I could hear Mickey's crawl noise in that World of Illusion clip, haha! The Lion King is one of my favourites that I've played since I was a kid. I think it's probably my favourite one from this list. Thanks for a really great all-inclusive list here. I've got a few things to look up that I hadn't heard of.

The series Marsupilami itself is based on the comics by André Franquin, who debuted in Belgian comic series Spirou & Fantasio but spun off to its own series. There are differences between the comic and the TV show, while the comic is set in a South American jungle called The Green Inferno (as it is a perioulous place) and the comics centers of the title character and his family (consisting of a wife/mate, two sons, one is yellow with spots like his parents and sister, while the other is black, and a daughter) and their adventures, often encountering humans who become their companions/friends and Marsupilami can only speak in marsupilamian which main constists of "hubba" (prounched hoo-bah). The cartoon series puts the main character into different adventures, both in the jungle and other places and his accompanied by his friend, Maurice the Gorilla, and he is able to speak english but does have "hubba" as his catchphrase.

Being from Europe, Spirou & Fantasio was one of my favorite things when I was a child. Their adventures are like Tintin but always much faster paced. And yes, Marsupilami was a well liked-character. I liked the spin-off comic books, but not as much as the main series.

Apparently Disney acquired the international rights and made a TV series in the 90s. I do not know if the video game is based on the original or the Disney series, though. I wouldn’t count it on this list myself.

Marsupalami is actually a 1950s French comic character that Disney licensed in the 90s to try and market internationally. The character is still big in France with a movie having come out in the past few years.

Fun bit of trivia here, the Gargoyles OST (which absolutely slaps) was composed by Michael Giacchino, the guy who would go on to compose the soundtracks to movies like Up, the Incredibles, and Star Trek 2009.

Omg, I've been waiting for this one for like 2 years! At least when I saw it was on your backlog while I was supporting your patreon. And it paid off, because what a great collection of Disney games the Genesis actually had. I played so much of Castle of Illusion and Quack Shot when I was a kid, the latter's soundtrack is one of my favorites since ever. I never had a clue there were Pocahontas, Gargoyles and Marsupilami games (even finding out this is considered a Disney one was a surprise), and I'll definitely check them out!

It's out this summer, it's called Illusion Island, it was in a Nintendo direct, but it might come out for the other consoles too, I dunno. The visuals in a ton of the retro Disney games are seriously just incredible. Games like Aladdin and The Lion King are engraved into my mind. I never beat either when I was a kid, but they are still a couple of the most most memorable 16-bit games I have from my childhood. For some reason, Page Master is also in that list of memorable games, even though I hated it, lol. I think it's because of how much I loved the movie.

Quackshot is by far one of the most nostalgic games for me. The music is a big factor too..like the song in the haunted castle.. man, talk about a nostalgia trip! I was fortunate enough to have a snes and Genesis, so thankfully I got the best of both worlds. But yeah, Quackshot reallllly brings me back .. I played the shit out of that game. It evokes so many memories and brings me back to a much happier and simpler time in my life. Castle of illusion is right there with Quackshot too. I never played the sequel, world of illusion. Wish I had though. I always hear people giving credit to castle of illusion though, not world of illusion. I guess it flew under a lot of our radars at the time for some reason. Oh yeah, Aladdin and Lion King were both fu€king amazing when I was a kid. Lion king was still frustratingly hard, but such is the case with a lot of these older titles. We always somehow beat them though. There wasn’t much handholding in some of the older games, and I think many were better off for it.

I remember getting Quackshot on Christmas day 1991 and I thought my copy was broken as I couldn't pass the first level. A couple weeks later one of my friends cousin showed me that you need to call the plane to get to the next levels.

Wow. I forgot all about the Castle of Illusion and other Mickey games on the Genesis. I beat the remake of COI on PS3 a few years ago with my young daugter and although the game did seem weirdly familiar to me throughout our playthrough, it wasn't until watching this video that I finally remembered that I used to play it back when I was a kid on my Sega. From the looks of it they kept the game pretty much the same other than the obvious boost in graphics and everything. Really good games. Both the original and the newer remakes. I'm pumped for the new one coming out. Thanks for the video.

Quackshot really is exceptional. There are few games in my life I've felt the desire to play through multiple times, but that game is the complete package. I've seen people complain about the backtracking, but that's an intentional part of the design, and the stages are designed to work that way.

