In defence of quality street and roses, they were the original Christmas tub sweets and they were all made up of stuff you could only get at Christmas. The others popped up later and are just mini versions of chocolate you can get all year round so to me the 'taste' of Chrstmas is quality street and roses!
@sangfroidian5451 Жыл бұрын
Adding additional context, they're older generation chocolates being introduced in 1936 and 1938 respectively. It just shows, tastes change....no surprise there then.

Would also say they are not really meant to be eaten in bulk just a couple here and there thus the heavy tasting ones like strawberry cream or caramels are not too much on the stomach if you only have a few.

Agree that Roses and Quality Street are Christmas selections and are the two acceptable tubs in our house. Minature Heros - you might just as well pick your favourite Cadbury's bar (Fry's Turkish Delight, thanks for asking) and have that instead. Celebrations on the other hand are an insult to Christmas tubs, Mars Bars and Snickers...? At Christmas?! Twix isn't even a chocolate ... it's a biscuit for crying out loud. And they've dropped the Bounty... the best one by a mile. Disgraceful. Yours etc.
@petersvillage7447 Жыл бұрын
Also, at the risk of sounding a bit 'old', Roses and Quality Street are absolutely not what they used to be. I find Quality Street basically irrelevant these days, not least because I can remember what they tasted like when they were Rowntree chocolate, not that sickly sweet Nestle stuff. Also, both brands used to be much more attractively presented - Roses in particular is just a generic bunch of squares now, but there was a time when they were a 'special event'. In our house they were only bought at Christmas, and rationed out carefully...

'Quality Street' and 'Roses' were the original Christmas tub/tin sweets, and they only contain sweets that are unique and available at Christmas time. They are the taste of Christmas. The other two just contain mini versions of chocolates that you can buy the year round and are nothing unique or special. For me, my favourite is 'Quality Street'.

Think Roses and Quality Street have been around forever, so I guess when sweets were not the norm these were a real treat for everyone, way back these would have been a real revelation. Think the fruit centres have been overtaken by new more standard off the shelf chocolates. I remember when I was a kid buying Fry's chocolates and you probably had more choice of manufacturers, they have all been bought up I would guess and some of the types relegated. No mint chocolates in there but I guess the mint might migrate to other chocolates. Great taste test Alanna

It’s Roses vs QS for me because you can get the rest any time of year. They’re just getting in on the market for those festive tubs. I’ve heard that Americans/Canadians don’t have a lot of chocolate variety with flavourings, beyond nuts and mint, so doesn’t surprise me the orange/strawberry ones seemed to really cause a negative reaction. Just a question of taste and what you’ve eaten all your life being here. Great video 😄

Hi Dan, here in Canada we have Quality Street ( one of my favorites) and at Christmas we can get Cadbury Roses. A lot of Canadian chocolate comes from Cadbury and Rowntree. Personally my favorites is anything with carmel or fruit flavours. I live in Ontario and was raised on British chocolate brands. The only chocolate I really don't like is Cadbury Easter Creme Eggs they are way to sweet for me. But give me maltesers or crunchie, yum. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

At least with Celebrations you know which is the Bounty before you pick it. With Revels (do they still exist?) it was more like Russian Roulette. Most of the choices were round, chocolate covered balls outwardly indistinguishable from a Malteser, so you never knew when you were about to bite down onto that coconut badness.
@Elwaves2925 Жыл бұрын
Revels do still exist and that's why I used to like them. I still do like them, just can't eat them anymore. The Malteser was slightly larger, slightly shinier and lighter.That's how you knew that one. The coffee, orange and another were indistinguisable. You are such a lovely and wonderful person, Alana 🥰. When I was a child, chocolates like Celebrations and Heros just did not exist. So what DID we have at Christmas (to eat until the kids felt like throwing up) - usually at my grandparent's house - cheese footballs, chocolate Brazil nuts (with really thick chocolate), salted and dry roasted peanuts, tiny little multi-shaped cheese biscuits, Turkish Delight, candied oranges/lemons. cheese/pineapple cocktail stick 'Hedgehog', little sausage rolls, Grandma's "Black Magic" chocolates and of course Quality Street. Not all at once, though. Bleuch (more than once)! 🤮

The contents of these things sometimes vary when you don't expect them to, particularly when there is a lack or shortage of a particular variety. At the beginning of this month, my wife was given a tub of Cadbury Heroes on her birthday. At first she was surprised to find there were no Twirls among the chocolates, until she dug around, and found that the lack of Twirls was compensated for by putting three full sized Cadbury Twirl bars at the bottom of the tub.

You were almost spot on with your evaluations there, except I think your dislike of caramel (nothing wrong with caramel IMHO) incorrectly skewed the loser to be Roses. Quality Street has always been the worst overall for me (the purple one and the green triangle are the only things stopping me binning the tub right away), so much so that I've always called them "(Lack Of) Quality Street"! I think Celebrations would be a clear winner if they ditched the Bounty, which you correctly pointed out was by far the worst choc. The problem is, what do they replace it with? Checking Wikipedia, a giant M&M or a giant Minstrel are about the only Mars UK chocs not already in the tub and I'm not sure about either concept. Because of the Bounty disaster, I just slightly give the win to Heroes myself.

As a child i loved the toffee ones liked the truffles and chocolate and dispised the caramel and fruit creams. Now I am completely the other way around orange creams are tge best and toffee goes in the bin. I understand them all getting smaller but the switch from tins to tubs was probably the hardest part.
