The world would be different in that it would be worse. You don't validate someone who is being irrational and blaming the way they treat you on you. No part of what Scanlan was ranting about was any of their fault. Vax in particular tried many times to have serious conversations with him, but he lied or dodged the question every time. They have given him opportunities to reach out to them but he never took them. They've asked him his age multiple times and he never answered. Vax asked him to talk to him if he ever needed to. He wasn't even honest about the money he lost buying fake drugs and while he was buying those fake drugs Vax was sitting outside ready to storm in because Scanlan asked him to. Yea, just about every other character has had their personal issues pertaining to the goals of the party, but they didn't go out of their way to deal with those personal issues. The only person the party has helped that only involved personal reasons was Keyleth's Aramentae. If Scanlan had said he needed them they would have been there for him in a heartbeat. It's his fault, not theirs. In the end, they are all comrades. They have all put their lives on the line for each other. That should mean more than knowing of each other's hardships and family members. Scanlan was being blatantly selfish. They have proven time and time again that they are willing to sacrifice their lives for each other, yet Scanlan doesn't see that as love. Also, to say that Grog listened is not accurate. He heard what Scanlan was saying, but he didn't fully understand. He answered in the only way he knew how and it was innocent. Grog is ignorant of Scanlan's selfishness here, which makes sense and there was nothing wrong given the context. Yet, the others were aware of Scanlan's selfishness, and to knowingly avoid that for Scanlan's sake would be wrong.

The only reason he got it was because he watched the twitch chatt from the previous episode, since they pre record the episode since episode 100 of campaign 2. So if the Twitch chatt would not have screamed Kiki´s mom since the first time the M9 lay their eyes on Viridian, it would take alot longer for any of them to make that conection.

(He was checking because he wanted to see how many would still be watching that late into the session.) He couldn't have seen it in the current chat, where it did appear at the point he mentioned, if they had prerecorded the show, but he wouldn't watch back a previous Twitch stream during a filming. So it seems possible that their prerecording is intermittent, possibly.

MASSIVE spoilers all of Campaign 2: Caleb killed his own parents, but his plan, including every spell he learns or develops across the campaign, is to go back in time, save and substitute them, and then send his parents to safetly live anonymously in (IIRC) Tal'dorei. I think he refered to them in the present tense, because it is his desperate hope that his future self has already succeeded and they are currently alive, through a time loop he had not yet started/closed.

That's not a good jab. Like, at all. Scanlan couldn't remember her mothers name and he KNEW he couldn't remember her mothers name. In fact, in previous episodes, he even mentions feeling sad about it and greatly regretting it. Scanlan doesn't have to play the moral high ground like Percy does, because Scanlan already has it in this scenario. Percy just can't help but be insufferable. He can never be in the wrong in his own eyes. He has to be correct. He has to have the last word. Percy was a terrible character and everybody who looked up to him and admired him, never truly understood his character.

My friend tried to do a Scanlan moment but I was not having his shit because my character genuinely cared about people and I rote down all the backstories cus I learnt from Scanlan so I was able to answer all their questions and fire back with "do you even know what happened to me?" (i was an orphan but as sacrificed to a cult and ended up becoming a warlock cus the sacrifice went wrong) He couldn't remember my backstory because it hadn't come up since I revealed it and now I won't let him forget the time he tried to be a dramatic dick and then just showed he was a hypocrite

@@liamandrew2481 Yea I 100% skipped his origin story. I'm not in his campaign. :P @OP: To be fair, that's the "CR" effect. When players try to be as good as the CR Players. If two of my players did this (use their backstory in a dramatic rage quit, and another player shut them down by taking notes) then I would be annoyed in both. I'd have definitely increased the difficulty for future fights if I could. It's dramatic and heartfelt that it happened in the critical role campaign we like and we always try to embody dramatic moments. It's unoriginal to copy Scanlan's emotional situation, but it's even worse for you to bully them for it. They wanted a dramatic moment, and I always persuade my players to tell a good story rather than "win" a situation. I'm not against your character "having good memory" and answering "What's my mother's name?!" when it shows up; I AM however disappointed that you stole the show and embarrassed them for not knowing your backstory. Of course, you don't have care about my perspective, I'm just giving my two cents. I don't know exactly how it went down and I do know that there are many ways that would make it flow well. I'm simply assuming based on what you wrote that you didn't approach it respectfully.

@@XoIoRouge I will say, though, that a lot of the impact of Scanlan's moment is that the rest of the group didn't know. Either they had never talked about it or it was something mentioned but not remembered. While in OP's case, the background was something stated and remembered. Scanlan was right, the group didn't even remember what had happened to his mother, but in OP's case the player accused everyone of not caring to remember their backstory when one of the characters did remember, and spoke up because they cared. It can definetly be a big roleplay moment when someone says, "You dont remember anything about me!" And the response can be, "Yes, I do, I remember [backstory]!" I wouldnt punish a player for dramatically lashing out a little in character and another character clapping back with memories. And I wouldnt blame OP in taking a bit of personal satisfaction in taking good, relevant notes.

I think my favorite moment was when Scanlan’s method of guilting the rest of the party (most of whom had been through at least the same as he had, and in some cases even worse), was thrown back in his face by Percy. After the resurrection ritual where Pike and Grog (both of whom had already died at least once already) put in so much effort and heart, his reaction to being literally brought back to life was incredibly unfair, and to have him taken down a notch was satisfying.

Scanlan had every right to be upset. This wasnt his first time going down, and for them to tie him up and smear pudding on the walls so his daughter, the one person in the world he cared about their opinion of him. The entire party treated him like a punching bag and not a friend up until that point

He’d never got a true arc of his own like the others, they saw his downward spiral as just comedic short man things(which, to be fair, was his own fault), and when he finally was taking something serious they fuck it up for him.