I've mentioned this before, but I only knew the genesis to be the Disney system for the first almost 10 years of knowing it. I learned about sonic in like high school. I was surprised to learn that Donald Duck games used to be among the best games of each system, at least on cartridge based systems. Great list! Same. Somehow I either owned or rented damn near every game in this list. Makes me sad sometimes, that I can't go back to childhood and have that same fascination over these games like I used to. I still play them, mind you, but yeah when you're a kid, video games are kinda magic, you have no idea how any of it is possible, and it's just so fun. There was no Internet to find walk-throughs for games, you had to work it out yourself (yes the Internet did exist already back then, but less than 1% of people had it, it was only in 97-98 that it took off) Have you seen, they're making a new Illusion game that's out this July!? It's gonna be called Illusion Island, it's great and I'm really excited about it. A new Illusion game, after 3 decades, that's not a remake of a previous game or anything like that but instead a brand new game, I'll almost certainly buy it (unless reviews say it's terrible, but I doubt that'll happen)

World of Illusion and Quackshot are two of my favorite games ever. I also had Goofy’s game and still feel the pain. lol - Mickey Mania is a blast, as is the one where you get to vacuum up the enemies. Toy Story and Lion King were ball busters, Tailspin and Bonkers were okay, I’ve never played any of the Beauty & The Beast Games, Gargoyles, Pinocchio, Pocahontas or Maui Mallard, and Aladdin’s is an all-time classic. Disney on Genesis was a good time to be a kid. ❤️

World of Illusion was probably my favorite just because of how not only do you have co-op and single player, but the game physically changes in mechanics when you play it in co-op and you even experience different levels or different views of levels. It was just so amazing and my co-op partner and I had a blast, playing through many times. My top 5 of the list would be: 1. World of Illusion; 2. Aladdin; 3. The Lion King; 4. Quackshot; and 5. Great Circus Mystery. Also Mickey Mania would be up there. Disney games back in the day were fire.

Marsupilami is a long-running Belgian comic strip, popular in Europe but never really caught on in the US. I had no idea that they licensed the character to Disney for an American TV show, let alone made him into a licensed game for the Genesis.

Dude this compilation was amazing, somehow you sound younger each time! Mickey Mania on Genesis has an stage in which you have to climb a cylindrical tower, it's really impressive how the graphics rotate to give the illusion of a 3D space and such stage is not present in the SNES as far as I recall. I have to admit I played Mickey's Ultimate Challenge as a grown up and I enjoyed it, it was a fun and short playthrough.

Quackshot blew my mind as a kid. I was sleeping over my friend's house one night and he rented Quackshot from the store, I had never heard of it before, and I was absolutely amazed by it. I've never forgotten about that game ever since, that's the kind of impression it made on me.

I grew up playing World of Illusion, Quackshot, Toy Story, and that infamous Lion King game (have PTSD just thinking about that wildebeest stage!), and I *very* strongly agree with your picks and opinions on this one, SNES Drunk! World of Illusion is one of the better examples of how to do coop multiplayer, and it was great that different stages existed for different playthroughs (Donald's butt was too big to have him crawl where Mickey could without assistance to get pulled through, and both players were needed to help each other climb up and operate various mechanisms to get to different areas and stages). It was an easy game but I had to get my sisters to cooperate with me for multiplayer (which greatly increased the difficulty), and that was both challenging and memorable and overall a positive experience for me. Quackshot was just a great time as a kid. Exploring the world as Donald Duck, upgrading that plunger gun, fighting bosses (easy-ish but fun enough), solving puzzles (will never forget that silly death trap puzzle in the ruins). Lion King was too hard at the time for me to comment on other than that insane wildebeest stage where you need almost pixel perfect positioning to dodge some of the combinations that ran through. Gonna have to revisit that and Battletoads with some liquid courage and friendly encouragement. And yeah, Toy Story is definitely an odd curiosity that everyone should try once. Almost all of these games had that Disney quality animation and artwork that signaled immediately that they were worth the experience of trying once (even if some weren't as good as others).

And they're making a new Illusion game now!!! It's coming out for the switch this summer (2023), don't know about the other consoles. But yeah it's gonna be called Illusion Island and you can play as mickey or Donald or Minnie or a 4th character I can't remember right now (goofy I think?) and all 4 characters play very differently and have different abilities and can go through different routes through the levels, like how it worked in sonic 3 & knuckles where all 3 characters could go to places in the level that the others could not, and knuckles especially had basically almost entirely new levels for some of the zones, like launch base zone is very very different). I think you'll be able to switch characters on the fly in Illusion Island, but also it's up to 4 players co-op too which sounds fun. Having grown up with the Illusion games for the mega drive, I'm incredibly excited for a new game in the series. It looks fantastic, it reminds me of the newer raymans (raymen) that are 2D platformers and are brilliant games. But yeah Sega had some of the best Disney games back in the day. Even the master system ones are brilliant, like they are essentially Ducktales games except you play as mickey. It has the same exact bouncing mechanic, the levels are very very similar in layout and appearance (compare the 1st level of Castle of Illusion for master system to the Amazon level of Ducktales, they're practically identical, it's so close that I'm surprised Nintendo or capcom didn't try to sue them; also little details are the same, like the treasure chests look almost identical to the treasure chests in Ducktales). For anyone who loves the Ducktales games and wishes there were more of them, well there ARE more of them, and they're all on the master system. They are a blatant rip off by Sega, and I don't care one bit about that. It's the closest thing to new Ducktales games that we've ever gotten. So if you like Ducktales, go play the mickey mouse games for the master system today, because you'll love them. They feel exactly the same as each other. They're unofficial Ducktales games in my eyes. Like how on the NES, Darkwing Duck is a Mega Man game cos it uses the exact same engine and plays and feels exactly the same. And how Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventure for the SNES is essentially a Parodius version of Rocket Knight Adventures (hence the similar name), made by the same dev team, plays very very similarly, but stars Twinbee.

