To me brand loyalty means: I have loved every Fender product I've owned, I respect the innovations Fender brought to guitar, and I dig the overall culture of the brand, so I give their products higher preference when choosing new gear. That does not mean I'll buy anything they make just because they made it, or not consider other brands as I also own Ibanez Peavey Orange etc. Whatever I find that works for me is fair game, Fenders just consistently deliver what I want so I choose them more often.

I never understood the “brand loyalty” thing, I’m your average joe just playing for fun with my buddies, I play schecter, agile, ibanez, even a crappy BC Rich warlock cause it’s “super brutal” and it’s a funny thing. This goes through a bunch of mismatched pedals into either an EVH, randall, or dual rec into cabs that could be orange, Carvin, or hartke. The moral of the story is who cares, it’s your gear, do whatever makes you happy

But the real question is when that someone actually becomes a true expert, instead of some vain person who has read a book. That is where we need to exercise caution. If someone cannot prove their credentials, don't believe a word they say. My father is dictionary definition of this fact. For example, when i signed up for the Air Force, my father went on an hour-long tangent about what will happen at boot camp, what I can expect from my instructors, what will be the outcome after boot camp, on and on. He has never served a day in his life, nor did he even sign up AT ALL. He has no clue how the military works, and has no rights to talk like he does know anything about the military at all. Only believe people who can prove their credentials.

Brand loyalty: I bought a Yamaha bass and it was good. I bought another Yamaha bass, and it was really good. So, I like Yamaha basses. I also got hands-on with Yamaha's Rivage concert console system, and found it to be very intuitive to use, despite its complexity. Based on these experiences... Yes, I like Yamaha. But, I play DW drums. Yamaha drums are fine, but they're not my preference. If I were to look at guitar amps, it'd probably not be Yamaha (though their guitar head is kinda interesting). I'm a fanboy for Yamaha for the product lines they do well (even generators and Wave Runners). For product lines where others do it better (for the same money, anyway), I'm looking to others.

I find myself using the Fractal Audio' AXE-FX III the most out of the amp simulators that I have, I like and use, I look forwards to trying out Neural DSP's Quad Cortex when I am able to, I have bought licenses for a handful of their plugins which I've never been disappointed with any of them. The options available nowadays is actually mind-boggling to try to even keep up with quite honestly. I am a Revv Generator purple channel lover/user, it is quite possibly the best modern, all-valve beast if I had to pick a single-channel to be working with as I can dial in monstrously heavy yet very tight and clinical high-gain sounds, it's used a lot and the only monsters that rival it for me, my want and my needs are the Rivera Knucklehead K7 and depending on tuning, a Fryette Amplification Pitbull Ultra Lead. I've gotten a lot of good use out of the extremely cheap but doesn't sound like it Mooer Preamp Live running into a suitable power amp and cab combination, Two Notes TORPEDO rack processor and the accompanying TORPEDO Wall of Sound plugin have been equally great for doing the opposite, enabling me to run my valve amps as I would but without having to always have 3 or 4 mics plus a DI setup on an extension cabinet or two with deliberately mismatched loudspeakers utilized, that has really made tracking anytime fun and possible. whichever works for you really. It's really quite simple. Like most personally, I use and like quite a wide variety/range of gear ranging from a low powered, single-ended class A all-valve amp including valve rectification rather than my much more commonly used/goto and often absolutely needed class AB push/pull based power amp topology making use of negative feedback for a much tighter yet far heavier sound with resonance, presence and in some cases optional settings for how tight/damped you want the power amp to be for the way that it tracks, also have a few quality all-out tranny amps which offer even tighter, fast, accurate tracking that is especially useful when the tracking needs to be super tight yet still heavy when layering up with the guitar tracks using a less efficient or tight power amp, track tempo often dictates what can and can not be made use of. Even make use of the often not useful at all hybrid amp variety in the form of Vox's valvetronix modelling amps, one of the first and one of the later heads, I actually use it set to the same amplifier I'm tracking at the same time, so I'll use the Brit 800 and 2000 with my JCM800, 900 SLX and JCM2000 DSL50 and even my Victory the Kraken and the US Hi-Gain with both a Mesa Mark V, Peavey 5150, 5150+, Fender EVH 5150 III, Mesa F-50, Recto-Verb 50, newer 25 watt very compact Rectifier head with a far more viscous/aggressive mid-range on-tap and a trusty Dual-Rectifier, it does not replace any of them amplifiers but what it does do well for me is work well with those aforementioned amps tracking both at the same time, they take a boost pedal or an OD acting like as a boost pedal to tighten up the preamp whilst hitting the front-end harder just fine as do the real things of course. I have a large collection of high-gain distortion pedals, amp-in-a-box type pedals and preamps too which is always being added to, I often use these with a preamplifier and power amp combination into a cab that takes pedal particularly well or a few combos that do the job, I've had a lot of great sounds running preamp models out of the box and into a valve power amplifier's series FX Loop return, that can take a really good sounding amp model I have found personally FWIW and just improve it by adding more touch sensitivity and all that good stuff, the key is fucking around and being willing to try anything I have found but obviously YMMV on that. All the very best to everyone in these dead times for gig workers and to all along with your family/loved ones on behalf of me and mine, sincerely mean that, cheers! Dean and family PS: I'm awful at breaking up things into paragraphs, please understand it isn't deliberate.

