Does potassium monopersulfate destroy current combine chlorine? Or only prevent the formation of new chloramines? I have searched the web and have found mixed results. Also, I use the Taylor titrations to test my fc and combined chlorine levels and was planning on weekly using non chlorine shock to shock my pool. However, from what I've read, people say that potassium monopersulfate affects the titration test for combined chorine. Is this true? If so, how would I test my combined chlorine if using non chlorine shock? I prefer to use non chlorine shock since after using chlorine shock it took two days for my chlorine to go back to safe levels, and that is too many days wasted not swimming on a weekly basis. Thanks in advance.

Going back 37 years, the only SHOCK I used was (SodiumDichlorIisocyunurate)Sodium DiChlor, and the only Hot Water Treatment for Spa Pools, other than Bromine in Australia. It was back then 65% chlorin, had a good pH of 6.5, and was effective to 28° Celsius. I find it it still an effective Sanitiser today, yes it's Stabilised, but given certain environment conditions, it is truly a Wonderful treatment.

If I have a problematic pool that always gets algae: Obviously this is assuming you’re a pool guy/gal whose adding a gallon, or moreOf chlorine to the pool on your weekly service visit. 1) usually it’s time to clean the filter 2) put a pool Rx plus in the pump after cleaning the filter (this is why having a sand filter with vitro clean is truly the way to go) 3) raise Borates to 50 PPM (balance PH and alkalinity immediately after adding) If this still hasn’t worked 4) check phosphates and add some phosphate remover This has been pretty effective so far.. If the pool is still getting really bad algae it should become salt pool and if the pool Is covered it should have an ORP system. Remember to also check Total Dissolved solids obviously if it’s above 2,700 - 3,000PPM you have to drain the pool a minimum of halfway down. Remember if you’re using a Lamotte tracer to check TDS and Salt level you need to subtract the salt level from the TDS reading to have an accurate TDS reading. If you’re still reading this right now and you want a job I have a full route ready for you on the peninsula Bay Area california. Reply to this. And we can talk more.

@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity 2 жыл бұрын
@@mwachner Check your run times on your salt water generator. That's where the high pH comes from. And it should be set around 8 hours. Also check your CYA levels, which should be on the higher side for a salt water pool (80 ppm+). If your CYA levels are high enough, the chlorine sticks around longer. And that means the system has to run less and the pH doesn't kick up as much.

@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity 2 жыл бұрын
You'll want to reach 10 ppm to remove algae, bacteria and chloramines. That would be "shocking." The rest of the time you're just keeping the chlorine balanced. If your combined chlorine levels are low and your free chlorine levels are 1-3 PPM, you probably don't need to shock weekly.

