The default DearVR settings give you a stereo signal by default - you are essentially comparing stereo VS stereo. The New DearVR Pro2 now provides stereo audio positioning. Ideally you'd want to pan/position the audio source, distance and Height assigned to envelopes. A good layering distance is between 3.5 and 5 and you can widen the stereo field. DearVR comes with it's own Reverb system but ultimately I imagine a plugin that we can send all our audio sources to and see them in the 3D panner to position them independently.

I am not using DearVR Pro in this, I'm using DearVR Ambi Micro which is a binauralization plugin. All the panning is being done with the IEM toolkit.

My experience was 4>3>1>2 in terms of perceived spatial detail on both tests (with very minute differences between each iteration) so I think audible differences were definitely present. But I don't think the time/cost to effectiveness ratio is feasible in a production that will ultimately be viewed as a youtube video or a in similar way. If the final representation will be heard both in binaural format and also with a multi speaker array, then the more spatial reverbs could indeed be viable obviously. Incredible video, keep up the great work!

Have you ever tried reamping in a 5.1 (or some other surround) configuration using binaural microphones and then mixing (parallel) that back into your stereo mix? Worth the trouble??? Record it in a echo chamber that way?

I dunno if you have discovered IRCAM SPAT but its a free spatialisation library for Max with 2d convolution. coming back to this later but figured i'd point it out

I think that either binauaural OR reverb. Oh. @1:20 Not anyone listens to normalized (well, almost balanced) audio ins with HD650 600 ohms and/or Koss. 5.1 @2:59 sounded quite wrong. Stereo seemed - not was - out of phase. @3:17 - i experimented ad got the widest scene with -3.3 Db Dolby EAX and around 230 (wtf was that?) 3dMIDI. Stereo had almost the same sound positioning - even added 30-35 degrees down on the right channel. Edit - well, upon your experiment - that's what I noticed. 20.1 then where horizon orientation was heard.

What kind of signal did you feed into the reverb? Was it always the binaural output, or did you set up something in the HOA domain? I have found that sending to a decoder for something like 7.1.4, followed by the reverb and then buy an encoder bag to HOA can yield really great results, especially if the reverb in question adapts to the panning of the input signal.

In this case I just fed the mono/stereo signal into the reverb bus un-spatialized. Stratus and Symphony 3D don't adapt based on the direction of the input signal, but obviously for a reverb that does it would be important.

@@AlteraSound OK I see. Interesting, I thought the Exponential reverbs react to source position in a similar way to Cinematic rooms, which is the surround reverb I'm most familiar with.

@@AlteraSound yeh sort of a pointless test if you aren't spatialising the source. There are also free Ambisonic reverbs out there where you can fold down.. maybe another test?

Hardly any difference. Definitely not worth the extra cash. Great channel btw

"Binaural mixing"? No. Just no. Don't be the next person responsible for terrible Atmos mixes because someone who's paid to push narratives for software companies said to. With more cars coming out with 7.1.4 systems and more to come, binaural is just an appetizer for where Atmos is headed over the next few years
