The mid-size SUV market is heating up, as evidenced by the return of competitors such as the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer and 2019 Honda Passport and the redesign for 2019 of the five-seat Hyundai Santa Fe. So we gathered these three along with old standbys including the Ford Edge, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Murano for a week of testing in our 2019 Mid-size SUV Challenge.

I rented the santa Fe for 10 days, rake up 400 miles. It's excellent! Of course, the rental is a base model with 2.4L motor, and cloth seats. But I find the power is adequate in metro commute. Also, the cloth seats are very comfy! The ride is also excellent to handle the california borken pavement. I have backpain problems for years, and I find it not at all punishing over pot holes. One the tech. side, rear cross traffice warning is standard. I absolutely love it. It's a must feature for SUV! The smart cruise control worked well. It only quite working when I drove through winter storm. My only concern is the engine reliability. It made a dry strange noise when cold start in winter morning. I only hear it for a few seconds, and it goes away. I got 26 average of MPG during my 400 miles. If I baby the gas padel, I can get near 29 on the highway. I wish Hyundai could do something to improve the highway fuel econemy.

Hi guys! I have really enjoyed this review. I am a big car fan no matter what type of car it is - SUV, sedane, sports car - I love them all. You are discussing SUVs from the correct angle. Most reviewers (CarGurus, AOA, Redline Reviews), they love to talk about handling, horsepowers, response of the transmission. Most people that drive SUVs praise the comfort, rationality, safety way more than those performance features described above. Very detailed discussion. Thank you very much!

Santa Fe 2.4 base model rental didnt have any lags. It's probably the drive mode that creates lag with turbo engine. 2.4 natural would be better choice I think with full option since you only use them to get to places. Can always add aftermarket stuffs to increase power if you really want on 2.4 NA engine.

Based on their comments , I have no idea why or how they come up with the ranking. They complain about the power delivery of the Edge but rank it above the Nissan and blazer, the Cherokee rides the best but placed last, the Passport is sloppy handling and has a crappy interface but it's second. The Blazer is the second to last but most fun to drive and one of the best engine and drive trains for the class??? Whut?! So first place goes to the car that is the most unpleasant to drive with the most uncomfortable seats!

ban sin Hello ban and thanks for asking. I purposely passed on the Turbo for 2 main reasons. 1 I don’t like any hesitation if I have to mash the gas pedal. And second is long term reliability. To answer your question better do a Google Search on the 2019 Santa Fe’s 2.0 Litre Turbo engine known issues. Don’t be fooled by advertisement links. Look for a forum that has hundreds of people giving their own opinions and any issues they they might have in common. The 2020 may be more reliable then the 2019 due to first year possible gremlins. Hope that was helpful

@@gene978 Can't agree that forums full of unverifiable anecdotes about vehicles are a trustworthy source of reliability data. I do agree, however, that a small displacement turbo is not the optimal engine in vehicles the size of the Santa Fe. In fact it's exactly the same engine that was available in the KIA Sorento until 2018 when it was dropped. Bottom line? Vehicles that approach two and a half tons when loaded with fuel, passengers, and gear are likely to struggle either with performance, reliability, or durability.

What they don’t realize is that the Grand Cherokee is a true rear wheel drive platform so the interior packaging is not going to be as good as the front wheel drive based suvs in this test. The other competitors are just 4 door minivans.

717, correct. The others don't offer 3 V-8s either, 360, 485 and 707hp which puts the Trackhawk in supercar territory(yeah, I know it's twice the price). And there is a diesel. I think Toyota still offers AWD for their minivan, it should be in this test and not the GC. The reason many manufacturers are moving to small engine turbos is they are looking to make money on post warranty repairs and service, they don't make huge money on new car sales. Example, dealer cost for a clutch job on a 2007 Hyundai Sonata, $4,200!!! $2,200 for the flywheel alone because they claim they can't machine the flywheel.

