this is amazing !! PLEASE DO MORE like these type of old video game magazine reviews ,etc.
@DefunctGames7 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for the kind words. I've actually done a few of these over the last couple years, including one that looked at all of the games on the NES Classic Edition. In fact, you should check out all 14 episodes of Nintendo Power's Best and Worst Reviewed Games, where we went year by year looking at the Nintendo magazine's review scores. I plan on doing something very similar for Electronic Gaming Monthly in the near future.

The knowing tone in your voice when you say "they recommended it to fans of the show" is hillarious.

The segment title cards are mixed up for Rescue Rangers 1 and 2!

Ack! I didn't catch that when I went through the video looking for errors. Hopefully people will be able to figure out what I meant.

I definitely did, but I wanted to point it out, in case you hadn't noticed!

Gary Harrod (Ha-Rodd) was one of the other reviewers for Nintendo Magazine System, they often made fun of colleagues in their reviews.

Oh, I should have double checked the staff page. I was under the assumption that it must have been a UK politician or business person in the early 1990s.

I agree with the old-school reviewers calling those game too easy. I also beat Chip 'n Dale and Duck Tales on my first day. Darkwing Duck offered a decent challenge though and is also my favorite of the bunch.
@electricmastro7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 was actually one of the last 12 NES games officially released on the NES. The three NES games Nintendo published that year, 1994, were Mega Man 6, Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II, and Wario's Woods. I just wonder how many people were buying a NES while the SNES was current.
@DefunctGames7 жыл бұрын
My guess: Not many. I remember loving the original Rescue Rangers game, but not even knowing it came out in 1994. Seems like everybody I talked to who has played it ended up going through it with help of an emulator. Fun fact: Wario's Woods was the final Nintendo Entertainment System game Nintendo Power reviewed (they gave it a 3.1 out of 5). They didn't even bother reviewing Rescue Rangers 2 and Zoda's Revenge. The only reviewed eight NES games in 1994.

Ducktales didn't widely stand out as the best of the best back when it was new - it was just one of the game in the huge piles of games i'd play all the time
@jamergamer00763 жыл бұрын
Wow!! They were way rougher on these classics than I thought they'd be. I like all of these game, and that's not nostalgia talking. While, yes I was a kid when these came out , I was never able to play these greats from back in the day. I love this classics collection.

I agree. While I think some are better than others, I feel like all of these games are fun and most of them still hold up. Like you, I played these as a kid. I was the target demo for Disney Afternoon, so I was delighted when these Capcom games turned out to be great. I have to imagine that being familiar with the shows and caring about the characters helped. The adults working at EGM at the time were likely not watching these Disney Afternoon shows and may have even looked down at these titles as kids' games. Perhaps that's just me trying to justify the slightly lower scores. If you go back and look at what EGM said about the first Pokemon, you'll see a similar generational divide.

If I were to rank the games worst to best: 6. TaleSpin - Awkward controls and a lot of cheap hits. 5. Rescue Rangers 2 - Decent, but isn't as sharp and snappy as the original. 4. DuckTales 2 - This is only as low as it is because the other three are so good. A worthy sequel to the original. 3. Darkwing Duck - I SO wanted this to be better because Darkwing was my favorite Disney Afternoon show, but it's basically a ROM Hack of Mega Man 5. Which isn't bad, but not very original. 2. Rescue Rangers - I played the SHIT out of this as a kid and love it still! However... 1. DuckTales - There's a reason this game is the only one that not only got a rerelease, but a REMASTERED rerelease with full voice acting by the original cast and two new levels!

I endorse this ranking. And it's not that far off from what the critics said at the time. With the exception of Darkwing Duck and Rescue Rangers, it's nearly the same. I loved Rescue Rangers when it came out and probably would have ranked it above Darkwing Duck, but mostly because I didn't play DD until much later in life.

Is Ducktales 2 the same on Nes and Gameboy? I played number one on NES and number 2 on Gameboy. Loved number one the most, but also really really liked number two. (In other aspects of life, I get more satisfaction out of number two). The others I haven't played, but look forward to this collection on PS4

I'm actually a little surprised this wasn't announced for the Switch, especially given that these are all classic NES games. Perhaps Capcom will get it out later this year.

I wonder if they really were that easy for the average Joe back then. but today's gaming populace would quickly lose interest without the rewind, that's for sure
