I disagree with your assertion that battery chemistry isn't important. It is very important, as well as cell amps and max discharge rate. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are much heavier and have low amps and low discharge rates compared to other lithium chemistries. They are not generally used for ebikes and are less desirable, because of these limiting factors. Due to their weight, they are best suited for stationary solar power stations. I suggest everyone learns about cell chemistry. The information is readily available on the internet, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each battery chemistry.

Good info. Knowing your BMS is also important. The BMS should be able to output at least the sustained amps the motor can draw & handle the speed of the charger. Many (of the few) fires are started when someone buys a new fast charger and the battery or BMS can't handle the charge rate.

Ebike batteries should all have a BMS to protect against faults, over current, high temp etc. If the BMS is working properly it should be safe-ish. Where things go bad is poor quality craftsmanship welding the cells and nickel strips etc. Or not using a BMS whatsoever. At the of the day a battery is just a bunch of cells connected in different configurations to achieve the desired voltage and amp hours capacity. Same cells go into power tool batteries.

Battery if possible should be quickly detachable, so it doesn't consume the vehicle if it starts burning or worse burn down your house. Batteries should have their own fire protected enclosure for charging, preferably outside of your house to avoid smoke damage. Insurance companies should sponsor this for home owners some how, maybe via lowered payments.

UPP sells affordable battery packs, but buy at your own risk. That is who I got my 72v battery pack from....5 months later, the pack decided to stop charging fully, and UPP does not stand behind their batteries with any kind of good warranty. Lucky for me, the issue seems to be a loose wire in the BMS and not bad cells, but if you get a faulty product, they will not replace it in any reasonable way.

Lucky, if you short it out and it no longer charges! You open her up and pull the wire out the bms, then plug 🔌 the charger in and turn on ,then put bms plug back in ,this resets the bms ,I accidentally shorted mine with a BIG SPARK BANG 😅,It wouldn't charge /turn on ,I did this and got a beautiful red charging light on the charger, I was well happy

Thanks for your overview. It would be good to cover Chinese cell manufacturers such as BAK to start building up a database of other quality high grade manufacturers. From what I am seeing and reading, it is going to get harder for ebike battery builders to source batteries. I was reading "LG/Samsung/Panasonic only supply their cells directly to true manufacturers".

So far buyed and used three "noname" batterypacks, (2x 15,6ah, 1x20 ah) and yet nothing happened for three years. Only the very first pack is kinda damaged lately and has only 70% capacity left. Still rode around 20.000km with those "evil" products. Sure sometimes a pack might explode, but sometimes a car crashed, a aeroplane crashed or a waterpipe leaks... The other option: **LEARN** something and build your own battery packs. You get to control every single aspect, specification, and quality measure - not to mention that you've improved yourself and grown as a person by learning something and doing something new. It's one thing to be 'scared' of 'cheap and dangerous chinesium' in a magic box you know nothing about. Or... do it yourself to your own (presumably) elevated standards. You know why you see so many 'sketchy' chinese battery packs on the market? Because they are incredibly cheap and easy to build - and therefore a huge money maker with astronomical profit margins. It's easier than you think to build a battery pack that is FAR safer, has a much higher capacity, and is way cheaper than anything you can buy.

I think the any battery pack can become dangerous when people run too high watt motors on a battery that can’t handle the output, or try to charge them with a “fast charger”. Fry battery components while riding, start a fire on the next recharge. Don’t be an idiot and your battery probably won’t grenade on you.

You can buy like 5 of the other brands batteries before even coming close to the price of the “reputable” brands here… batteries don’t cost that much to make correctly, the cells used are widely available and the prices are well known, it’s about $200 worth of cells give or take in an Ebike battery for the absolute best 18650s on the market. This is a classic case of luxury tax, where the “top end” products are no different than the mid-grade but you pay exorbitant amounts for someone’s name or reputation.

@@Mash3OH3 I made my own, but I also bought a cheapo blue hard case one off eBay for not much more than it costs to make, (less if you factor in the tools and extra materials I had to buy) I’m perfectly happy with both. If you do build yourself don't skimp on anything if you can help it. Get a decent battery case and BMS. Don't solder spot weld. Means getting your hands on a car battery, although the spot-welder was only about £16 for some basic Chinese Thing. Did the job though. Take time to practice on Nickel strips. If you can lift all the cells up from the metal strip and they don't fall off. Happy days your rocking ;)

Daft as it sounds one of the biggest head f*cks is trying to get your head around the battery nickel strip configuration, especially when the battery case doesn't hold it in a conventional 4x13 block for example (which would be well easy to configure ;). Make sure your workspace is clear of any solder bits etc. Short circuits at 48v are a lot different than a 12v short ;) A lot more blue and zappy ;)

I prefer to stick to companies from home! But these chinese batteries are good and much cheaper. Now a comment to the exploding batteries seen through out the internet. Yes batteries can explode due to poor use (usually) or they were built poorly. Some people dont even read the manual on how to maintain the performance of a battery because they think they know it all, Then go online and blame the company. No it was you! Lol so keep in mind people that not all “reviews” are legit reviews!

lithium iron phosphate is safer if something bad happens to the battery, ie. overcharging/overdischarging or physical damage. rather than violently exploding into flames like lithium ion would do, the lithium iron phosphate kinda just gets a little hot and lets off some smoke. lithium ion batteries are ok to use as long as the user understands the limits and keeps it safe. the best benefit of lithium ion is that they're almost twice as energy dense as lithium iron phosphate batteries, resulting in smaller and lighter batteries.