@@lryoung17 I thought that the 4 runner was more expensive, but you are right, cost-wise it fits. The 4runner is far more off-road capable, tows and hauls more than any of these vehicles. It does suffer from a stiffer, truckish ride and substantially lower mpg. The 2019 4runner still looks like the 2010 model with the same old reliable engine, all interior measurements are exactly the same at Edmunds.com's car comparison tool. The only reason the Kia Sorento is not on this list is because it is a three row midsize. Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe are really the same vehicle. @stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 4 жыл бұрын
@@chuckers40 KIA dropped its two row option in the Sorento the same year as the current Santa Fe debuted. We're a small family (2 adults, a teenage daughter, and a big dog) so we keep the third row of our Sorento stowed about 90% of the time. In that configuration its passenger and cargo space is identical to the Santa Fe. However, we do find that third row very convenient when we chauffeur a gaggle of teenagers or need room for 6 or 7 passengers on a local trip that would otherwise require two vehicles. We don't need it often but when we do it's a godsend. And when we don't it's great for family trips for 4 or 5 passengers along with gear and luggage.

@@Wasabi9111 The 2020 Sorento has not yet been introduced. It will be interesting to see if the KIA picks up the features you note. I suspect it will. But in addition to the much superior V6 available in the Sorento the occasional use third row of seats is extremely convenient, even for our small family. As far as the price premium is concerned, comparing MSRP's can be misleading. We purchased our second top trim fully loaded Sorento last year for about $6000 off MSRP ($42,000 plusTTL). That real world price was still more than the top trim Santa Fe MSRP but the V6, the third row, and the somewhat more upscale materials in the Sorento cabin were worth the premium to us. I should also add that my KIA dealer gave me a trade-in allowance for our 2012 Sorento within $800 of the KBB estimate of the trade-in value of a comparable 2012 Highlander, the champ of resale value. The Santa Fe is a great vehicle (imo). It's essentially a 2017 two row Sorento (same engine, AWD sytem, infotainment, etc.) with updated features. But for us, the HUD, child/pet detection (a GREAT feature), and other bells and whistles didn't trump the KIA's V6 and occasional use third row.

Love the Santa Fe. Very impressive. Just wish I could buy one with a naturally aspirated V6 and an occasional use third row. Oh, wait! I can! It's the nearly identical KIA Sorento. Same size with exactly the same cargo space. Same AWD system with 50/50 locking differential. Exactly the same infotainment system and the same logically placed controls. Same eight speed transmission but mated with a NA V6 that exhibits none of weaknesses sited for the Santa Fe's turbo 4 banger. All with a third row that's surprisingly accommodating for a couple of teenagers (More legroom, in fact, than the KIA Telluride.) Same excellent warranty and in my experience 100% reliable. That's why we purchased our second Sorento last year after looking at most of the competition reviewed here.

Not sure why comparison tests like these ignore the Sorento because it's due for a refresh in 2020, because it has a third row of seats, or simply because KIA prefers that attention be focused on the Telluride for the present and doesn't make the Sorento available. It's closely related to the Santa Fe and shares most of its features and driving characteristics other than the fact that it's offered with a 3.3L naturally aspirated V6.

There are certain features more important than others. In my mind, drivetrain is one of the top. And, for me, naming #1 a car that have no immediate response when accelerating is just wrong. And combine that with seats that become uncomfortable after 45 minutes and you have the recipe for a lousy long trip. I don't care so much about the quality of the plastics as I do about having a car that can be used for road trips.

The easy answer is size and convenience in the intended mission of these vehicles. The "Tweener" class between compact CUV's and larger midsize CUV's (188""- 192" vs 195"- 203") ) is easier to maneuver and park in urban/suburban environments and easier to fit in a garage (especially if you hang a two foot long bike rack on the rear.) And yes, you can purchase a Highlander or a Explorer for about the same price as a modestly optioned Grand Cherokee. But doing so will easily top a $50K MSRP.

