I agree!! THANK YOU so much for practical, helpful advice. This is what I was looking for. I just wasted an hour sifting through inane videos of "advice" such as "It's like totally not rocket science! Just get out there and start painting! Teehee!!"

So helpful! Thank you! I paint on a small scale and have ventured to small table tops and plant boxes. My daughter has asked me to paint the side of her small shed which is huge for me! This answered all my questions! Much appreciated!

Great info. I would add: 1. Be aware that regular latex-housepaint is meant for projects inside. If you're going for coverage outside, as well as colors that stay good for a long time: invest in a longterm-outside latex. Get like 10 liters of each color (I mostly go for: a blue, yellow, red, two types of brown and white/black), and store them for your next projects. The benefit of that type of paint is: stays better, longer, has extremely great coverage, but you can also mix it up until total transparency. It's like working with acrylic paint, but with the option of oil-thickness.. 2. Also: bring a rough brush to clean off dust/debree. The better quality latex paints stay very good for a long time (like 8 to 12 years before the red or yellow starts going a little bit, if you're not applying a UV coat at the end). But if you add water and it becomes this milky-consistency, throw it away. That's the cheap stuff: it'll be gone within a year or so... Also: remember to take a number of empty buckets/cans, so you can store mixes made on the spot. (tip: when in a larger lift, those S-shaped metallic hooks that window-cleaners use are ideal to arrange your palette in the lift). Also beneficial: with good latex paint, brushes, buckets, and all other utensils stay very good, and you can easily clean them afterwards to reuse. 3. Now, the only drawback is: the really proper outside heavy latex brands, often have ranges that are not 100% pure color, they're more likely to feature pastel-colors/broken-colors. One the one hand it's positive: you know you're dealing with a quality brand if they refuse to go all the way up the spectrum. Honestly: once you get into working with pole and large brushes/rollers on the big formats, that's even more addictive than cans. Question: I haven't seen all of the videos on this channel - so pardon my ignorance - but has there been one on crowd-management yet? Working in a public space can be incredibly adventurous and fun, but - sadly - you also get to deal with the 'difficult' ones.

@@madajuarez7073 Well, that’s less in my ballpark. With wood you have a number of variables: texture, whether it’s been sanded down, whether it already has a lacquer or not, etc. If it doesn’t have any finish, expect some extra soaking of the paint. And also expect (for longevity) to invest in a clearcoat on top. Many of the (older) wood-paints are solvent or oil-based (wear gloves!), but there’s some cool brands now that are water based - similar to the most recent adaptations of cans also going into water-based territory. With wood you might also have to consider the extra factor of the brushstrokes themselves (they will show, especially on very smooth surfaces). Biggest tip for that (and this even for painting or drawing in general) is that the motion of drawing/painting is coördinated, but you’ll be tempted to get into this back and forth motion. If you want a even finish or tight visual application, try to avoid that habit. We tend to want to do the ‘coloured pencil’ thing of just going back and forth over an area. But the tricky thing is: your coördination on the way back will ruin the freshness of your first mark. - personally, I find this one of the hardest habits to lose, as we are so used to this back and forth motion to block stuff in. Now, granted, this only applies for the smooth finish or actual drawing and painting where the marks are important (lookup someone like Conor Harrington or oil-painter Jenny Saville for example - in turn inspired by the great Lucian Freud, and Sargent also had this habit: it’s making the mark/statement and then leaving it, instead of going back and forth, back and forth over the same area. If you’re just painting your fence green, don’t worry about all of this. Basics: 1. keep the brush wet or in the paint (anything with solvents dries quickly) 2. Don't overload brushes: not just because it gets you sloppy results, but also because the leftover paint gets stuck in the ferrule, and it'll ruin your brush. 3. When necessary, invest in a few good brushes that - especially when used in maintenance-painting - don't tend to lose their hair. It's the worst thing when you get those hog-hair brushes they sell everywhere cheaply, and after 2 minutes of working there's already four or five hairs that got stuck in your most recent smooth layer of paint. 4. Lastly: clean your brushes afterwards. Have fun with the fence!

