The Sony 20-70 F4 is the sweet spot!

Havent used it yet but the net 24-50 f2.8 looks interesting! Limited zoom range, but very small

Hey there, havent done any side by side comparisons, but I feel like the II is smaller, lighter and sharper - would you be interested in a more in-depth review? I can try to get a GM I to compare

I have both lenses and never use the 28-70 despite it being so small and light. The 24-70 GMii is just so dang good in every situation with no compromises. The only lens that comes close is the new 20-70 but it’s a full stop slower at f4 which is less than ideal on a high MP body like A7RV in low light.

I won’t lie. That 24-70 kit lens is decent enough for video if you are just getting into videography in a Sony full frame. It’s junk for photos obviously for a kit lens.

Very nice review thank you. I'd love the Sony, or Sigma... but can't justify the price. Most people unless making money with photos can't ...

Totally understand - it’s a large upfront cost if you’re not using the camera to make money. Or buy more affordable glass, and save up if you want to upgrade later. There are some pretty great prime lenses for more affordable prices

It's all about the 20-70mm though :) - kidding aside, great comparison. These days 28mm does feel a bit tight though as even phone cameras give you a 24mm equivalent and content creators really popularised the 20mm focal length which the Pocket 3 uses for that reason. It seems these kinds of mid range 28-70 zooms are falling out of fashion to some extent? - One exception is maybe the 28-60mm just because of how insanely small it is.

Just depends on what you'll be shooting! I love the 24-70 and 70-200 range 24mm is about as wide as I like to shoot unless it's for a certain stylized shot (or skateboarding!) so I'm there with you on the 24 vs the 28

This is hardly an apples to apples comparison. The kit lens is awful and Sony should be embarrassed to include it with any camera. Maybe you should compare it to the Sigma version for a apples to apples test.

Definitely not a direct comparison, but you'd be surprised at how many people ask this question because they're new and see 28-70 and 24-70 and wonder what the difference is. I have a video going over the Tamrom 28-75 thats a bit more of a competition than the 28-70

I remember getting this with A7R III moving from a5100. I came home and after half an hour of shooting I kept asking myself "why are the images lacking detail. Is this a full frame thing? Why are my a5100 images look sharper and better with a Samyang lens!". So I took it back to the store and explained this and he suggested a 85mm 1.8. After that, I knew for the first time how important lens quality is. When I saw the price in this video as 400, I told myself this isn't even worth 200 and here in Canada you can get a 2nd hand for 160$ which is where this lens belongs. In short I agree that this is one of the worst lenses Sony has made.

Put Pro's and geeks aside. the GM II (or any equivalent maker) is a major waste of your money.

All depends on what you're shooting. Where I like the GM II is where I'll need a sharp zoom that can hold eye autofocus in video in low light (weddings, events, moody talking heads even). Pretty weird edge case that not everyone will run into, but it's served me pretty well. If you don't need the features the GM II has, Tamron or Sigma offer great midrange zooms too
