Never seen so much water splashing my face except of course when I'm having a shower ! I understand why the blue water racers modify their boats to seek some shelter. It makes sense to take care of the skipper, too. Your stable dry boat sure has a relevant design. Very interesting review.

Thanks for sharing. Great overview and detail. Especially on the Proto. What a ride. You really make us realize just how hard, and challenging this will be on long, solo, trips. Curious to see how this will evolve when foils are added/applied. Thinking about more automation, electronics, to make this more "sustainable" and stable. A bit like the Imoca Occitane. Wide foils, with a very deep cut to give is lift with stability. Power and computer presence are required (and for now costly still). Obviously, the power should come from the sails, not just for speed, but also for the computers. Using the rig, stays, pressure on the foils, and movement of the boat as a way to generate electricity. The is still a great future for the Mini's. It takes people like you to drive the passion. Merci. Greetings from Port-la-Foret.
@TheSailingFrenchman3 жыл бұрын
Definitely things to consider, but keep in mind also that the class rule regulates the electronic you can have onboard. For example on the imoca class, foil trim (in french it's called "asservisement des appendices") can't be controled by a computer.

@@TheSailingFrenchman Thanks. I wasn't aware of this. Just curious, do you have ambitions to participate in the Vendee Globe next time round? I know it is not the Caribbean Cruising we all love, but it seems to me you are pretty addicted to the competitive aspect, the Tech, and in sharing your adventures. Personally I think it is crazy not to spot anywhere though. There is just way too much to see, enjoy, and share along the way. Again thanks for sharing you insight, experience, and passion with us all. A+

Hmm. That prototype looks like it's another "wet" boat. You certainly seemed to be working harder on it too. These boats remind me of how people talked about the Contessa 26 and 32 boats. They were often described as "subnarines with sails". LOL

Impressive sailing but I prefer having the water stay in the ocean. My 24’ Martin 244 has a high freeboard and a shoebox hull to deck joint that creates a lip which helps keep the water off the deck. I’m not a racer but a recreational sailor on the Salish sea so I’m happier when dry.
@melee4014 жыл бұрын
Very interesting boat. LOTS of work though. Ballast tank, tilting keel, lee boards to drop and raise. It will broach a LOT. You have to come onto a half point of sail at best or something until the tanks, keel and lee boards (whatever) are proper before you take to your needed to point sale. So yeah, lot's to do on that one tacking. Lots of lines and other stuff in the cabin too to get in the way. Just wondering about how the ballast tanks dump and fill each other? How long does the pumping transfer take? Open tanks to the cabin" Now you're shitting me.
@TheSailingFrenchman3 жыл бұрын
Yep, all valid points. For ballasts you can fill more than half of it on the leeward side before changing tack, then it's about 10 minutes pumping to finish filling it. Then you can use gravity to switch from one to the other
@lambert58644 жыл бұрын
Very interesting and wet! Do you think with more time on it you could sail a proto like that more stable over longer periods of time? Also, what would your ultimate mini be? Scow bow with balast tanks and swing keep? Or even with foils? The scow boat you currently use, how does it handle shorter and steeper waves? Can you keep the speed up? Best of luck with your campaign! Please keep making these videos, they are great!!
@TheSailingFrenchman3 жыл бұрын
Well the Maxi 650 is definitely the best mix for me, since it's fast, stable and reliable. I like the equivalent in the proto class, which is really similar design, just lighter (carbon fiber) and more powerful (bigger mast, bowsprit, quanting keel...etc), but I like to be in the production boats because you compete with others with the almost exact same boat. For now I have never been on a foiling boat... but maybe on day :)
@DialedN_074 жыл бұрын
Hey there Hugo. I'm much more familiar with catamarans than the monohulls. But on our racing cats, when the nose wants to dive downwind we try to add a little more mainsheet to pressurize the rear of the boat and turn more downwind. It seemed in the videos that the boat was rounding up into the wind under higher pressures. I was hoping you could provide some feedback on this.
@TheSailingFrenchman3 жыл бұрын
Well for me it's the other way round, I don't know much about cats (the racing ones, I've done a lot of charter on floating caravans, but that's not sailing). On the mini's, if you have to much main sheet when hauling downwind, in case of a dive or overpressure, the variation in apparent wind speed makes the wind push the mainsail that pushes the bow to windward, like a pivot point around the mast and keel
@erikvictor4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your videos! Question, we see you often hand steering. When you are racing, how much time do you hand steer, and how much on autopilot? The imocas are 99% of the time on autopilot they tell me. thanks and fair winds!

@TheSailingFrenchman3 жыл бұрын
Well I'm not sure when I'll go back on a proto, but the idea behing it is to optimize boat balance. So you can add weight where you need it and when you need it (and not have weight when you don't need it, reducing drag in light air for example)

@@daveamies5031 well you should tell boat engineers putting those bulbs on the front to reduce bow waves are pointless they would love to know, just add freeboard.
@daveamies50314 жыл бұрын
@@TheShorterboy 🤣🤣🤣 There are many considerations that go into a boat's design, as they say every boat is a compromise, no design is "wrong" as long as it achieves what it set out to achieve. I suspect adding a bulb to the bow is a lot cheaper than adding more freeboard to the length of a ship.
