Hi @Fast Check; what is the best PPI range for a monitor?; I buy a 27" 4k but I need scale to 150%; I need more space to see big Excel files, do you recommend a 32" 4k, or in 32" 4k I need scale again?; I'm over 40 years. Thanks in advance, other question, 4k monitor scale to 150% its the same that a 2k monitor in resolution? (2560*1.5 = 3840; 1440*1.5 = 2160 )
@factcheck18453 жыл бұрын
In your case I would go for 32". Keep in mind that scaling is dependant on your vision acuity and on the "angle" the screen occupies in your vision, what I refer to as visual pyramid in the video. That's to say that if you don't change the visual pyramid you probably won't change scaling. One reason not to widen this conceptual pyramid might be that the further edges of a 32" might otherwise be too much at an angle (you don't look at them straight on) and you'd also need to move your head more for the edges. Still, if the 27" wasn't in your case too close for comfort, and that you wouldn't mind to expand the visual pyramid a little bit, you might be comfortable with a smaller scaling like 125%. As for scaling, in most cases and from what I tested so far, it's a multiplication on the font size and UI elements: text that should be 10pt is effectively 15pt with 150% scaling. So it works mostly as you described. I say mostly because different programs can deal with scaling differently: some might choose to scale the UI and font size in a certain way that doesn't adhere exactly to that calculation. Anyway, I'll go more in depth in the next video (hopefully we manage to allocate some days soon to finally complete it) that's dedicated to resolution and scaling.

@joelman19892 жыл бұрын
Sitting further away would just make it practically the same as a 24 inch. So then why not just stick with 24? Either way, 1080p on a 27 is fine. 1440p and above is ideal but you won’t have an issue with 1080 if you’re on a budget. If you’re not, go for 1440.

The 27" incher have gone through a heavy discount and it's now currently on sale for 209$ and the 24" for 170$. I really appreciate the bigger working space on the 27" but my only concern is the lower ppi density as it's just 1080p on a 27". I sit about 70-90 cms away from the screen, a bit further away from most. Should I worry about pixelated texts as I do mostly text editing based work and reading? Or is the 27 incher a real steal at the price to grab for? Need your thoughts.

@factcheck18453 жыл бұрын
Naturally if you know 100% that a native 1440p resolution on 27" is too small for your eyesight (witch if you have a normal vision acuity, it's not the case, you might also not be used to it initially) since normal scaling keeps the aspect ratio, with a 2560x1440p 16:9 panel you would end up with approximately similar effective vertical resolution to a 1920 x 1200p 16:10 with a 1.25x scaling on windows. (Assuming scaling windows scaling works exactly dividing the resolution by the scaling like 1440px/1.25 = 1152px. Can't personally validate this right now by comparing a 1440p to a 1080p monitor, but I think it's how it works) But, I don't think it's too relevant for the comparison of the monitors. I personally think 1440p, once you get used to it, it's absolutely usable by most without scaling on a 27" panel, so unless budget is tight, for productivity, I would advice you not to consider resolutions 1080p since 1440p and even 4k prices are relatively worth it in my opinion. If you find out that you don't really like 1440p unscaled, you can definitely use scaling (for some application it actually improves the readability of fonts compared to an equivalent native panel), the only drawback would be that you spent more that what you could for an approximately equivalent experience you would get from a 1080p. On the other hand, if you were to go for a 1080p panel and if you find yourself constantly desiring more effective screen pixel space, you'd be stuck having no further headroom for a smaller scaling with a 1080p. For 27" vs 24", as you might have grasped from the video, 27" is a very safe, all around good size to get. Naturally, this doesn't apply for 1080p resolution, in that case, in my opinion, it would be a complete waste of space and pixels would be very visible, 22" is already plenty for 1080p, if not unnecessarily a touch too big for people with uncompromised vision acuity, but apart form occupying more space and being less movable there's really no major disadvantage to go overboard with these spectrum of sizes, you might actually have the added freedom to position the screen relatively far away before starting to lose detail.

@factcheck18453 жыл бұрын
@@mma4179 I've never tested a monitor lamp myself, but some people claim it works for them. Some things that you might try: 1 Lower the brightness of the monitor and see if that helps. 2 Position the monitor further away, especially if you wear glasses in front of a computer anyway. 3 if you have a dual screen set up, have 1 monitor perfectly in the front and the other on the side, and try to use mainly the one you have straight on, the secondary one is just for stuff you don't need to reference too often. This is because constantly changing the plane of focus might induce dizziness (have you ever tried reading a book as a passenger of a car?). Btw if you have a 1440p panel that you use unscaled, you might not need a secondary one since you would have more space for stuff. Also for many programs even if the icons might appear small initially, it is not a problem as you most likely click the tools through muscle memory/using shortcuts/or just remembering the positions. But I also think with smaller icons a decent mouse that has a precise tracking makes the experience so much better. (The girl you can see in the video that makes the infographics is an architect so she obviously uses CADs and also Revit, and once I let her try a mouse with a great sensor she couldn't come back)