On people buying the same brand of guitar. I work for a guitar store (not gonna say names) and honestly the amount of people that are brand loyal is very low in the consumer level of things. As for the people that stick with one brand or TEND to stick to one brand. Most brands tend to stick with similar necks, radius, scale length, fret height, and pickups so it makes it easy for people to see it as their "sound" and "feel". Of course every guitar will not be the same, so guitar to guitar will vary. I picked a red Les Paul over a brown one because I did like the neck better, and had to battle a few Telecasters out as well so always see what you like and what feels best for you.

Can’t speak to how diaphragms effect transient response, but can add onto your explanation. Tube mics and any other mics with transformers on the output generally have slower transient response. Couldn’t tell you why. More stuff for the signal to go through, as my simple mind would rationalize it. Editing to add that I’m not suggesting a slower transient response is a bad thing. Just that knowing helps inform your decision on where to put what mics.

re: brand loyalty, the facts are that it exists, and it can overcome rationality to some extent. I think that it all starts with a good core product - something worth being loyal to. You can become loyal because of an artist, but if the product is not good, you're less likely to come back (e.g., Dime and my less-than-stellar Chinese Razorback). When people like a product, they become more likely to buy again and become what I would call brand evangelists. For more aspirational brands (thinking more of cars like Ferrari and McLaren), you may even become "loyal" even though you'll never own one. I personally felt the pull of PRS after having an SE for a very long time as my first non-beginner guitar. I'd always wanted a core, and when I saved enough, I managed to get one. I've since had as many as 4 at a time, but have moved on a bit. I'd consider myself a PRS evangelist because I'm more than happy to let people know how great they are and why, but I know they're not for everyone. I'm also open to other brands - I've owned a bunch over the years, and even sold a core PRS to get an indonesian-made Strandberg (yes, I think they're that great, in design at least). The problem with loyalty is when it becomes so strong, so much of a consumer's identity as a person or artist that a brand can do no wrong and all others are terrible. This is something I'd term brand fascism, perpetuated by brand zealots. A brand zealot (and we've seen plenty out there) are so involved with a brand that they will trash anything else just because it's not their brand, despite the possibility that another brand is just as good or better. Brand fascism can also manifest as classic cork-sniffing and gatekeeping, the "xxx is not a real [brand name] because it's not made with the magic fairy dust that can only be found in [country]" crowd. This is unhealthy for the music community because it becomes more antagonistic than supportive. In short, it's great to (even enthusiastically) evangelize in support of brands that someone uses and likes, even argue (hopefully amicably) about why one brand is better, but it's an entirely different thing to be a zealot about it.