All these videos have been super helpful, so thank you. One tip I could add that has helped me, is you can spray test cards with whatever spray paint colors you plan on using, and most box stores/paint stores can color match your Latex you are purchasing to that spray paint for no extra charge. Just came across your videos. Your tips and insights are so helpful, thanks so much for the tips! I'd love some advice for a couple murals I'm doing on some playground walls at a school that kids throw against and use to play. I saw your video on staining the basketball court and was wondering if you know whether a stain or a latex wall paint would be better for those playground walls that might get a lot of wear and tear? I think the wall substrate is wood, so I'm not sure if there are pigmented wood stains? Any help would be appreciated, thanks man!

Great vid! If people only knew what’s possible… I did some stuff down on St. John in the islands, and I often had to make do with paint that I’d never choose otherwise. But… they turned out sick! And one was a gel-coated wall inside of a huge yacht, which based on the style they wanted, there was NO room mistakes, and it was to be sealed with awlgrip sealer which I was only like 90% sure would be safe on the acrylics I used. But that’s how it was… customer’s interest/excitement was slipping fast, and supplies were limited, so it was just go time lol.

Your work is amazing, and your videos have been sooo helpful, thank you for sharing your knowledge! I just got my first commercial mural job, and the wall is concrete, so I am curious if exterior house paint will work for that since I've read that house paint can crack and peel on concrete? (I am not experienced with spay paint, and have used house paint for the murals I've done so far) Do you use a special masonry paint for concrete walls, or does normal exterior paint hold up on top of the Zinsser Prime Coat primer you recommended for concrete in your primer video? Thanks so much :)

Interesting! I looked it up because I‘m about to start my second mural. Good to hear that my random choice to use wall paint was actually one of the best decisions. However, I still don‘t get how some artists take such long strokes with their brushes without the paint running out. When I worked on my first mural each time I dipped my brush into the paint I was able to get a 5cm long stroke max before having to dip it in again and I’m not really sure how to get longer ones 🤔 But at least now I know that it‘s not necessarily because of my choice of paint.

I was a sign painter for years. Good trick I would use is instead of dragging my brush on the side of the can to remove drips, load up the brush and tap it back and forth inside the can after you lift it out of the paint. You'll be left with a fully loaded, drip free brush for long strokes.

I have the hardest time keeping track of what the different caps are. Once i use them the color indicator on the hole is painted over so I’m mostly guessing if they have few other indications. Any tips would be appreciated.
@iamdetour
@iamdetour 2 жыл бұрын
I would say to pick a few that you love. they are different but you wont use every cap out there. i literally only use 4 different caps in all of my work. all the others i don't event think about. so, experiment and find the ones that are perfect for the work and technique that you use.

Do you seal the exterior work after? And with what? Is this good for all climates? Live in Canada near Toronto

polycrylic or a floor sealer is something that i have used in the past. for exterior murals, i've used anti-graffiti sealers.

Are the premium spray paints (Kobra, Montana Gold brands) compatible for use with each other, or would you not recommend it? Thanks for the vid! I'm excited for my first mural project. Any other quick tips for an artist starting off in the business? :)

Brands like Montana and cobra have great selection of colors. They also have formulas that will make the colors not fade as fast. You can’t go wrong using those brands.

My question is can you use Montana Spray Paint over the Behr Exterior Paint. I want to use the behr to cover the back ground and then use the montana for detail, but I didn't know if you can use it onto of the other. Have you tried that?

Yes, absolutely. I do that all the time.

i would suggest using a primer that adheres to metal and then you can use a latex house paint or spray paint

I want to buy shades of green to paint along a low garden wall to mimic grasses and foliage. I’m in UK and we get lots of rain. What brand is best?
@iamdetour
@iamdetour 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the paints in the UK. Im sure there is vastly different brands for the UK because it is a different climate.

Would you suggest Valspar Duramax or is that considered cheap as well?
@iamdetour
@iamdetour 2 жыл бұрын
Valspar is good enough. it really depends on the type of job and how long you expect the mural to last.

I am going to be doing a small memorial mural on an outdoor basketball court. I was thinking graffiti style and using spray paint. I have also watched your video addressing protective coatings. Do you think these spray paints that you mention here and doing multiple coats of the vandiguard protective coat would work well?