Awesome, very detailed video. I'm 50 years old, with good eyesight (just beginning to need glasses, my eye vergence and accomodation just started changing). Just starting to get back to work after 1.5 years working at home almost exclusively. We have dual 32" 4k at work and a work issued laptop, I have the option to purchase monitors with my own money to ease my work at home experience and possibly continue to make that a significant portion of my work week. A deal recently came up on a nice samsung 27/28" 4k display and this video has helped me decide to purchase 2 based on this video, knowing that I might only be able to use them for a few years and probably want a 32" upgrade due to my age but I was able to factor that into the cost. I don't consider the comment about the length of this video to be applicable (any comment is valid, I just think it doesn't fit with the real audience of this particular analysis). @factcheck18453 жыл бұрын
Hi Tyson! In my opinion, flat is the way to go for 16:9 and curved for 21:9 and beyond. I personally haven't tried a VA panel so I can't really give you my take from actual experience, but I'd like to suggest to watch this very straightforward video for an introductory top level explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWXFooxteLmifsk . For productivity, I'd personally go for an IPS monitor mainly for larger viewing angles (for the extra flexibility in case you later want to use the monitor as a secondary screen) and usually more legible text when scrolling and so on due to lower black smearing. Yet the latest VA panels from Samsung (such as in the Odyssey G7 (16:9 curved though) are pretty good as far as dark to dark transition response times and therefore black smearing goes).

I already have 3, 21.5 but I need more real estate also I find good amount of area of top of these monitors where my eye reaches comfortably and also usable area between the start desk and start of monitor. I get a bit of neck pain moving my head side side to side between 3 monitors so thought of getting a larger screen to utilise all the area my eye reaches comfortably without turning my neck. Still 28 and 32 remaind a mystery because 14 inch 1080p seems small resolution and if I upscale to 125per I am not getting that much real estate. And 32 seems a bit big size given for 10 years I am accustomed to use 21.5 and suddenly seeing 32 feels like I am using a tv and removes that seriousness and professionalism while coding.

what you prefer reading normal size book with glasses or reading triple size book from one meter with huge letters. the idea of screen is to able to see entire screen from comfortable distance. if you using 32 inch monitor from one meter is way far from normal viewing distance for monitor, if you look at 32 from 70 or 80 cm means you overworking your eyes. cos eyes not only accommodate they also moving around in accommodative state. Just reduce content from monitor and switch to tv with really good size and viewing distance. therefore 27 is the biggest screen possible for monitor, with bigger screen expect eye strain.

If by "2k" you mean 1440p, for productivity if budget is not a problem I would definitely go for 4k resolution, worse case scenario if you find the UI and texts too small for your liking you can still use 1.25x or 1.5x scaling on windows or "smallest" (witch on my 21" 2304p (slighly bigger than 4k) corresponds to 1.6x) on mac.

I have appreciated 22 inch monitors for dual screen, space and price point and the availability as well as seeing hi refresh. 24 is like a standard monitor size nowadays I own a 24, 30 inch ultrawide, and 2 27 inch monitors. Ill bring out the 24 for trouble shooting other computers and running tests on consoles. Some times i will lay down on a pad when i need to stretch my back and continue working on a project, ill have my 24 or 30 inch ultrawide on the floor. As of now, i decided hooking up my 27 inch curved and 43 inch tv as a 2nd display and for youtube and some gaming. Most of the time i been utilizing 27 inch monitors. I think go with what is comfortable and natural to you. 27 has become a happy medium and is immersive as ever.

finally, a video that tackles this issue of monitor size and sight. I just ordered yesterday glasses for viewing computer screen (I have strong myopia and presbyopia and wear adaptive glasses that make it difficult to find a position to view a small screen ... so I ordered plain glasses to reduce some diopters. So myopia yields a closest ) and I am in search for a screen for editing video .... and definitely bigger is not better. I need to view again several times your points to understand them right (la tua pronuncia inglese potrebbe essere più fluente e più facile da capire ... Penso che capirebbe meglio in italiano anche se non è madrelingua.) Your content is exceptional and I have not seen around people commenting on eye condition and screen size, which is the most important factor.

Can't really decide between 32 inch and 34 ultrawide .Please anyone uses both or used can give some opinions about this ? I've been using 24 inch for many years and it's time to upgrade this old boi.

