"A Christmas Carol" is pretty much the reverse of "It's a Wonderful life". Think about it, one story a man is shown how his life made things better for those around him, while another shows how his life made things worse for those around him. Both men learn different lessons that make them embrace life and those closest to them.
@DavidWildmouth6 жыл бұрын
This was done because both men in these movies had vastly different kinds of attitudes. In It's A Wonderful Life, a man thinks that he has no worth and needs to be shown that he does. In Scrooge, a man thinks that nobody else has any worth, and he is shown that they do. So different ways of getting them to come to terms with the value of people and Christmas itself was relayed to them

James, thank you for this review. I especially enjoyed the segment about the Alastair Sim verison of "A Christmas Carol". My Mother passed away in April of 2016, and she was a woman who celebrated Christmas 365 days a year. This was her very favorite Christmas movie, she would watch it all year long. So much so that she wore out the VHS tape and my wife and I went store to store to find her a copy on DVD. Since her passing I have not watched it myself, but, I think I may finally be able to do so now. I can still hear that bellicose intro in my head at the opening credits during "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing". Again, thank you James.

But that makes sense. For example almost everyone who is old enough will list games that are old for his favorites for example. I don't think there is a guy above 30 who will list a game that is new. And even if he does, he will still say that the old games are best. Same with people that are interested in movies. This is how it goes.

Other honorable mentions - White Christmas has definitely grown on me. We had this movie playing in my home just about every other day this December ( and made a point to watch it once a season perhaps starting 5 years ago). Just a nice story with some wonderful music and dancing from the greatest generation of American people. Another few featurettes I liked seeing this year were Sesame Street Christmas Special, and the Muppets Christmas Special. These were some stuff from my childhood which I hadn’t thought about until watching it with my daughter this year. Elf also is certainly up there as a modern classic, maybe new modern classic. It’s got another 6 years before it’s a 20 year old movie. The actors playing the characters are all stars, and they pull off their characters well. It’s just a great and clean Christmas movie.

I think the top 2 are Jingle All The Way and A Christmas Story. Jingle All The Way represents the more stressful things of Christmas that other movies don't touch on like going through the struggle of getting that perfect gift for a family member. A Christmas Story is like reliving your childhood and wanting that special gift but wasn't sure if you were going to get it or not.
@mrgold9297 жыл бұрын
Yeah but in Jingle All the Way, the mom and son over react, they are pissed off because he was late to the kids karate class, but he was at work, and the mom doesn't do shit to say "He's making money for your gifts." And then, the kid is pissed off because his dad can't make it to the parade, but he never did before so why expect it now, its not like he's trying to get away from, he left for a reason. Jingle All The Way is probably the worst Christmas movie ever.

So much rape, though. It's a pretty fucked up movie but it is awesome.

Unless I missed it, you forgot a mention for Irving Berlin's "White Christmas".

Couldn't agree more on that all-time classic pick. A Christmas Carol (1951) is just a flat-out masterpiece, for some reason no one outside my family ever seems to have heard of it

I'm glad you have Ernest saves Christmas as an honorable mention. I grew up watching it on a VHS tape we recorded off tv.

Home Alone, which is called "Esqueceram de mim" ("They forgot me") here, used to play just about every single Christmas Eve afternoon (or maybe it was Christmas Day afternoon, can't remember that) here in Brazil and that was such a tradition that people would complain when it didn't happen. Sadly I think the tradition died over the time.