@@BOBANDVEG MI is one of the few industries where old tech is more desirable. To be fair, planned obsolecense wasn't quite as baked into everyday life as it is today (so things were made to be repairable and more robust), and I love the feel of a nitrocellulose finish, but there' so much room for good innovation (among plenty of total whiffs) that people are going to blindly denigrate, purely because it's not how they did it in 19xx.

I was shocked the other day when he actually made positive comments about VSTs. Everything now is done either in a basement or someone's bedroom and it's BRUTALLY CLEAR that interest in making music is strong these days. Very few people can crank up a Twin Reverb or Twin Jet in their bedrooms. With the covid situation I wouldn't be surprised if Glenn ends up doing youtube fulltime as less and less bands even consider studio recording anymore.

Understandable, but to a degree amp sims are kinda like the electric cars of the guitar amp world imo The best do an amazing job at being a top notch car, but if you’re after the thrill of the physics of a true hardwired tube amp, then a sim is just missing that thrill. Yeah the electric car will go really fast, but most petrol heads after the sensations like the mechanical sensation of changing gear, clutch pedal, red lining, etc.

I always wondered why people are brand loyal too. Maybe because they know they will get what they like, and that it will feel and play well in their experience so they feel they need to be loyal. I agree. If it's a good guitar, I don't care who makes it unless it's an investment. The POD go is cool. They have upped their game. Yamaha bought them and I think they are really pushing quality and the tech side of the brand. Jacksons are cool as fuck. Good video man. Thanks buddy.

Hi Glenn, your resident economist here. Brand loyalty is basically what's known as consumer surplus. People who swear by Gibson, Fender, or in this case Jackson, are valuing the brand higher than the price they pay. Let's say that a USA Dinky costs $1700, but a person loyal to Jackson is willing to pay $2000 for the same guitar. The consumer surplus is $300, and serves as a quantifiable measure for something like brand loyalty.

Not into brand loyalty - but that product placement for Revv is working out really well in this vid! Just giving you shit :P I love the Revv amp model on the Helix hope to get a real one someday but I'm up to my ears in Friedman recently and I fucking love it.

There is something a little ironic speaking ill of brand loyalty...while sitting in front of a wall of Revv heads...wearing a Revv shirt...haha But your point is still right on. I have brand preferences, but as you said, if another company has a cheaper guitar with equal performance, I'm going to save myself some money.

I have the Mooer GE200 as well as a couple of Boss GT-1 multi-effects pedals. Are they the best? No. But they are damn good and for the money you can't go wrong. The GE200 has the added benefit of being able to hold user-installed IRs.

Peter Wichers, one of the original guitarists from Soilwork, actually works for Jackson, saw him working their booth last 4 years of Namm, spoke to him and that's his day gig living out in Arizona, this was prior to covid 2020, he might have went back home to Sweden though, I almost did...

Brand fidelity is like falling in love for the first time, a few months ago I got a Danelectro black coffee ( love it!!! )and decided to get to know the company better. went berserk for any thing Danelectro and I fell for a Longhorn short scale bass, when budget allows me to get it. 30 years ago. my effects were exclusively BOSS, closing doors for really good FX cause to me, THEY were the brand. Now, I'm checking anything not BOSS........

I've used many digital modelers over the years direct, and as MFX into tube and solid state amps. My current rig, for the last several years, is a Boss GT-1 + SY-300 + EV-5, that lets me play guitar only (GT-1), synth only (SY-300) or layer both. I control the blend of both with the EV-5. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Also a Zoom user, still have my 9002 (purchased new), G9.2tt, GX1on and B1on; really interested in hearing the Zoom G6.

Brand loyalty can sometimes be justified, when it comes to guitars at least. You can get used to certain neck profiles and choose instruments that simply feel familiar. Of course, there is always the question: where does brand loyalty end and fanaticism/zealotry starts. I love Jackson guitars more than any other brand, as I have yet to see a Jackson that failed to meet expectations, however I have absolutely no issue with trying out new cool things.

The Mooer micro preamps are awesome. The cab sim on them is not the greatest but it works for headphones.