I have both (32" 4k, 34" 1440p), the 34" 21:9 ultra-wide is more closely related to a 27" in my opinion as 27" is the actual diagonal if you crop of the 16:9 portion of it. All things considered, I personally prefer 16:9. If you prefer having a single monitor set-up, maybe IF you find the 21:9 to be more a e s t h e t i c AND we're talking about a 2160p resolution for the ultra-wide (unless you prefer 1440p/use display scaling/don't have perfect vision acuity, mouse control and or don't like small text) AND it doesn't cost much more than a comparable 27" (witch they absolutely do) I would possibly prefer a 34" 21:9. So overall in my opinion 16:9 is the practical way to go for most people/use cases. Here's a complementary copy and paste of a more detailed answer I wrote to another comment: As for the 16:9 vs 21:9 debate, here's my opinion: I've used for several years a curved 34" 1440p 21:9 ultra-wide before buying two 21.5" and 32" 4k 16:9 monitors. As far as my experience goes, even not considering the resolution into the equation (since there are currently on the market 2160p ultra-wide monitors), for the majority of use cases, (video/photo editing, office, gaming to name a few) 16:9 is a better ratio . It's also generally cheaper too, and there's much more choice on the market, especially the used one. Contrary to the general narrative, 21:9 is actually less "immersive" in my opinion because the angle of your peripheral vision is something like 180° horizontal and say 160° vertical, give or take, so it's even more squarish than 16:9. That being said, there is one use case where I found the 21:9 aspect ratio to be actually preferable to a 16:9 one, and it is web development, because the ultra-wide format is very suitable to have multiple columns of code opened at the same time. There's a further argument in favour of the 21:9 that you have more space for reference material on the horizontal axis both on the left and right that is conveniently accessible with just a slight sideways eye gaze or minimal head rotation. This is sort of accurate, but in my experience a secondary monitor on just one side, perhaps in a vertical orientation, is just plain better, especially on an articulated arm, because you can angle it in the most convenient way, and the bezel actually helps separating logically primary content on the main screen) and reference or hierarchically less important content on the secondary one on the side. Some situational 21:9 advantages: Naturally if your workflow is organisable on the screen in 2 squarish areas of equal importance, 21:9 is a perfectly suitable solution. Another case is for some particular games such as driving simulators especially for the cockpit view, where the horizontal space is more valuable than the vertical one. 34:9 is as you can imagine are just 2 16:9 and that's really extreme and basically unusable without a strong curvature but that limits how far you can be from the monitor not to be disturbed by it. TL DR : 16:9 is generally better imo, if you need more horizontal space, with few exceptions, a secondary monitor is a better solution to a single 21:9 monitor.

@@factcheck1845 Thank you so much for your explanation. Right now i'm using two 24 inch 1080p monitor side by side and i was willing to buy 32 inch 2k for a while and using that as my main monitor and stacking one of my 24 inch on top of it. Whenever i go to market i constanly checking out monitors and today i saw 34 inch on action and that one impressed me a lot. It was pubg on the screen and that wide angle really put me in the game while watching. I dont play games that often but when i play i really want to be in it. Actually that's the main reason for me to upgrade my setup to go big and get immersed as well as 2k resolution for sure to have more space while working. I'm a 3d artist and game dev beginner and after seing that 34 inch 2k monitor today, It started to make sense for my taste since i'm planning to use my 24 inch on top of my main monitor.But yeah it's a tough choice and both 32 inch and 34 inch monitors are much more rare than 27 inch ones in my market so i dont have a choice to test them side by side. I guess i need to wait couple more months to pick one just like last couple months hahah damn wish i would not have this much of hard times while picking one :D

@@gyatsolix Bruh, if by "2k" you mean 1440p that is 1440 pixels on the vertical axis, in my opinion forget the 16:9 32" the dpi is just too low, unless you struggle with close focus (as explained in the video). Putting a monitor on top of a big monitor is an ergonomic nightmare. If you personally find yourself fascinated by the 21:9 aspect ratio and you tried one in person, well, go for it, a lot of people swear to genuinely love it! It's objectively a fine choice for a single monitor set up. But consider that the fascination might also be a result of the "novelty" compared to your 16:9 monitors. The only way to form a preference, if you can't use inductive reasoning and your imagination, is honestly just to use one for an extended period of time.

please be aware that the monitor size is not the length of the monitor. I learned this the hard way by thinking that 55 inch TVs are all the same length and Hight and ended up getting one that was to short in length for my project.

Took a year to find this. Lol. Better late then never, great video and presentation. I got a 32 LG 4k today. A little big and guess I have to adjust compared to my old 27 4k. I do feel like I want it further away from me yet then it is harder to see menus etc. Getting older I guess. I didn't fully understand which was better for 40+ people, but it seems you where leaning towards 32? I'll give me 32 a few days to see if I can get used to it or not. Otherwise return it for a 27 inch. Subscribed to the channel as I enjoy your style 👍