@@MACTFordEdge You're correct, my error. That doesn't negate the point, however. I'm actually a fan of turbo 4 engines in appropriate applications. I've been driving such vehicles since the late 1980's (Saabs) and I have a 2.0L turbo in my GTI. But there is a huge difference between powering a 3000-3500 lb vehicle and a midsize crossover that can weigh nearly two and a half tons (!) or more when loaded with fuel, passengers, and luggage/grear. As Ford elects to put small displacement turbo engines in larger and larger vehicles they're banking on the fact that the majority of new car buyers replace their vehicles in about seven years with fewer that 100K miles. I have no doubt that there exists on the planet examples of Ford four banger engines with twice that mileage and the 2.3L Ecoboost in the Mustang is an excellent engine, I think. But just because there are examples of much smaller vehicles with six figure mileage doesn't mean it's an optimal choice. Physics is physics and there's a reason that almost every manufacturer (other than Mazda and Subaru) offer six cylinder engines either as standard or optional in their midsize SUV's. Highly stressed, small displacement engines can be configured for performance that matches larger engines but durability issues cannot be ignored. All the more so when the vehicles close in on two and a half tons.

The design, heritage, and marketing of Jeep puts the Grand Cherokee into a different niche or class. Personally I wouldn’t suggest to anyone to cross shop a Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, etc. with a Grand Cherokee. Maybe the Cherokee, but not the Grand Cherokee. The others are really just commuter, light duty, pavement queens that just don’t share anything other than 5 seats with the GC.

The amount of technical information you guys leave out and your obsession with gadgets (make sure you talk about the conversation mirror) is staggering all in justification of your picks. These are all completely arbitrary judgments that should mean nothing to anyone looking at any of these cars. In my opinion, the Jeep shouldn't even be in this comparison It can do things that all the others (which are modified front-wheel-drive car platforms) couldn't dream of doing. Hence the lack of interior space and most of the other negative you guys talked about without any explanation as to why.

@@XelaOso850 can confirm, I own a Honda passport elite. AWD, 7500 towing capacity, more storage than a grand Cherokee, better gas mileage, equal power, equal torque… cheaper, and it’s not a fiat so it isn’t going to shit the bed in 2 years

The Murano is just as ancient as the Jeep. The Blazer is missing a lot and is over priced. The Sante Fe lacks comfortable room for all drivers. The Edge is decent but the interior is old n boring. The Passport has way to much black plastic on the outside and black rims are ugly and shouldn’t be on all models.

I just watched a bunch of city boys pick apart a grand cherokee for not being a good enough 2 row minivan. This whole list is dumb. You should of had the regular cherokee in this comparison, which like the rest is a FWD crossover. Can any others on the list really take you off the map, or tow 7200lbs? didn't think so. There is nothing wrong with a manvan comparison, but don't ever include the grand cherokee in a manvan list. The ford edge should be at the bottom of the list. Its a plastic bowl on wheels. Out of 6 vehicles (where 1 doesnt even compare to the others) you got only two right, and those would be the passport and santa fe
@stephenhendricks103

The criteria on which the vehicles were evaluated match those of the vast majority of customers in this product segment. There are those, of course, who judge them according to the extent to which a vehicle boosts their testosterone level but that's not most buyers in this market segment.

James, you're right. The GC's direct competition are the 4runner and Pathfinder(if they are still rear drive based). Though none of them offer 3 V-8's and a diesel. This is also FCA's cash cow, they sell especially here in the snow belt where it seems every 5th vehicle is a Jeep.
@james2042
@james2042 4 жыл бұрын
@@mkedan6741 As a person in the snowbelt with an 08 grand cherokee, I can attest to that. The GC really doesn't have any direct competition, the 4runner is a BOF vehicle which would compete directly with the wrangler. The pathfinder got "blazered" (turned into a fwd crossover like everything else). The closest competitor to the GC is honestly the Land Rover Discovery Sport. If you want to consider FWD based crossovers as competition, then we would be looking at the honda passport, the pathfinder, the rav4 adventure, but realistically those are a different class of vehicle

It seems to me, the big 3 did not learn much from economic turndown and bailouts of the last decade. They are back to pinching pennies (and premium pricing), cheap ass interiors and haphazard build quality. Detroit still has yet to build a "world class" vehicle. They were ok when they were the only game but Asia will kick their ass all day long. They cannot even build their corner of the market (pickups) on a level playing field. If they were competitive there would be no chicken tax.