I have a Intex above ground pool that is circular, 15ft from one side to the other and 48in deep. I bought mine online from Amazon because I knew nothing about buying pools and how different times of year effect availability and price and I had no idea that our local Walmart and other stores that sell these kind of pools start selling them around February when it's still cold I ended up going to try and find a pool when it was too late and the local Walmart and other stores had already been done sold their pools cause they sell them so early in the year around Feb and here it was like April or May when I was trying to find one with absolutely no luck at all so I ended up having to try and find one on Amazon and I found one from a reliable source but because it was so late into the year and pool demand was at its highest and pool availability was at its lowest I ended up paying way way way more for my pool than it normally costs. I ended up paying $1,000 for my intex 15ft by 48in pool because it was the absolute last one the Amazon seller had in stocks and almost all other Amazon sellers were sold out as well or charging the same or more price for what they had but because I wanted one extremely bad and had the money at the time and knew Walmart nor any other stores around would have anymore until the next year when they started selling pool stuff again I gave in and paid way more for the pool. I thought that I text pools had their own chemicals that you could buy at places that sold intex pools like Walmart but once I bought mine I found out that's not true or atleast not always the case atleast depending what type of intex pool, what chemicals are needed and what stores sell em in the area. I found out that Walmart here sold the pools and the filters for the pumps when they had them and were not sold out but that they don't sell chemicals really although you might find a small bag of shock or chlorine but deff not everything you need or in enough supply to last you all summer and that most of them tell you to go to your local pool store for the chemicals you need wich I ended up doing and here we only have 1 local pool store that only really deals with inground pools and the big above ground pools you buy from pool stores and have them come and install that are not the same as intex pools although they may look similar. But at the pool store my first time the lady that was there was nice and told me that although what they have is really for ingroubd pools or big above ground pools and not really for intex pools that she would try to get me stuff she thought would be best and help me best she could and so I ended up buying a chlorine tab floater wich floats in the pool and hold a chlorine tab and ended up buying a bucket of chlorine tabs or pucks and a bucket of shock, o e was $100 and the other was about $200 and at the time they only had like 3 buckets of shock left and she told me that I would absolutely need one and that those 3 buckets were all they had left and that they would probly not be getting anymore till the next year because of how pool stuff works with demand and availabilityand she told me that this three buckets would almost for sure be gone by the end of the day so I went ahead and got one and she was right cause when I went back in the next day the raining buckets of shock were gone so I was glad i bought mine before they sold out. Once I filled my pool and shocked the water and added a chlorine tab I would take samples of my wTer back to the pool place and they would test it for me and help me if I needed something to help make my pool water right but one time I went in and it was the store owner I think that I ended up getting and he seemed like he wanted to try and tell me how I should buy a big above ground pool from a pool store instead more than anything and tell me how the big above ground pools that pool stores sell are better and how I'd be spending about the same amount of money or less in the long run and so on and so on. But anyway the shock they gave me was hypo chlorine shock or whatever but what I do is take a bucket and scoop out some of my pool water then add a scoop of shock into the bucket and stir and let sit till its almost completely dissolved and don't have a bunch of granules at the bottom and then walk around the pool as I pour it in. the only issue I've had with my pool is that I think the pump that came with it isn't big enough because last yearthere were times the pool didn't get swam in by people every day to stir the wTer up alot and at one time it started to turn green but that was also during the hottest part of the summer and the pool place informed me that because my pool sits in the sun that I should shock twice a week because alot of the chlorine was probly being evaporated out due to the sun and how hot it gets here. But we ended up adding 2nd smaller pump from a smaller kids intex pool someone gave us to help when the water wasn't getting g stirred up as much at times people didn't swim in it at much and after that we had no problems so far this is my 2nd summer and I took mine down during the winter and when putting it up this year I notices a small tear in the liner and I'll say flex seal spray has fixed any small holes great so far but the area has to be dry when you spray it and has to stay dry till the flex seal spray dries then you can add water.

I put water (from the pool) in the bottom, then add Borax to it shake, (fill the rest of the way up) then pour out into the pool as I walk around... Just keep adding, shaking, and pour until you get all the ounces that you need in your pool... (Like to take the last little bit of Borax and slowly pour into the skimmer to go directly to the sand...) I do the same mixing, and pouring for the Baking Soda.... If there is no algae problem then what about using non-chlorine shock in saltwater pool? It will not raise your calcium or CYA levels. Is that a good option or is it better to super chlorinate?
@JumbledPage
@JumbledPage Жыл бұрын
It’s a great option if you heavily use your pool and if it’s within your budget. It will keep the chlorine fresh working to maximum efficiency as long as PH is within range. Make sure you’re consistently putting acid into your pool the salt in the water raises the PH. Try not to super chlorinating too often, as you’re wasting your salt cell out faster. Try to maintain the amount of chlorine at 3ppm adjusting. and then shock with dichlor (not cal hypo) whenever you want to increase the chlorine it’ll allow the cell to last longer

Our pool shows 10 PPM, but we have a green pool. So, the pool store wants us to shock by putting in more Suncoast Gold liquid Chlorine. That doesn't make sense to me. We have high chlorine and yet they want us to put more chlorine?!?!?!