Something that wasn't brought up is that each solo playthrough has a different route, and when played in co-op, a long with a different route the challenge is changed with new traversal moves that can only be executed with a partner (thinks like lowering a rope for the other player, standing in eachothers heads and oulling donald through spaces he would normally get stuck

I played World of Illusion back in the 90s a countless times also 2 player with friends, and still recently found out when playing Donald in single player he goes through some diffirent levels then With Mickey! Definitely my all time favourite game EVER!

When I was a kid playing these games with really nice hand drawn 2D sprites and backgrounds, I used to dream of the day when games would get so advanced it would seem like you're playing a big budget fully-animated Disney movie in real time. then Mario 64 came out and the 2D dream died. Oh well

Not quite dead... There have been a few great looking traditionally animated games over the years (the point & click adventures of Lucas Arts for example) but these days indies have been picking up the baton of old school 2D animation with stuff like Cuphead or Gris. Absolutely stunning games. Some games like Armello or Hades also have amazing 2D-animated cutscenes or trailers but then the game itself is more 3D-based, or only partly 2D.

SEGA thought 2D wasn't done yet either with their Saturn heavily focusing it's hardware on 2D Sprites. Then the dream really died. A 2D revolution would of been nice as it never got reach it's full potential back then fs. And it's not as amazing when modern more powerful hardware tries it either as they're all basically just PCs now.

As a european, seeing Marsupilami here is surprising, I didn't know that Disney got the rights for that license. It's a pretty well known bande dessinée (comics book) character here. Think Spirou, Tintin or Asterix, that kind of stuff.

I was a Super Nintendo kid who loved Disney and missed out on all of these in my childhood except for the SNES version of Mickey Mania. However, as an adult I've been able to play through Castle of Illusion several times and love it. This video convinced me that I need to find a way to play through World of Illusion now.

So I never even thought of giving Pocahontas a try but I enjoy your reviews and thought if he likes it the game has to at least be decent. Well I was so wrong. The game is excellent! Really fun, challenging but not really frustrating. I think my only complaint would be that the game was a bit short and I'm not sure how much replay value it will have but I'm so glad I finally gave it some time. Great video and I hope we continue to see more Segadrunk!

I was a Sega kid growing up and its still my favorite game system. But the only one of these i never knew about til recently was Pinocchio. Definitely need to play it! Graphics look awesome.

Oh man got hit with some serious nostalgia bombs in this video. I had more than a few of these games growing up, mostly the movie tie-ins, but my family had the Sega Channel (essentially modern-day Game Pass where the available titles rotated either weekly or biweekly, I forget which) and I have vivid memories of games like Bonkers and Marsupilami. Decent enough games for a single session or two but nowhere near worth full price for, perfect for rental stores or in this case Sega Channel.

As a kid who was a little old for this era of disney i overlooked these games when they came out. it wasn’t until i got a bit older and started revisiting the 16bit era that i realized i missed out on some of the best platformers of all time

The Master System (/Game Gear) also had its fair share of solid Disney titles. Its version of Castle of Illusion plays a bit differently from the Genesis one, but I personally prefer the 8-bit one in this case. Land of Illusion is a "more of the same but better" sequel, and for Donald fans "The Lucky Dime Caper" and "Deep Duck Trouble" are both definitely worth checking out.

Yeah Sega at the time did some really amazing work with the Disney license and i agree about Castle of Illusion, there's something about the Master System version that makes it more fun than the Mega Drive one.

That Pinocchio game has some of the best graphics when it comes to color usage I've seen on Genesis. Genesis always struggled against SNES due to its color palette, but boy, that Pinocchio game did it right.

Magical Quest is great game for introducing your kid to retrogaming. I play the SNES version with my daughter and she loves it.

10:25 There's a new Marsupilami game that's basically a DKC: Tropical Freeze clone. I recommend it for a straightforward, relatively easy sidescrolling platformer.

Someone probably mentioned but Marsupilami is a European comic from the 50’s, which is why it launched in PAL regions first. I’m sure the Disney adaption was part of what made the game happen, but it’s a much older IP.

Quackshot was the first Genesis game I got, after playing Sonic that came with it for months. One of the first games I beat as a kid. I can still remember the first time I did with my brother watching. One of my favorite games ever. I just cant get over how Donald moves his butt when walking, just like an actual duck. So much fun!