For the cotton swab in the ears comment. I always use them to clean my ears before putting in my In Ear Monitors, however I only go as far as the in ears go. You don’t have to go any further and it’s just to keep your IEM’s from getting disgusting every time you use them. Measure how far your IEM’s go into your ears, match that to a cotton swab by holding your thumb and finger there like a depth stop. That way you won’t go any further and cause damage to your ear drums. Afterwards your IEM’s won’t look like they’ve been dragged through a butter dish when you take them out. Ew!

I've developed brand to loyalty to Jackson, based on my experience owning and trying different guitars. However in my case it only applies to the MIJ ones. Most companies made their reputations based on the USA models. If they contract their own designs out to Korea, etc, it's almost a different brand in my opinion. MIJ Jacksons are an exception, I think, great quality versions of the original US versions. If I like something I'll stick with it, if only to save brainpower, lol, I think that' s part of it too!

I don't really believe in brand loyalty but I do think of myself as a Fender guy. I have a few Fender guitars and a lot of Fender swag but I actually play my Harley Benton the most.

Brand loyalty is about defending choices I think. For too many people folk see the instrument as more important than what you do with it. Fine for some, but I find more joy in making sounds on a budget guitar worked on than worshipping a badge.

I have a Mooer 005 micro preamp (the 5150). I like it when I just want to bring my pedal board to rehearsal and run it through the ISP Ultralite power amp. Sounds pretty good, but definitely doesn't sound as good as my actual EVH head. That being said, the 12 drunk as people watching you play at a dive bar don't give a shit if you're using the 005 or EVH head so it's nice to save your back on those gigs.

I'm thinking of getting a Harley Benton progressive and upgrading the stock active pickups with EMG 57 66, and a set of hipshot locking tuners. Also get the nut and intonation set for 11-56 NYXL strings for drop c. I feel like this would get me about 650$ Canadian, and could probably compete with a Schecter at around the 1100$ Canadian On a side note, in a couple weeks, I'll be getting a Joyo Zombie to replace my 100W Peavey Valveking. I'm also a fellow Ontario resident. (I'd offer to lend my Valveking to you for a Fearless Gear Review, but I don't have the original packaging and don't know how to ship without damaging it. I just know it'd probably Purolator and definitely NOT Canada Post) Edit: I might also get a vert 2x12 Harley Benton V-30 and the TC Electronic Eyemaster for the novelty of having a semi bedroom level Swedish Chainsaw

Well, I used to be a Volvo man when I drove a '92 940. I thought my main daily drive will always be a Volvo because I simply loved that car so much. Now I drive a V70 and while it's a good comfy gear hauler it's also... well, pretty much a regular car. I simply cannot fall in love with it. I want my 940 back :-(

Hey Glenn, sorry if you've answered a similar question, but I was wondering what the best mic setup would be for live streaming aside from a USB mic. Could I use a mixer with phantom power and a dynamic mic, or should I use an interface and mic? Either setup would be used outside of streaming for instrument and vocal recordings. What would be my best choices for either setup in a $200 to $300 range?

Hi Glenn, I have few questions. I didn't find anything on your channel about recording acoustic guitars... I want to make decent demos...so what you think about: 1)Steinberg ur44 or I need something better? 2)I like recordings with a dual mics, for the "budget" option, for recording guitar and vocals, is it better:AT 4041 + TLM 102 or103; OR 2x AT 4041 + Rode NT 2000? Price range Used / New is about 220$ - 1200$( in my country) 3)Amps Marshall JCM 900 or JMD1(Yes, I like Doug Aldrich and Whitesnake, I'm guilty :) ) price is 600$ for few months old heads. What you think about JMD1? This is it, try some Rakija(Kajsija, Dunja, Sljiva) "Rakija connecting people" ;) Uzdravlje

Well, as far as guitar brand loyalty is concerned for me, I just grew up with Metal in the 1980s and at that time, Jackson was the guitar in every great shredders hands ( it was the cool factor for me). And yes my Jacksons meet all three criteria 😉🤘.
