny invited me out to his home in Accokeek MD. Of course he was light years ahead of me but we both were greatly influenced by James Burton and were the same age so we discovered that we would always tune into Ozzie and Harriet so we could watch Burton play. We wanted to see if we could figure out how he got that amazing sound. I went out there several times about a year before his death and it was the most amazing experience. I realized that you don't just go there to have him give a lesson. You hang out most of the afternoon. Different pickers would show up and jam for awhile. Danny was quiet, gentle and very patient and I will always cherish those days I got to spend and to know him. One of my all time favorite players and people.

Really cool concept for DB! Danny is 1 of my idols and I love his neck bottle side. I added the 1st DJ cross fader on a guitar which relates as far as on board FX. I evolved the kill switch idea adding more speed and new techniques like crab scratches aka triplets. I’d like to see exactly what tricks he did on the DB more and on what tracks it offered more tricks or advantages over pedals on the floor.

So... did the stick he get for the dingus box drive him on to be a more creative player and all-round Telemaster or did it curtail what could have been a wider imagining of music and sonic palette through the use of effects?

Not only didn't Fender put a metal plate on the Danny Gatton tribute guitar the put a bloody 22 fret neck on it! That's taking the piss if you ask me.

I think he actually wanted the 22 frets. I recently watched a video of him showing off all the features of his signature model and he didn’t sound upset that it had 22 frets.

I can't believe I haven't seen this before but WOW! Who the hell does Heavy Mental think he is (obviously a fitting name). I was never fortunate enough to see Danny play "live" but I've seen him play live in videos and I've known many of the musicians he played with over the years and I won't profess to know as much as Levi because he absorbed himself into Danny. I have always seen the metal plate on Danny's guitar and never knew it had a purpose until this video. I'm looking forward to The Humbler actually being completed and just watched the Anacostia Delta DVD that was just released this month over the weekend with friends that actually did see Danny play and personally knew him and members of his band and not a single one shunned me because I didn't actually see him play in person. I love music and great guitar playing and will like and talk about anything I want. Good on you Levi for not taking crap from this idiot.