I just bought our first pool. It’s 18’ and 48” deep. I have to get my alkalinity and ph right first but idk what type of shock to use. Do you just suggest bleach since it’s a smaller pool ?

How is your pool water looking? And how many gallons does it hold? Sounds like it might be the same-ish size as the green pool in the beginning of the video? If you have an algae problem, you should use a chlorine-based shock like cal-hypo.

I have the same size pool. Upgraded to the 12" Intex sand filter. I use (2) of the three inch 99% trichlor pucks always and 60-80oz of liquid pool chlorine weekly. Pump runs 10hrs a day changing the water roughly twice daily. Pool stays clear. My pH stays fairly consistent. To lower you can use muriatic acid and to raise you can use baking soda.

I notice you add the shock to a bucket of water. Does this work best, because I have never tried this, I always put the powder into the pool.

Always use the bucket system. Dilute the powder as much as possible. You don't want those crystals hanging out all day on your pool floor.

Is non chlorine shock like liquid chlorine?
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity Жыл бұрын
No, it has no chlorine in it. It'll help refresh your free/active chlorine without adding extra chlorine to the water. Liquid chlorine will raise your free chlorine levels.

I'd suggest buying a bigger pump than the one that came in the box. And buy a floating skimmer that attached to one of the side of the pool.

If you maintain proper chlorine levels you never have to shock. Liquid chlorine all year long baby…2-4Ppm at all times and you’ll never have to “shock”

So I’ve had some algae buildup where the pool has gone a teal colour, I shocked to get the water clear. The next day it worked and the pool went clear so I backwashed filter, the waste was bright green. I then balanced my pool, chlorine is 3/4ppm, PH and Alkalinity are in normal range, I come in the next day and there’s algae residue all over the bottom, when I brush it it’s green so I guess it’s not dead and is new algae. This has happened a few times now. I seem to be going round in a circle trying to keep algae away. Should I try algaecide, or is the filter still not clear and keeps contaminating the newly cleared pool?

Same issue here. 2 weeks straight of brushing and vacuuming daily. I have an old sand filter. Still would wake up with shades of algae every morning. I used Leslies clear aid for this issue, try that or some type of clarifier and some extra vacuuming. Should hopefully help

After you backwash you need to put it on rinse for 5 minutes... Also plain box of Borax will kill algae... Depending on the size of pool you may need 2 boxes... After vacuuming, back washing, rinsing, then put on to filter pour Borax in skimmer to go straight to the sand.... You will be amazed how well this works...

New salt pool owner. What I don't understand is like this. My pool was too high in salt.Remove water add fresh. Check. Test water again, Salt fine.Chlorine low. Add Chlorine. So from this point onward I have to keep adding Chlorine to my pool? It's just a vicious cycle.Why even bother to convert? What am I missing here?

As a salt pool owner, I also fell into this vicious cycle. The salt cell output is very low. I then discovered this trick. Get your phosphates to zero. This will allow you to run a low Chlorine level, algae free.

Yes, use a non-chlorine shock. You still have some chlorine in your water with a mineral system. And that means it still needs a boost from shock to revitalize the chlorine.
@TheAxe4Ever

Stay away from any liquid chlorine. It may act quickly but the Sun renders it ineffective rather quickly plus all it does is raise your total dissolved solids. And over time makes it nearly impossible to clarify your water. The only thing you can do is drain your pool at least halfway and refill it to dilute the TDS. To shock your pool after a rain or heavy use is just use your regular granular chlorine at 1 pound for every 10,000 gallons. Always mix it in a bucket of warm water and disperse in your pool. Again, stay way from liquid chlorine. Keep your PH levels in range and your total alkalinity and you’re good to go. Remember, if your pool smells like chlorine and your eyes are burning, it’s not from too much chlorine. It usually means your free and total chlorine reading are out of balance and it needs to be shocked. Also it means your PH levels and alkalinity are off.
